always wear protective equipment in both practice and match situations. although not every drill in this section anticipates contact with a player, a piece of equipment or the

ground, by its very nature rugby invites contact, sometimes by accident. it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Kicking Drill 1. Punt Kicking for Accuracy

Work within a four-sectioned grid, with each sec-tion measuring 8 metres square (figure 4.8). Stand in grid 1; your partner stands in grid 3 or 4. Punt the ball accurately to each other so neither of you has to move to catch the ball. Constantly change positions within the two grid areas after each kick to test your punting accuracy.

to increase Difficulty

• Ask a friend to pass you the ball before you kick.

• Pick up a rolling ball; then punt.

• Kick; then chase your ball to put the catcher under pressure.

• Use your weaker foot.

to Decrease Difficulty

• Shorten the distance you have to kick over.• Stand with your kicking foot back and walk

gently into the kick over three paces. As you start the third pace, drop the ball onto your foot as you swing it through and make con-tact along the long axis with all of your laces. Remember to follow through.

Kicking

exeCution 1. Catch ball in spread fingers 2. Pull ball down to chest and arms

Follow-through 1. Sink hips to stable crouch 2. Use sideways stance with shoulders braced 3. Maintain control of ball

If the ball has been kicked so that the chas-ing players will arrive with the ball, you will need to jump to have the best chance of claim-ing the ball. To time your run, watch the ball as it descends, and move close to and behind where it will land. At the right time, take a couple of strides to go under the ball, form a triangle with your thumbs and index fingers and stretch your arms upwards so that you can see the ball through the triangle (figure 4.7a).

Jump up and into the trajectory of the ball. At the same time lift your front knee to protect yourself (figure 4.7b) and catch the ball at full stretch. According to the Laws, no other player may tackle you when you are in the air, but if someone jumps against you, your knee will act as a buffer to keep him away from the ball. As you land, try to turn away from the chasing team and towards your own. Sink into a strong braced position with a wide base (figure 4.7c).

Wicket-Keeping

Some wicket-keepers appear to the unin-formed observer to be better than others be-cause they are forever diving about and making their takes look spectacular. In fact, the unspec-tacular wicket-keeper usually is more proficient because he uses his feet to get into position without needing to dive. Of course, when the good wicket-keeper reaches the end of his range

of footwork, he must dive, but only then. A top wicket-keeper will spend little time prone on the ground. With consistent bowlers in operation, he will allow for late movement. With an out-swing bowler, the wicket-keeper tries to take balls that come straight through just inside his body. If a ball takes an outside edge, he will have less ground to cover before taking the catch.

MisstepYou frequently have to dive to take the ball when it is not directed at the stumps.CorrectionUse footwork to get to the ball rather than diving unless the ball is at the outer limits of your range.

Standing up to the wicket (figure 8.2, a and b) creates the possibility of a stumping. You are still there to take catches and generally stop the ball, but the batsmen is put under additional pressure, knowing that he must keep one foot behind the line at all times if he is not to be dismissed. Meanwhile, you must ensure that the

stumps are within reach. You do not want to take the ball and then have to move forward before removing the bails. You also should watch the ball from the bowler’s hand. For a right-handed batsman, your left foot will be on the line of the middle and off stumps.

Figure 8.2 Wicket-keeper standing up to the wicket. Weight is on the balls of the feet, gloves are together and ready to rise with the ball. Wicket-keeper still has a good view of the ball. (a) Front view; (b) side view.

Cricket: Steps to Success

PositioningAnother of cricket’s debates concerns whether wicket-keepers should stand back or up to the stumps, especially with the medium pacers. When a wicket-keeper stands up to anyone above medium pace, it certainly gives cause for comment as this is the true test of his ability. But he does not just stand anywhere he fancies, whether up or back. Numerous factors come into play, even when he is standing back, and his job is rather more straightforward.

As a wicket-keeper, you want to make sure the ball reaches you at thigh height when you are

standing back (figure 8.1, a and b). Any lower and edges probably will not carry to you. You would not be comfortable continually taking the ball much higher than that when a higher bounce or a top edge will take the ball over your head. You also want to be in a position to see the ball all the way from the bowler’s hand, which is just to the off side of the stumps. This position-ing should ensure that you take a vast majority of balls with minimal movement.

