Strengths and Weaknesses of my Learning Strategies In Studying.

A research by : Abang Fairul Syarmil B Abang Mohammad

Section 1: Summary of the General Presentation

    1.0 Introduction

Peoples thinking and behavior are worked differently from each other. Therefore the

strategies of learning from each person also difference. It may be difference on how their

accept the idea or content of the knowledge or how they react and response. Learning

strategies are the behaviors and thoughts that learner engages in during learning that are

intended to influence the learners encoding process. [1]

In this assignment, I will explain what are the strength and the weakness of my learning

strategies. Firstly, I will explain about my learning strategies .The first one is:

1)Take the main point in the class, but do not understand it thoroughly. Will review itlater in my room.

2)Understand the general view only. Not detail because the detail I will assume I cangenerated a sentences by using my own words.

3)Will be more focus in the field that I think that will benefit me in the future andparallel with my course.

4)Do the urgent assignment/work first. Not the important. (Last minute work)

That is the main strategies I used in my learning and studying. I believe that there are pro and

cons about my habits in studying, but as I said, every person have their own methodology.

Now, we will move to the next section where I will be analyzing what are the strength and

    weakness in my studies.

2.0 Strength and Weakness of Learning Strategies

    1.

Take the main point in the class, but do not understand it thoroughly. Will review it

    later in my room.

    Strength Weakness

yBy taking the main point in the class,we can know what are the important

content that had been highlighted by

the lecturer. Most of the main

important in the lecture usually will

come out in the Exam and Final

    Exam.

yTaking the main point only will helpme more focus about the general ideawhat are being lectured in the class. If

I try to understand all the detail while

I the class, I will get confuse because

within an hour lecture, I didnt expect

all the detail will be explain

thoroughly within such a short time.

yThis method sometimes did not workas expected. Because sometimes, the

detail that had been elaborate within

the main point are not in the text book

    or others lectures notes.

yIf students expected that all the detailsare in the note, sometimes they will

miss the real content of the point.

yThese techniques also depend on thestudents itself. Sometimes, they

assume they will review it later in theroom, but what happens are they will

know the main point, not the details.

    2.

Understand the general view only. Not detail because the detail I will assume I

can generated a sentences by using my own words.

    Strength Weakness

yThis is will be always my learningand studying strategies. With thistechniques, I will not memorize the

content to answer it in the exam, but Itwill help me to understand the

    content. Memorize and understand is

    to different things. By understanding

the content, we doesnt have tomemorize the exact word as long as

the content of the word is

    understandable.

yMemory is naturally associative, notlinear. Any idea probably hasthousands of links in your mind. Mind

maps allow associations and links tobe recorded and reinforced.[2]

yThe weakness of these techniques issometimes when we write thesentences of our own; the

understanding of the reader is not thesame as we thinking.

yOur sentences may be interpreted ofanother situation. This will happen ifour skills or writing are not at a good

    level.(English level is poor ).

    3.

Will be more focus in the field that I think that will benefit me in the future and

    parallel with my course.

    Strength Weakness

yWill be more understand about whatare the major course we were

studying. We will be narrow down

about what are our main priorities by

    studying this subject.

ySometimes, others knowledge is moreimportant than what are we assume

important in our field. It will be our

    added value in the future.

    4.

Do the urgent assignment/work first. Not the important. (Last minute work)

    Strength Weakness

yI will assume they are not muchstrength if we do our last minute work

on our studies and assignment. Maybe

we can say that by doing a last minute

assignment, we will have much more

    content and idea.

yLast minute work will reduce thequality of our studies and content of

    our assignment.

Section 2: Comparison and Findings of Other Research.

    3.0 Interpretation

    3.1 Note Taking Technique

Based on the research had been done, below is the journal that I refer to be compare with my

learning strategies. The first point is:

Take the main point in the class, but do not understand it thoroughly. Will review itlater in my room.

    Refer on George Mason University:

The most comprehensive note taking systems require attention on your part. You must be alert

enough in class to take legible, meaningful notes. You can't rely on "writing everything down"

because a lot of information in a given lecture won't help you actually learn the material. If

you have problems determining the specific relevant points in a particular class, you can

always ask the professor to clarify them for you.[5]

Based on the above statement, it is clearly noted that this techniques will give us more benefit

to understand in studying. Another researcher from Taiwan also had a research about the note-

    taking tehcnique.

