Welcome to the Institute for Caregivers (I Care) It is through gathering information, gaining knowledge, learning to accept the reality of the situation and being open to change, that we have the best opportunity to provide good care for the family member or patient and find positive, personal growth as a caregiver. To support this caregiving journey the Onondaga County Office for Aging has offered, since 2006, the Institute for Caregivers (I Care). This is a series of spring and fall classes presented by local professional and practitioner experts. From those attending, we have learned the value of being pro-active, becoming knowledgeable about community resources, making plans in advance, putting documents in place, improving communication skills, having the family conversation early, exploring coping strategies and learning the importance of taking care of the caregiver.

The Office for Aging also offers Caregiver Discussion Groups at the following locations:

Life Transitions and LossHave you ever felt like you should know how to think, feel and behave when faced with an experience that you have never done before? As we go through life we will be faced with many transitions. Some are planned for years such as retirement, kids going off to college, a career, a new project, even aging, while others sneak up and surprise us like illness, divorce, job loss and care-giving. The one consistency in life is that there will always be change and no matter how prepared we may think we are we can be caught off guard with the many emotions, thoughts and responses that show up. In this engaging and interactive class on life transitions and loss you will have the opportunity to explore your own personal experiences while learning a variety of techniques that will not just let you survive these changes but thrive.

• Find, choose and communicate with the person(s) who will help you as you age• Make your wishes known in the event you develop dementia• Decide who will manage your estate after death and how to plan for your final wishes• Determine whether to leave funds to charity, beloved pets, or distant relatives• Maintain privacy for your estate after your death

Peace of Mind Estate Planning: Part 2Discussions regarding estate planning often focus on married couples with children; however, estate planning for a single person is equally important, as is planning for child-free couples (married, partnered, or unmarried). The consequences of not having a well-coordinated plan can create real problems. This session will focus on how to avoid conflict when making end-of-life choices and preparing your estate plan. Estate planning is a powerful statement of love to your family and friends and/or as a legacy of your lifetime achievements. Your survivors will know what you want. By having a Will, Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy, Living Will, and potentially a Trust, you can provide them with the tools to be an advocate for you at end of life and attempt to protect them from lengthy court procedures and challenges from creditors. In this session, we will discuss how to:

• Understand which documents you need• Focus on what matters to you• Remove uncertainty and stress• Minimize conflict among beneficiaries• Update beneficiary designations effectively• Provide survivors with a roadmap of your wishes

Class ListingsThe Positive Approach to CareThis interactive class explores the challenges of caring for someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s and utilizes a different approach to care for your loved one so you get a better outcome. This class will showcase Teepa Snow’s philosophy and care partnering techniques that will help you do Activities of Daily Living with your loved one and not do to them. The use of Teepa’s Hand-Under-Hand technique can be easily learned and used to help connect with as well as comfort a person with dementia. You will learn how to:

• Respond to a person’s change in cognition and abilities in a way that is not hurtful or offensive.• Understand that common “reactions” to a person with dementia can become “thoughtful” responses that improve everyone’s quality of life.• Recognize that the person with dementia is “doing the best he/she can.” If it is not working, it is the responsibility of the Care Partner to change the approach.• Notice the environment and make changes as necessary.
