. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .welcome to silver valley

The Silver Valley, heart of Shoshone County, is cradled between the Coeur d’Alene Mountains and the Bitterroot Range among the pristine wilderness of Northern Idaho. Surrounded

by lush green mountains, rugged canyons, rushing streams and crystal clear alpine lakes, this valley overflows with natural resources. The Silver Valley is one of the first frontiers of the Pacific Northwest and has a history as rich as its wealth from the silver, gold, lead and zinc mines.

Since the discovery of silver in the 1880s, Silver Valley has pro-duced more silver than anywhere else in recorded history. The vast majority of Shoshone County’s population lives in the valley, where Interstate 90 traverses from east to west. The county’s small agricul-tural industry primarily raises livestock. Only 1,200 acres are under cultivation and 39,000 acres used as grass for cattle range. The other 94 percent of the county’s 2,640 sq. miles is rugged forest land, dotted with tiny logging towns. Shoshone is the twenty-first largest county by population and eighth by area, in Idaho.

The Silver Valley is one of the most popular destinations for all season recreation, boasting the largest system of groomed trails for snowmobiling, mountain biking and ATVs in the country.

The 14 small communities in the Silver Valley provide a wide variety of services and shopping. Coeur d’Alene and Spokane, only a

little over an hour away, offer even greater opportunities for shopping. The valley is proud to have a fine medical center providing excellent health care. There are three school districts dedicated to providing an environment conducive to learning for Silver Valley students.

At the heart of any community are its people. Proud, capable, earnest and family-oriented are the residents who call the Silver Valley their home. They possess a strength and free-spirit synonymous with the state of Idaho. These people are thankful for the infinite array of opportunities in this four season paradise.

The climate in the Silver Valley as with the rest of Idaho is influenced by Pacific weather patterns which help moderate temperature extremes. Because, of the mountainous terrain,

this area has greater precipitation then the southwest and southeast portion of Idaho. Winds may accompany cold fronts and thunder storms, but hail damage is minimal. Idaho is not prone to tornadoes. Summers are generally dry and warm, cooling off nicely at night. Win-ter can bring heavy accumulations of snow in the mountains and this is one of the reasons the Silver Valley is a winter recreation paradise. The elevation averages 2,300 ft. in the valley with a growth season of approximately 160 days.

housing

The housing market in the Silver Valley for the past couple of years has been very dynamic and all evidence leads to continued growth in the housing market. For a shining example of the health of the housing market one only needs to look at the expansion of the Silver Mountain Resort. The second phase of the Silver Mountain Resort/Eagle Crest condominium offering was available in September 2005. In one day 100 units were sold out! This development, other developments (such as a townhouse project in Pinehurst), and existing housing provide a variety of housing opportuni-ties for the Silver Valley.

Houses under $100,000 typically will not stay on the market for more than a couple months. From April–Septem-ber 30, 2008, 67 units sold at $140,000 median price.

The average rental cost of a 3-bedroom home averages between $600 and $700 a month with few vacancies. For further information on the housing market contact a local Realtor or property management company.

retirement

The Silver Valley has become a popular location for retirees. The convenient location to Coeur d’Alene and Spokane, abundant outdoor activities, affordable housing and mild four seasons have made the area an attractive place to call home.

employment

Mining is the traditional economic foundation of Shoshone County. With the higher silver prices and other development mining continues to play an important role in the county. The Lucky Friday and the Galena are the two major mines in the area. Both mines are planning production and employment expansion. The mining industry employs about 700 people.

Tourism is a major economic force in the county. The Silver Mountain Resort expansion has added to the growth in the economy. In 2008, the resort added an indoor water park. A growing number of hikers, bicyclists and snowmobilers flock to the area to explore the hundreds of miles of trails in Shoshone County. Wallace continues to draw many travelers off Interstate 90 to shop and explore the town. Lookout Ski area has recently remodeled and expanded its facilities to draw more skiers and snowboarders. Leisure and Hospitality sectors employ about 480 people. Dave Smith Motors employs more than 300 people.