Dr. Tsai-Fu Tsai, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Foreign Languages, Chiek-kuo

Technology University, Taiwan had done a research about the important of taking main point

while in the lecture it is crystal clear on how it will affect the performance of students

    understanding.

Note-taking skill remains well-recognized as effectively increasing ability to recall,

comprehend, and retain subject matter (Ayer & Milson, 1993; Kobayashi, 2005). Its benefits

for college students were confirmed by multiple studies (Bonner & Holliday, 2006; Davis &

Hult, 1997; Einstein, 1985), yet little empirical research has rated effects of note-taking in

classes where English is the instructional language while the audience consists of non-native

English speakers (Teng, 1996). In Taiwan such classes are commonly found in colleges,

where difficulty of comprehending and retaining English-only lecture looms as conspicuous

    obstacles. [6]

Figure 1.0 Cornell Note-taking Method. One of the popular note-taking technique.

Studies prove taking notes as important for learners to record and analyze information

acquired through reading with diverse strategies: graphic organizers (Katayama & Robinson,

2000), concept mapping (LeBauer, 2000). Note-taking lets learners either memorizes

messages simultaneously in the comprehension process or store them externally after audio

    input ends.

    3.2 Power of Mind Map

The second point of my learning strategies is about:

Understand the general view only. Not detail because the detail I will assume I cangenerated a sentences by using my own words.

For this technique, I usually used the mind-mapping technique. I had reviewed some of the

journal that is from Peter Russell, one of the inventors of Mind Map technique. [2]

The traditional way of taking notes, whether for a lecture or when reading a book, is to follow

the chronological sequence of the author's thought, and to summarize the content of the book

or lecture, often using sentences and phrases instead of just keywords. Mind mapping is

generally linked with the popular psychologist Tony Buzan, although in fact similar

approaches have been used by Porphyry of Tyros in the 3rd century to conceptualize the ideas

of Aristotle, by Leonardo da Vinci and by Picasso, to name but a few. Tony Buzan however

did much to popularize and schematize mind maps in the 1960s and 1970s, provide an

authoritative account on how to use the technique.[3]

Figure 1.0 Example of Mind Map Technique

    7/10

The mind remembers key words and images, not sentences -- try recalling just one sentence

from memory! Mind maps use just key words and key images, allowing a lot more

information to be put on a page. Because mind maps are more visual and depict associations

between key words, they are much easier to recall than linear notes.

    3.3 Urgent vs Important

Do the urgent assignment/work first. Not the important. (Last minute work)

Figure 3.0 Urgent vs. Important Table of Decision by Stephen Convey

Stephen Covey on his books, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People discussed about the time

management skills. In his book, his question about time management skills: is a task urgent

    or important?

Stephen Covey has written about time use and devised a four-quadrant chart to help us judge

where we spend most of our time:

QUADRANT I: Urgent and Important: Crises, problems, deadline-driven projects.

QUADRANT II: Not Urgent, but Important: Preparation, problem prevention, planning,

relationship building, values clarification, true recreation (re-creation).

QUADRANT III: Urgent, but Not Important: Interruptions, some phone calls, some

    meetings, some email.

QUANDRANT IV: Not Urgent, Not Important: Junk mail, spam, busywork, trivia,

escape activities, mindless web surfing, etc.

Section 3: Personal Opinion andSuggestion / Conclusion

Based on the research that had been carried by me and a few references from journal and

research paper, there are pro and cons in my learning strategies in studying. To make it more

clearly, I had drafted a timetable what are the suggestion to improve my learning strategies.

    Strategies Suggestion To Improve

Take the main point in the class, but do not

understand it thoroughly. Will review it later

    in my room.

Learn how to take-note an important notes in

the lecture. If possible, try to note a few key-

word in a detail so that when review it later, it

will not be misunderstanding the content.

Understand the general view only. Not detailbecause the detail I will assume I can

generated a sentences by using my own

    words.

Understand the content is more useful thanmemorize the content. Train myself to

understand the general view of the content.

    Developed skills in mind-mapping,

Will be more focus in the field that I think

that will benefit me in the future and parallel

    with my course.

    Urgent vs. Important

Used the time wisely will make the last-

minute work syndrome decreased from time

to time. I have to make sure that my time

management is much more effective to make

sure all my works are more quality. Finish the

work as soon as possible will improve my

    learning strategies.
