EDUCATION SUCCESS STORY Cutting-Edge High School Leverages ShoreTel Mobility on iPads to Improve Communications CHALLENGE: Teachers did not have desk phones in the classrooms and received paper messages from the front office. Installing phones was cost prohibitive, teachers needed to be more reachable, and the school wanted to create a green technology-savvy culture. SOLUTION: McCarthy High School deployed ShoreTel Mobility on iPads, along with ShoreTel Communicator and Softphones on their desktop PC or laptop. For Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School, that echelon of excellence is based on vision, demonstrated by accomplishment, and supported by progressive, meaningful technology. McCarthy High is a Roman Catholic college preparatory school of the Archdiocese of Miami, Florida. Founded in 1997, the school is located in nearby Southwest Ranches, and has over 1,500 students enrolled. Regularly named one of the nation’s Top 50 Catholic High Schools, and recently ranked 6th among top private schools , McCarthy offers 15 AP courses and a dual enrollment program with Saint Thomas University, and reports that 99 percent of last year’s graduates are attending college. Among its long list of accolades is the student one-to-one iPad program, which enhances the classroom experience with state-of-the-art learning. Each student is equipped with an iPad to access their textbooks, take notes, complete assignments, and submit homework. McCarthy is one of the first schools in South Florida to implement this program. “Our job as a school is to prepare the kids for college, and it’s exciting to see all the changes that are happening in technology that help us to do that. We are moving outside the concept that teachers are the owners of knowledge that they must be up in front of the classroom lecturing. Now the kids can own some of this knowledge with iPads. The class can watch videos for example on their iPads, and then discuss as a group what they’ve learned,” says Richard P. Jean, McCarthy’s principal. Making the Call to Excel The modern learning culture at McCarthy High School includes standard-issue classroom desktop computers, too. What has been missing from the classroom, however, is the simple ability for teachers to receive and place telephone calls. “Classrooms are not equipped with desk phones. Parents are among our stakeholders and they want our teachers to be accessible without always having to wait for the teacher to receive a voice mail or paper message and return the call.
