Time to consideryour optionsGCSE results may

be a long way off,but for 16-year-olds now is thetime to begin

contemplating the future anddeciding where you want to goafter Year 11.

For many, sixth form is anattractive option, and is amajor stepping stone betweencompulsory study and thewider world of work or highereducation.

You can study A Levels orAS Levels during your sixth-form years, in a wide varietyof subjects from English togeography, while somecolleges will give you theoption to choose work-relatedvocational qualifications in-stead, from veterinarynursing and childcare topainting and decorating andbeauty treatments, which isparticularly useful for thosewith a certain career in mind.

Many colleges also offercourses in essential life skillswhich aim to help you intohigher education or into a jobwhen you leave sixth form.

You can study towards allthese various qualifications ata sixth form college, a school

sixth form, a further educat-ion or a specialist collegesuch as an art college, or adance and drama school.

And, while many peoplechoose to continue theireducation at the school wherethey took their GCSEs, it isalways a good idea to keepyour options open and con-sider what other schools andcolleges can offer. After all,you might find that a nearbycollege offers a wealth ofsubjects you didn’t realisewere open to you.

Whatever stage you are at,make sure you think long andhard about what type ofcourse you want to do, whatsubjects you might need totake for your future study orcareer path, and whether yourchosen school or college canmeet these requirements.

As colleges vary in size con-siderably and tend to offerquite different facilities andcourse options, it is alwayswise to visit the place beforeyou decide to attend. Manyinstitutions hold open days toallow prospective students thechance to look around, meetthe staff and get a feel for theplace.

Things to consider includethe journey time from thecollege to your home, and howeasy it will be to travel there.

Other things to think aboutinclude the school environ-ment, whether you like theteaching staff, are the classsizes too large, are the coursessuitable for you, and thegeneral amenities, such ascomputers and sports.

Funding is also anotherarea to think about whenconsidering attending sixthform. Can you afford it? If youare aged 16 to 19 and stayingon at school full-time to studyA Levels or NVQs, you may beable to apply for financialassistance, for example theEducation MaintenanceAllowance (EMA), and fin-ancial assistance fortransport costs, school mealsand books/equipment/fieldtrips, etc. Contact your localcouncil for details, as well asthe sixth form of your choice.

Just take your time, weighup the all options and don’t beafraid to ask questions toparents, teachers and currentpupils – that way, you reallywill get the most out of youreducation. CRUCIAL: Sixth form is an important step in anyone’s education