MisstepThe ball hardly ever comes to you at the right height.CorrectionIf you are standing back, your positioning is wrong. If you are standing up to the wicket, you might be getting up too early. Allow your gloves to rise with the bounce of the ball.

Figure 8.1   (a) Wicket-keeper’s stance when standing back, which gives him a good view of the ball all the way from the bowler’s hand. (b) Wicket-keeper takes the ball at thigh height.

145Shooting

Shooting for intermediate players

Intermediate players should be given a simple control factor (e.g., a gently bouncing ball) before shooting to begin to achieve greater realism.

instep Drive 3

equipmentA supply of soccer balls; a goal with nets

OrganizationRegular goalkeep-ers are appointed. The remaining play-ers are divided into groups of six. Six shooters stand out-side the penalty arc as shown in the figure. The remaining players position behind the goal and along the dead ball line to catch balls until it is their turn to shoot. You stand on the penalty area line.

instructions You lob an aerial ball to the player, who heads it forward, follows it toward the goal, and shoots using the instep drive.

coaching points• The simple act of heading the ball forward gives great realism to the practice.

• The header has to give players just enough time and distance to follow the ball and release the shot. If they head too hard, the ball runs too close to the goalkeeper. It they don’t head the ball hard enough, they have to play it forward again before they can shoot, which destroys the drill.

• Players should head toward their best foot and retain their balance while adjust-ing their feet to strike the ball at goal.

• Players should pick a spot and aim carefully while looking at the contact spot on the ball. Even for a volley with the instep, this will once again be around the vertical center line of the ball.

coaching progressions 1. Players release the shot within 3 seconds of the first headed contact.

2. Players use the nonpreferred foot.

3. You set the target area (e.g., low right) as the player moves into the shot.

4. Players now control the ball into a shooting position with a variety of first touches (e.g., the chest, the thigh, the outside of the foot).

5. Players shoot using half-volley shots. ■

E4520/Slade/Fig. 1.7c/350703/TwoJay!/R2➤➤Rules• Restarts occur when a central defender stops

the ball. The ball is passed to the team that did not make the pass that was stopped. Restarts take place two steps in from the court baseline.

• All passes through the central defended area must be one-handed underarm rolls of the ball.

• Attacking players cannot adjust their positions once they have received the ball.

• Attacking players may pass the ball to each other before returning the ball, but the passes must not travel forward. This is the only time chest passes may be used.

• Central defenders may substitute for each other at any time in the game.

➤➤Movement SkillsPlayers may need additional instruction in the fol-lowing:

• Fundamentals of the one-handed underarm roll

• Disguising the direction of the one-handed underarm roll

➤➤Tactics and StrategiesThe tactics of this game provide distinct learning experiences for both the attackers and defenders. Attackers can employ quick interpasses to make the defender adjust her position and provide gaps to pass through. They can also use the walls to create rebound angles to evade the defender. Disguising the direction of the pass is also an important move-ment skill to incorporate into the attackers’ tactics.

For defenders, recognising and anticipating the possible passing and rebound angles are important tactical developments. They also have to use the

20 TransformingPlay:TeachingTacticsandGameSense

Wall Ball

The attacking tactics in this game relate to the use of a rebound wall pass. This type of pass closely resembles the triangle pass used extensively in games such as field or ice hockey and football. The defensive tactics in the game are similar to many of those found in field positions in invasion games and specifically for goalkeepers in field hockey and football. In addition to those outcomes, the game provides further opportunities to develop players’ footwork and the use of attacking and defensive angles found in net and wall games. This game transfers most directly to badminton, although ele-ments of it transfer to wall games such as squash.

