WHAT IS HIV/AIDS?

HOW DO PEOPLE GET SICK

• What makes people sick? • A virus!

• VIRUS= a type of germ. • They get into our bodies and make us sick• Viruses need to be inside of our body to make us sick • Many viruses do not survive long when outside of the body

• Can you name any sickness caused by a virus?• Cold • Chickenpox• Flu

• HIV is one type of virus, but is very unique

WHAT DOES HIV MEAN?

Human

The illness is spread from one person to another

Immunodeficiency

The illness make people sick by making our bodies weak because it attacks the immune system .This makes it easier for us to catch colds and other sicknesses

Virus

A germ that makes people sick. The virus germs are tricky because it can make more germs inside your body all by itself

HOW YOU CAN CATCH HIV?

• There are three main ways someone can become infected with HIV:1. Infected BLOOD or some bodily fluids get into

your body(for example: - Blood gets into a wound you have- Getting infected by using dirty needles, tattooing, body piercing

equipment- Sharing razors, knives toothbrushes, other personal hygiene

equipment)

2. Unprotected sex3. Infected mothers can pass HIV when

breastfeeding

WHAT DOES HIV DO?

• The HIV virus germs get into the blood• Makes our bodies weak by attacking our immune

system • Makes it easier to catch a cold or other sicknesses

WHO CAN GET HIV?

• The HIV virus germs are not picky

• Boys, Girls, Babies, Kids, Moms, Dads, Grandmas, and Grandpas can all get HIV

• But… Everyone can help stop the spread of the HIV virus germs by being healthy and by keeping yourself safe

ANYONE!!!!

HOW TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE

• Always be cautious • Be careful when you come

into contact with blood (even if they are your friends)

• Never pickup or touch a used needle

• Do not share other peoples toothbrush, nail clippers, or shaving razor

• Keep your own cuts covered with a Band-Aid

• Do not share drug supplies

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND BLOOD OR A NEEDLE

• Needles are very dangerous – do NOT touch them• Never touch a used or dirty needle because HIV or Hep C

can be on or in the needle

• Tell an adult

• Can call the fire department

• Do NOT touch blood unless you have rubber gloves on.

HOW IS HIV DIFFERENT THAN OTHER VIRUSES ?

• HIV The virus must be inside a person’s body in order to survive!

• Cannot be survive in the air or in the outside environment

• Does not make you sick right away

• Becomes less infectious in dry or cold blood

PROGRESSION OF HIV

• General steps 1. The virus replicates in your body and takes over

certain body cells 2. Weakening of the immune system (T-cells) 3. Some people may exhibit signs and symptoms4. Opportunistic Infections 5. AIDS

WHAT IS AIDS

• Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

• AIDS is caused by HIV and is the final stage of HIV

• AIDS= HIV+ (+) at least one opportunistic infection

• Blood test

IS THERE A CURE?

• No. • There is medicine for people that have HIV/AIDS• If you or someone you know has HIV/AIDS they

can still live a full and happy life • Can still go to school • Have a job• Have a family • Have friends • Play sports

comfortable• Come together as a group and share our feelings and ask

STIGMA

• Stop stigma and judgements

• In 2013, 129 new people got HIV and there were about 2000 people living in Saskatchewan in 2013 who were infected with HIV

• People can be afraid to see a doctor or tell friends and family because people don’t want to be judged

• It is important to remember that we are all humans and everyone should be treated with respect even if they are sick

• We provide programs and services to individuals infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

• Our goal is to provide everyone with the information and means to live independently and with dignity.