the mullan roaD

The Silver Valley has a long and colorful history, begin-ning with Mullan Road which opened up some of the most promising por-tions of the west. As the first overland route to the Pacific Northwest, it pro-vides passage over the Con-tinental Divide through an otherwise impenetrable wilderness, in what is now Northern Idaho. Its origin was of a military nature. In 1854 Congress appropriated funds to build a wagon road between Fort Walla Walla in the Washington Ter-ritory and Fort Benton in what would later become

the Montana Territory. Lt. John Mullan, a topographical engineer was appointed to head this project, which ultimately would cost in the neighbor-hood of $230,000. In 1859, a crew of 70 men began work on the crucial 624 miles of road linking the Columbia and the Missouri Rivers. The task was completed in three years on the eve the Civil War started. The road may seem primitive by today’s standards, was considered a frontier superhigh-way. Mullan Road which traverses what is now Interstate 90 was Idaho’s first engineered road and is on the National Historic Register.

mining anD logging

Thousands of civilians traveled across Mullan Road when it opened in 1862, especially prospectors in search of gold in Montana during the 1860s and Idaho in the 1880s. Gold was discovered in 1882 a few miles north of Wallace and subsequently silver, lead and zinc in the

Silver Valley which led to the development of the largest silver mines in the U.S. These discoveries evolved into such famous mines as Bunker Hill, Sunshine, Coeur, Galena, Lucky Friday, Hecla and Consolidated Silver. Some of these mines are over a mile deep and a few have over 100 miles of underground haulageways on various levels. Tradition-ally, mines in this area produced about one half of the nation’s newly mined silver. Since the middle 1980s this proportion has dropped to about one-tenth or less.

Logging has played a major role in the economic development of Northern Idaho over the past 100 years, between 1878 to 1978, more than 300 sawmills operated at one time or another in Northern Idaho. During the 1880s the growth of towns, the building of railroads and the beginning of the mining industry in this region created a great demand for lumber. As the old growth timber began to disappear in the eastern states, many of the major lumber companies looked to the Northwest for new timber sources. Northern Idaho has immense stands of white pine and met all the conditions for logging. Northwest Idaho’s natural waterways were imperative to taking the logs out of the forest so they could be transformed into lumber then transported by steamboat and railroads to the awaiting market.

Natural disasters played a part in history as well. A devastating forest fire swept through this area in 1910, destroying three million acres of timber. The town of Wallace was nearly destroyed and many smaller communities disappeared forever.

Mining disasters too brought tragedy. One such incident happened on May 2, 1972 when a fire in the Sunshine Mine claimed 91 miners. A monument near Big Creek (I-90 Exit 54) stands as a reminder of this tragic event.

Kellogg

Legend has it, in 1885 a gentleman by the name of Noah Kellogg, a gold prospector and carpenter, and his burro camped about 1,000 yards from the present day location of Wardner. The camp was up Milo Gulch and high up this mountain; it was here that Kellogg discovered a large outcropping of galena (lead ore), which lead to the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mines. Because of the discovery, Kellogg enjoys a unique and long history with roots in mining.

This mountain village touts alpine recreational activities avail-able in the area. Here you can ride the world’s longest single-state gondola, to the top of Silver Mountain Ski Resort . . . a spectacular sight seeing trip during winter and summer. Kellogg features several historical sites, such as Kellogg’s Staff House Museum, the hidden city of Wardner, the Wardner Museum and the founding site of Bun-ker Hill Mine. Facilities and community services in Kellogg include a library, senior and youth centers, several organizations, a bowling alley, miniture golf, an outdoor heated swimming pool situated in the park along with a bike trail to the park, skate board park, 3-on-3 basketball court, greenbelt, several shopping areas, food stores, a fire department, post office, an industrial area with utilities, and a regional hospital. Silver Mountain Resort recently entered into the beginning stages of construction on an indoor waterpark planned at the resort’s Gondola Village. The approximately 55,000 sq. ft. facil-ity will feature several waterslides, a surf wave, an indoor/outdoor

swimming pool and other major aquatic attractions. The waterpark is projected to open early 2007. The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes passes through Kellogg. While the Historic Silver Valley Chamber of Commerce located is in the Union Pacific Passenger Depot with the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes directly out the door.

This charming community with its affordable housing, quality health care, plenty of services and a good educational system along with scenic mountainous beauty makes it worth investigating as a home for families and retirees.