➤➤ Learning ObjectivesPlayers will do the following:

• Roll a ball in an underarm fashion

• Field, or stop, a rolling ball

• Recognise potential passing and receiving angles

➤➤ Equipment• One ball (volleyball, netball, soccer ball or

similar) for every six players

• Two gym benches that act as walls for each court

➤➤ FormationPlace the benches parallel to the sides and position them equally in each half of a badminton or volleyball court. Three teams of two players result in six players per court. Two of the teams position themselves in pairs on each side of the court beyond the badmin-ton minimum-distance service lines or behind the attack lines on a volleyball court (figure a). These players make up the attacking (passing) teams. Their objective is to pass the ball back and forth across the centre of the court. A successful pass through the centre of the court earns a point (figure b).

The other team of two players are the fielders. One of those players positions herself in the centre area of the court between the minimum badminton service lines or volleyball court attack lines. The objective for the fielders is to prevent the ball from passing through the centre of the court. The field-

ers can substitute for each other at their discretion but typically after they have saved a pass (figure c).

The benches act as rebound walls that the attack-ers can use to rebound their passes off to evade the midcourt defender. One of the passing teams has the ball and starts the game by attempting to roll it to the other team.

Games are played for 2 to 3 minutes with a 30-second discussion time-out after the first half of the game. At the end of time, passing teams record their scores, and the teams rotate. The game continues until each pair has played as the central defenders.

➤➤RecipeThe server, positioned two steps in from the back of the court, starts the game by using a one-handed underarm throw, attempting to roll the ball along the floor past the single middle defender to the other attacking team. Depending on the age of the players, you may have to restrict how far forward the attack-ers (throwers) may come; however, they must not go into the defenders’ area.

If the ball is not fielded in the centre area and passes through to the team at the other end of the court, a point is awarded to the attacking teams. The receiving team, on fielding the ball, rolls it back, also using a one-handed underarm technique. Throwers may disguise the direction of the pass (i.e., look one way and pass the other) or fake their throws (i.e., pretend to release the ball two or three times before they actually return it). The walls give play-ers the chance to try to rebound the ball past the central defender.

Players cannot adjust their positions after they have fielded the ball, so generally, return throws are made from where the ball is fielded. One exception to this rule is that team-mates may pass the ball to each other before returning it to their opponents. However, such passes must not travel forward, so the player without the ball has to ensure that she is in line with or behind the player with the ball. In order to speed up this part of the game, these passes can be chest passes; they do not have to be rolled along the floor, but passes used to try and evade the centre defender must be rolled.

Each participant has 10 attempts to pass the ball into the scoring zone. The participant who scores the most points after all have taken their 10 passes wins the game.

Safety Tips• Participants should not pass their ball if someone is in front of them, close to the

passing line. They should wait until this participant has moved out of the way before kicking their ball.

• A participant should watch for other balls being passed when they run out to collect their ball and when they dribble it back in.

• Warn participants to be careful of collisions.

Advice• The ball must stop completely in the scoring zone to earn a point.

• This game cannot be played on fast-rolling surfaces (e.g., in sports halls or on AstroTurf).

• Space participants appropriately.

Variations• Easier/harder: Change the size of the scoring zone to make the game easier or

harder.

• Easier/harder: Change the distance between the passing line and the scoring zone to make the game easier or harder.

• Game variation: Participants work in pairs or teams and line up behind the pass-ing line; the front participant in each pair has a ball. Once they have taken their pass at the scoring zone, participants collect the ball and pass it back to the next participant before joining the back of the line. When the participants have each taken a set number of passes (e.g., 5 to 8), the pair scoring the most points wins.

• Game variation: Participants play for a set time (e.g., 2 minutes) and race to see how many points they can score. After each kick, they quickly collect their balls and dribble them back to the passing line before taking their next kick. They must make sure the ball has stopped in the scoring zone before they count it as a point.

• Game variation: Play with a circular target with three scoring zones similar to an archery target. The centre is worth 5 points, the next outer ring is worth 3 points and the largest ring is worth 1 point. No points are awarded if the participant misses the target completely.

• Game variation: This game can be adapted to long-range, chipped passes. Par-ticipants are set up in pairs. Pairs are set up facing their partner with a passing line in front of them and the scoring zone in between them. The rules are similar, but the participants try to power their kicks so that the ball’s first bounce is in the scoring zone.

