Landing the HIM Jobs of the FutureINNOVATION STOPS FOR no industry—especially health information management (HIM). And for those HIM professionals who want to have happy, produc-tive careers for years to come, it helps to envision what the future of the profession might look like and where innovation will take HIM careers.

As readers of the Journal of AHIMA are well aware, change is already transforming the HIM industry. Now that the majority of documentation is electronic, jobs working with that documentation—managing patient portals, conducting clinical documentation improve-ment, and analyzing patient data—are predicted to be core HIM functions in the near future.

AHIMA has been encouraging all upcoming and current HIM professionals to evaluate their skill sets and get additional education and professional devel-opment in new areas of expertise that will help lead them to the HIM jobs of the future—training that is highlighted in this Resource Guide.

Below are four HIM jobs of the future, curated by con-

sulting AHIMA subject matter experts about trends they are seeing in the fi eld, compared against HIM-related jobs currently available on job search sites such as In-deed.com. AHIMA’s Career Map was also an invaluable resource in helping to fi ll in job descriptions, responsi-bilities, and the experience required for each position—and is a good fi rst stop for those looking for career goal inspirations: https://my.ahima.org/careermap.

Director of Enterprise Risk ManagementThis job is categorized as an “emerging role” on AHIMA’s Career Map, which also places it in the “ad-vanced” category since it requires a master’s de-gree or higher in HIM as well as at least fi ve years of professional experience. Alternate job titles include “director of utilization management,” or “director of performance improvement.” An individual in this position is responsible for coordinating risk man-agement reporting of incidents as required by the corporate o ce and external entities; participating

with leaders from governing bodies; and manage-ment of medical and allied sta to improve the qual-ity of patient care. Required skills include knowledge of healthcare performance improvement and risk management programs; knowledge base of patient rights; ability to coordinate and integrate all perfor-mance improvement activities in a healthcare set-ting; ability to maintain confi dentiality of patient in-formation; and presentation and data analytics skills, among others. Average compensation for this posi-tion is $96,777, according to Payscale.

Patient Portal Coordinator/EHR AnalystAs electronic health records (EHRs) start to reach the market saturation rate, jobs dedicated to managing their maintenance are expected to increase. Currently, there are job titles such as “EHR coordinator,” “EHR revenue cycle analyst,” and “EHR applications analyst.” These jobs have similar job duties and responsibilities and require similar levels of education. Care settings

are usually hospitals and physician o ces. Typical tasks include: coordinating patient support e orts; process-ing patient messages that come through the portal; interacting with team members to follow up on open tickets and follow up with patients upon resolution; and tracking patient feedback regarding the patient portal to identify trends and opportunities for improvement. A bachelor’s degree is preferred, as well as healthcare experience—plus a minimum of three years of project management experience. Jobs managing patient por-tals can o er salaries with an average of $60,000 per year, whereas jobs that involve analyzing EHR data for the revenue cycle pay as much as $125,000 per year.

Coding Educator or AuditorAs traditional coding—including ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and LOINC—becomes more automated, many in the HIM fi eld predict that the role of coding professional will

Labouré’s Program v. Boot Camp Webinars:

Labouré’s program is different from webinar programs and

boot camps because it is a college credit-bearing program.

Labouré College’s CDI program stands alone in

its structured, group approach to learning a new

healthcare discipline in an online format.

All courses are online and taught by nurses and doctors credentialed in CDI. The program includes weekly assignments, recorded lectures, hands-on practice activities, and discussion groups. Most importantly, the program provides students with an experienced instructor who is available to answer their questions. Students also have the opportunity to learn from fellow classmates with diverse professional backgrounds.

Each of the four courses covers one or more of the six CDI core competency groups. The eight credits of academic coursework represent 120 hours of instruction and approximately 250 hours of reading or written assignments. In total, this program represents approximately 10 weeks of training. This is a significant bonus to healthcare organizations hiring Labouré CDI graduates - they can start immediately on the clinical practice component of their education and training.

Labouré College’s online Clinical Documentation Improvement Certificate is a structured, academic program designed for credentialed healthcare workers identified by ACDIS or AHIMA (RN, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, MD

and DO).

Graduates gain a solid background in CDI and daily processes and are ready to begin their clinical practice in the CDI department immediately – without preparatory training by the healthcare facility.

Quick Facts:

• Start in September, January, or May• Can be completed in two semesters• Earn eight college credits• College accredited by NECHE• Taught by CDI credentialed nurses and doctors • Graduates are fully prepared to begin clinical practice in CDI departments

transition to roles with a bigger focus on auditing and teaching. AHIMA’s coding experts predict that such a role could be performed prior to billing, retrospectively, or both—which would depend on the workfl ow of the organization. This person would also provide education and feedback on audit results to all sta involved in the coding and documentation process (coding profession-als, physicians, clinical documentation improvement, etc.). The position would proactively provide education related to coding to keep all sta up-to-date on annual coding updates and any regulatory documentation. This position could also be involved in compliance activities related to coding at an organization. Salary expecta-tions for this are hypothetical, but similar positions cur-rently range from $20 per hour to $63,000 annually.

Revenue Cycle AnalystThis job is designated as an “emerging career” on AHIMA’s Career Map, and several job search sites contain similar job titles, both of which suggest there are ample opportunities for HIM professionals.

Job candidates would have “experience in inter-pretation and analysis of provider contracts; dem-onstrated knowledge of standard CMS pricing methodologies; knowledge of basic credentialing processes and be familiar with Cactus or credential-ing vendor; [and] demonstrated knowledge of pro-vider networks.” Some revenue cycle analysts are expected to have experience with Health Level Sev-en programming interfaces, databases, and project management. Depending on the years of experience required and location, salaries range from $65,000 to $140,000 annually.