Wallace

A unique city, it is one of the few in the U.S. to be totally included on the National Historic Register. As the self-proclaimed Silver Capital of the world, it appeared destined to become the economic and political hub of the Silver Valley. Wallace’s location on Mullan road, as well as its close proximity to a plethora of emerging mines did prove to be the key factor to its early success.

The city soon, became the seat of government for Shoshone County. By 1890, it was the third largest city in Idaho. A forest fire in 1910 proved to be a blessing in disguise as the business district was rebuilt with durable brick in fine fashion. Wallace residents are intensely proud of their architectural legacy and of their colorful heritage as a bawdy mining camp. The Wallace District Mining Museum provides exhibits and displays. The Sierra Silver Mine tour offers a first hand encounters with an actual mine and The Northern Pacific Railroad Museum occupies a picturesque turn of the century train station.

The Sixth Street Theatre and Melodrama is a unique year-round theatre housed in the oldest wood frame structure, in downtown Wallace, offering summer melodramas, musicals and comedies. Wallace is also famous as the filming location of “Heavens Gate” and “Dantes Peak.” Wallace boasts a Carnegie Library, senior and youth centers, several civic organizations, fire department, tennis courts, an outdoor heated swim-ming pool, a downtown city park and the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. An array of specialty shops line these quaint downtown historic streets.

The town lies along Interstate 90 in a quaint hillside setting—truly reminiscent of an old mining town.

Mullan is nestled in the mountains at the east entrance to Silver Valley. The town had its beginnings in the late 1850s, when U.S. Engineer Lt. John Mullan led an expedition to blaze a wagon road for military purposes between Fort Walla Walla, Washington and Fort Benton, Montana. In 1960, the road was constructed through the present site of Mullan. A townsite was incorporated in 1885, but the town was not incorporated until 1912. This mining community has adopted the theme “The Town of Trails” as the area is covered with many walking, off-road vehicle and hiking trails. Attractions include the Captain John Mullan Historical Museum, the Idaho State Fish Hatchery, the Lucky Friday Mine and Shoshone Park.

Murray and Prichard are two historic settlements in the Silver Valley that lie just north of Wallace. A small population and some services can be found. The Spragpole Inn Museum and the 1884 Murray House are just two of the historical buildings. South of Murray in a historic cemetery lie buried such colorful characters as Molly B’Damm and Captain Toncray—Mark Twain’s inspiration for the famous Huck Finn character.

Osburn is in the heart of the Silver Valley just south and parallel to highway 90. This community has several amenities such as a school, library, fire department, senior center, post office, restaurants and grocery store, two parks and an industrial area.

Pinehurst is located farther west as the valley widens. Services in this mostly residential community include: a library, West Shoshone Park, grade school K–5, fire department, senior hall, post office, bank, strip mall and campgrounds.

The city of Mullan boasts an indoor Olympic swimming pool and a complete range of services such as telephone, sewer, clean water, garbage pickup, electricity and natural gas along with patron owned cable TV.

Wardner, just above Kellogg, gets its namesake from an entrepreneur by the name of James Wardner. He moved from Murray where he oper-ated a grocery store and quickly became partners in the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mines. The cabins that sprang up for the living quarters near the mines became known as the town of Wardner. Eventually James Wardner sold out his interest and moved on to Fairhaven, Washington. Later he moved to Canada and started mining and logging where the town of Wardner, B.C., was named after him.

Smelterville, Silverton, Kingston, Cataldo and Enaville are other small settlements in this picturesque valley of farms and ranches and gently rolling hills.

trail oF the coeur D’alenes

The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is one of the most spectacular and popular trails in the western United States. This newly constructed 71.5 mile long asphalt trail nearly spans the Panhandle of Idaho. It is perfect for bicycles and in-line skates. This trail runs along rivers, besides lakes and through Idaho’s historic Silver Valley. Starting in Plummer, the trail generally follows the shoreline of Coeur d’Alene Lake then passes through a chain of lakes and follows the Coeur d’Alene River up into the mountains to Mullan. The uniqueness of the trail isn’t simply the beautiful scenery and attractions along its route but its innovative partnership between the Union Pacific Railroad, the U.S. Government, the State of Idaho, and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe. catalDo mission

