SynopsisWelcome to Camp Rock - the ultimate camp for aspiring musicians (“We Rock”). Mitchie Torres arrives and greets her friends from
last summer (“Brand New Day”). Everyone is welcomed by Camp Rock’s founder, Brown
Cesario. Mitchie starts off Opening Jam with (“This Is Me”) and is joined by Connect 3 front man Shane Gray when he arrives with his brothers Nate and
Jason. In spotlight-absorbing fashion, Tess Tyler takes the stage (“Start the Party”). The campers soon receive an invitation
to visit the brand-new Camp Star, run by Brown’s rival and former band mate, Axel Turner. Luke and the Star Campers perform a high-energy number (“Fire”), which overwhelms the Camp Rockers. Axel offers them a spot at Camp Star, and Tess immediately makes arrangements. Brown quickly shuttles the Camp Rockers back home to avoid further defections. Before they leave, Nate becomes smitten with Axel’s daughter Dana, but is too shy to say anything.
Brown informs the campers that most of his staff took Axel’s offer and Camp Rock will have to close immediately. Mitchie, devastated, calls her pals to action (“Can’t Back Down”). Brown agrees to let Shane, Nate and Jason take over teaching the classes (“Play My Music”). Bolstered by their progress, the Camp Rockers challenge the Star Campers to a Final Jam showdown (“It’s On”). Tess and Axel up the ante and offer to broadcast “Camp Wars” so viewers can vote for the winner. Brown is furious when he hears about the contest, but the Camp Rockers convince him they can do it. Mitchie starts working on their number and drives everyone to focus. Shane, Nate and Jason try to lighten the mood (“Heart and Soul”), but Mitchie makes everyone get right back to work. Spying from a distance, Tess misses how much fun she used to have at Camp Rock. As Mitchie and Shane fight about not spending time together, Nate sneaks across the lake to sing to Dana all the things he was too shy to say (“Introducing Me”).
The Camp Rockers want to improve their chances by making the Final Jam number a duet between Shane and Mitchie, but they first have to get them back together (“Wouldn’t Change a Thing”). Camp Wars arrives and the Star Campers perform a flashy hi-tech number (“Tear It Down”). Intimidated, the Camp Rockers give it their best (“What We Came Here For”). Everyone’s thrilled until they realize that Axel solicited votes outside the broadcast and Camp Star is announced as the winner. On the way back to Camp Rock, Brown expresses how proud he is of everyone, even if the camp has to close down (“This Is Our Song”). Suddenly, the phones start ringing from parents who saw the performance and want to send their kids to Camp Rock next summer! Joined now by several Camp Star defectors, including Tess and Dana, the Camp Rockers are thrilled to know they will be back for an even better summer next year (“We Rock”)!

Disney’s Camp Rock has proven a hugely popular musical with youth and adults alike. A simple story of young people standing up for what they believe in and working together to make it happen. The greatest challenge when directing Camp Rock was organising the cast’s stage movements in new and exciting ways as to encapsulate the chaotic energy of the show,
while also finding a way to make the movement visually pleasing. It is a show busy with emotion and commotion and the way the cast shift through those emotions must be portrayed in their stage movement.
The most important element for the cast was to understand the concept of loyalty; what it means to fight for what you believe in and what it means to do the right thing. The rivalry between Camp Rock and Camp Star makes for great drama on stage and great lessons off stage.
Ultimately, Camp Rock is a story about coming together in times of need and paired with the vibrant energy of our young cast the show makes for an entertaining watch, and a great inspection of human instinct. Chanel Turner, Director for National Youth Theatre Company Trust.

Disney’s Camp Rock was an exciting introduction to my f irst choreography role for the National Y outh Theatre Company.
This show has numerous high energy dances, some that see our cast of 155 all sharing the stage together, from our youngest at 6 to our oldest at 21.
Being a Musical Theatre Company, our cast are used to performing in similar dance style, one thing Camp Rock brought both for me and for them was overcoming the challenge of Hip Hip. Hip Hop is a technique that really isn’t for everyone and I am so proud of all of the cast for disciplining themselves and tackling this challenge head on.Choreography for this show has been a huge learning experience for me. It’s been a pleasure working with such a talented group of young people and I know their passion and conf idence will shine through in the performance you come to see.