In 1842 the Coeur d’Alene Indians, the native inhabitants of this area, were visited by Jesuit Missionaries. Jesuit priest Father De Smet had a profound impact on the tribe and promised to build them a mis-sion. The Cataldo Mission of the Sacred Heart was completed on the banks of the Coeur d’Alene in 1853, with most of the work being done by members of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

The mission was designed by a true Renaissance man named Father Anthony Ravalli (a Jesuit Priest), who had studied art and architecture. The Greek revival struc-ture is entirely secured by wooden pegs and dowels, rather than nails which were not available. Its adobe-like walls are a foot thick. The Cataldo Mission is Idaho’s oldest standing building and now part of Old Mission State Park. The park includes an interpretive trail and a museum dedicated to the Coeur d’Alene culture. At the Visitor Center is a short historical video available to view, along with exhibits on the Coeur d’Alene Indians and the Jesuit Missionaries. On the grounds, one can visit the Church and Parish House and walk the short trails. There are two trails you can walk that will provide you even more information about the Cataldo Mission. Major events at the Old Mis-sion State Park are The Historic Skills Fair and The Annual Mountain Man Rendezvous. For more information, call 208-682-3814.

u.s. Forest service

The U.S. Forest Service has had a long tradition in the Silver Valley. In 1906, the Coeur d’Alene National Forest was established from the Forest Reserves, created by Teddy Roosevelt in the early 1900s. In 1973 the Coeur d’Alene National consolidated with portions of the Kanisku and St. Joe National Forests to create the 2.5 million acre Idaho Panhandle National Forests. The U.S. Forest Service oversees the management and conservation of the renewable resources of flora and fauna within its jurisdiction. The Idaho Panhandle National For-est offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities from hiking the trails, riding the Route of the Hiawatha bike trail, snowmobiling, riding OHVs, fishing or floating the Coeur d’Alene River, and hunting.Coeur d’Alene River Ranger Dist./Smelterville: 208-783-2100

parKs

Parks are abundant in the Silver Valley, many of them offering recre-ational opportunities. East Shoshone Park (Pottsville) is east of Mullan off Interstate 90. The park with a mountain backdrop offers, among other things, nature trails. In Osburn is the Gene Day park. This park offers picnic areas, covered kitchens, baseball diamond, basketball courts and tennis courts. The Kellogg City Park sits in the center of Kellogg and is the location of a heated outdoor swimming pool, wading pool, tennis courts, gazebo, and playground. Mullan has a charming, well-maintained park in the heart of town. West Shoshone Park is in Pinehurst, next to the KOA Campground. A stream runs through the park, picnic areas are available along with covered kitchens.

Fishing & WilDliFe

Two major rivers traverse the Silver Valley, The Coeur d’Alene and St. Joe, along with several mountain lakes and streams, which provide excellent fishing for Rainbow, Cutthroat and Brook Trout. There are eight mountain lakes in Silver Valley, all require a short hike, easy to reach and well worth the effort. Some require more effort than others. The Coeur d’Alene and the St. Joe rivers afford excellent kayaking, canoeing and rafting.

Hunting is a major activity in the Silver Valley during the fall months with some of the best elk hunting anywhere in the U.S. Most of the land in the Silver Valley Mountains is public and lies within the boundaries of national forests. The major wildlife species hunted are elk, white tail and mule deer, black bear and mountain lion. Elk populations and harvests have quadrupled in the last 20 years. Idaho’s bull-cow ratio may well be one of the best in the nation. The variety of upland game hunting is also remarkable. Seasons are long and the success rate is high.Idaho Department of Fish & Game: 208-334-3700http://fishandgame.idaho.govPanhandle Region: 208-769-1414

museums

Located in the Silver Valley are numerous museums depicting the rich and colorful history of the valley. Here are just a few.Northern Pacific Depot Railroad Museum (Wallace) 208-752-0111The Historic Wallace Depot was built in 1901 with unique bricks and concrete panels made partially from mine tailings. Throughout the depot’s 100-year history it mainly served the mining industry, but in the early years passenger traffic was also heavy. In 1976, while still operating as a railroad station the depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The chateau styled depot is an excellent representation of the architecture and history of Wallace, the county seat and the financial center of the area’s mining industry.Oasis Bordello Museum (Wallace) 208-758-0801The museum is the old Oasis Museum, which operated from 1895 to 1988. The ladies of the bordello left in a hurry abandoning everything. The 20-minute guided tour shares information on the bordello and local characters.Wallace Mining Museum (Wallace) 208-556-1592The Wallace District Mining Museum, open all year long, features exhibits depicting the history of local mining from the 1880s to modern techniques used today. Along with a video describing the history of the area, the museum exhibits include mining artifacts, examples of home life in the mining camps and information on the town of Wallace.Staff House (Shoshone County Mining & Smelting Museum)(Kellogg) 208-786-4141The Staff House was built in 1906 as the residence for the current Bunker Hill man-ager and later used as the staff house. This museum holds a wealth of exhibits from artifacts, photos, min-eral specimens, mine models, prospecting displays, mine cars, smelting equipment, payroll records, an 1899 Nordberg compressor, and other memorabilia important to the his-tory of the area. The museum also features rotating displays.Sprag Pole (Murray) 208-682-3901Murray has one street and about 100 people still living in the area. This small town has many historic buildings worth visiting. Admis-sion is free to the Sprag Pole Museum, which preserves the colorful history of this mountain town. Displays include mining equipment, old-fashioned school room, barber shop, Molly B’Damm’s bedroom, logging and forestry displays and much more.Wardner Museum and Gift Shop (Wardner) 208-786-2641This hands-on museum is housed in a building that dates back to about 1890. The owners opened the museum to preserve the history of Wardner, mining, and the families of the Silver Valley. There is no charge to visit the museum, but visitors are welcome to make donations and visit the gift shop next door.Captain John Mullan Museum (Mullan) 208-744-1717Located in the Old Liberty Theater build-ing, the museum has an area for seasonal or topical exhibits along with a collection of artificacts and memorabilia of the past 100 years. Mullan is the home of the Lucky Friday mine, which is one of the last oper-ating mines in the Silver Valley.

Winter in Silver Valley is a season of exhilarating

and profound beauty. Local snow- covered trails and mountains pro-vide exceptional recreation such as downhill and cross country skiing, dog sled races and snowmobiling. The area stretches from east of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, through the Idaho Pan-handle and then reaches into the western portion of Montana, which is all included in the Silver Country trail system. This is America’s largest mountain trail system for snowmobilers. The Silver Valley Snowmobile Association sponsors the Snowfest every February in Wallace. Sledding starts in the streets of Wallace and takes in a variety of trails totaling 300 miles of Silver Valley. A newly marked and color-coded trail system insures an excitement-packed day of multilevel snowmobiling.

Plenty of opportunities exist for cross-country skiing throughout Silver Valley, with marked trails everywhere. The Lookout Pass Nor-dic Trail is 3.5 miles in length and begins at the top of Lookout Pass chairlift. The trail crosses the St. Regis Basin and traverses portions of Old Mullan Road.

Silver Mountain’s base village is at Exit 49 and just a quarter mile off I-90. In the summer, Silver Mountain is a popular destination for mountain bikers and hosts a Summer Concert Series under the stars at its outdoor amphitheater atop the mountain. Expansion plans include a water park and golf course.

Lookout Pass has been named by Northwest Travel Magazine as one of the region’s top family ski resorts. This original Idaho ski area has operated every winter since 1935. Lookout has a reputation for being the first to open, best snow quality, affordable rates, and a nationally recognized Free Ski School that provides a top-level ski and snowboard skills development program for youth.

Recent expansion has doubled the skiable terrain on both the Idaho and Montana sides of Lookout Pass. Currently there are 23 named runs, the Lucky Friday and Last Chance glades, a 1,150-foot vertical drop, two terrain parks, all serviced by three lifts. A new addition to the historic lodge includes a new bar/lounge, expansive restaurant seating, a new retail shop and panoramic slope side views. An extensive trail system for cross-country skiers and snowmobilers starts at the parking lot.

Lookout Pass is also home to the Route of the Hiawatha mountain bike or hike trail (see page 14). The area is located adjacent to I-90 at the Idaho/Montana state line.