VISUALART
Create a mixed up
rock instrument by folding your paper in
half, drawing the top half of an instrument in the
upper section and the bottom half of another instrument
in the lower section. Unfold the paper to see what you’ve created.
Roll big paper out on the floor, draw around your silhouette. Choose
a character and draw yourself as a character
from ‘Camp Rock’.
Choose your favourite set
from ‘Camp Rock’ and re-create it to scale inside a small
box. Use fabric to create soft furnishings and make models of the characters
in that scene to go inside it.
Listen to the song ‘This is Me’. Using a
projector/OHT trace your silhouette onto a piece of paper. Following the shape
of your face, cut out pictures or use photos or stickers to create
a ‘This Is Me’ collage.

Lie on your back in a free space on th
e ground with your palms
facing the roof and your legs outstret
ched and eyes closed.
Concentrate on your breathing and how
every breathe adjusts your
body on the ground. As your heart rate
begins to slow down to
rest slowly start to move your limbs.
Start by rolling from side
to side using only your fingers to help
you, and then slowly roll
to a seated position still with your e
yes closed.
Once at a seated position keep going b
ack to your breathing
and how it adjusts your posture in dif
ferent positions. As you
slowly stand up start to experiment wi
th gravity: how it feels
to have o control of your head, how it
feels to walk with loose
limbs and how it feels to walk complet
ely stiff. While you do
this think about your character and ho
w they would walk, how
they would feel in one particular scen
e and how this exploration
of gravity can adjust your character’s
posture in that scene.
CharacterisationExercise
Camp Rock’s ‘Mitchie’ is a complex girl. She is young and has insecurities, but simultaneously she is confident in her abilities and will go above and beyond for people she cares about and what she believes in. For her character, one should explore the difference between her in a stressed, tense physicality and a happy, relaxed physicality. Her character has many emotional journeys in the show and her physicality is only a mere contribution to portraying those changes to an audience.
Example:
SCENE 9: CAMP ROCK - Day 11
(The Camp Rockers enter in an exhausted, pathetic line, phones in hand.)
PEGGYCamp Rock - Day Eleven. Too... tired... to... text
ELLAYou know that weird thing you get in your thumbs from texting too much? I have it all over my body.

ANDYFun? What’s that?
SANDERWe’re supposed to be swimming now!
BARRONI’m dripping wet - but I haven’t seen the lake in days...
(Mitchie enters with clipboard, all revved up, as usual.)
MITCHIEOkay everybody! Let’s run the number one more time! And this time, don’t just go through the motions, do it like your life depends on it!
(Camp Rockers grumble and complain.)
ELLAReally?
PEGGY You’ve gotta be kidding.
SANDERIf I do it one more time, I don’t know if I’ll live to see fifteen -
MITCHIEAm I the only one who cares about what happens?
ROSIEI care.
SHANEMitchie, everybody cares.
CAITLYNWe just need a break that’s all
MITCHIEFine. But if there’s no Camp Rock next year, don’t blame me.

Chords
N.C. at the start means “No Chords” - you don’t start playing the guitar until bar 6. The technical term for singing unaccompanied is “a cappella”.
Start out just trying to play the changes - so just strum your guitar one time for each chord. Slow it down if you need to.
You’ll see that the second chord looks a little more complicated - don’t worry too much about this. A suspended chord (in this case Dsus4 or D suspended 4th) is just a chord that has had an extra note added. If you look at the melody in bar 7, it’s a repeated G note. This isn’t a note in the chord of D major (D, F#, A) , so they’ve added it in on the top - if you play it on the guitar you’ll hear that the top note of the chord is the note which is being sung. If this is all a bit too complicated, you can actually get away without changing the chord at all here - try it and see!
In bar 17, the chord changes to a Bb. This is a harder chord to play on the guitar. The usual way of doing this is a “bar chord”. To play a bar chord, you need to cover the entire fretboard with the index finger of your left hand and press down hard. This is represented by the curved line in the chord symbol. If you can’t press down hard enough to make the notes come out clearly, it’s OK - as long as your finger is there it should sound fine.
Once you’ve got the hang of the song playing just one strum for each chord, try some more complicated strums. Something that works well for this song is strumming in quavers (so 8 strums per bar) and anticipating the chord changes. Anticipating means changing in advance - so you’d change chord on the last strum of each bar instead of the first of the next.
Further Study
Once you’ve mastered the verse, why not try to figure out the chorus? To give you a start, the chords used are Bm, G, A and D, repeated. They do change it up by sneaking an E chord in near the end - can you figure out where? The lyrics of the chorus are “Raise your hands up in the air and scream. We’re finding our voice, following our dreams. ‘Cause we rock (we rock) we rock, we rock on. Nobody in the world’s gonna bring us down. The louder we go well the better we sound. ‘Cause we rock (we rock) we rock, we rock on.”