• Harder: Participants can use only their non-dominant foot to pass the soccer ball.

• Sport-specific: This game can be adapted to hockey using similar rules.

• One soccer ball per participant

GameUse this activity to develop the correct weighting (or power) for short passes. For the set-up of this activity, see the figure on this page. Use cones to mark a passing line, behind which the participants line up with their soccer balls. Use cones to mark out a scoring zone in front of the participants. The area between the passing line and the scoring zone and the area past the scoring zone are no-score zones. The scoring zone should be between 5 and 10 metres (5.5 and 11 yd) wide, and the distance from the passing line should be dependant on the age and ability of the participants.

When the game starts, the participants have to pass their soccer balls so they roll into, and stop in, the scoring zone. A point is scored for each successfully weighted, or pow-ered, pass that stops in the scoring zone. Any ball that does not reach the scoring zone or rolls past it will land in a no-score zone, and the participant will not receive a point for that pass or kick. Participants collect their balls and dribble back to the passing line.

Student-Involved Formative Assessment 159

Gulikers, Bastiens, and Kirschner (2004) provide a general framework for authentic assessment in an educational setting (see figure 9.1). The essential components of authentic learning are authentic instruction and authentic assessment. These two components are predominant in the construction of teaching-learning scenarios that can lead to greater understanding and integration of content in real-life applications, thus leading to success (actual or perceived) for students. In the context of physical activity and sport, students who feel successful and competent have a better chance of appreciating certain activities and developing enjoyment from physical activity as a whole.

I believe that in the initial development of TGfU, Bunker and Thorpe (1982) intended to provide a solid example of authentic learning in the context of physical education—teaching games in a way that gives students a better chance to understand, learn, and succeed. Let us examine the orga-nization and structure of scenarios for authentic learning. When planning to teach from a perspective of authentic instruction, the teacher must first consider what to teach (content) and how to teach it (authentic instruction). Second, the teacher must also look at how and in what context student per-formances will be assessed (authentic assessment). Assessment is critical for informing and improving the teaching-learning process.

158 Richard

the past quarter-century (Kirk, 1983; Whitehead, 2001). Essentially, a physically literate person can be defined in the following way:

An individual who is physi-cally literate moves with poise, economy, and confidence in a wide variety of physically challenging situations. Further-more, the individual is percep-tive in ‘reading’ all aspects of the physical environment, anticipating movement needs or possibilities and responding appropriately to these, with intelligence and imagination (Whitehead, 2001).

I would argue that the development of physical literacy for all children is an important and ambitious goal that we, as physical-education pro-fessionals, should pursue. To move toward the development of physical literacy, physical-education programs have to be structured, through their content and pedagogical approaches, in a way that nurtures the very essence of this ideology. Thus, to realize this goal, physical-education cur-ricula must provide children with authentic and meaningful experiences.

Curricular reform: toward authentic and Meaningful Learning

In most educational systems across the world, curricular reforms strive toward similar goals, which include improving overall student learn-ing through the development of literacy and numeracy. Specifically, in physical education, the notion of literacy needs to be extended to include physical literacy. Regardless of the subject matter being taught, common elements are found in working toward these goals:

• Student-centered approaches to learning

• Durable and transferable learning through the presentation of authentic and meaningful classroom experiences

I believe that teaching approaches, such as Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU), can lead to the development of physical literacy. TGfU is a student-centered approach to learning sport-related games which aims to foster durable and transferable learning, the very core of authentic learning.

To move toward the development of physical literacy, physical-education programs have to be structured, through their content and pedagogical approaches, in a way that nurtures the very essence of this ideology.

Promoting Children’s Sound Personality Development and Intrinsic Motivation Towards Physical Activity 35

trigger negative affect, such as anxiety, in physical education classes (Barkoukis, 2007).

Achievement goal theory is a social-cognitive framework for understanding motivational processes in achievement settings (Nicholls, 1989). Although research on children’s achieve-ment motivation has yielded several important motivational factors, the two goal perspectives dominant in performance settings are task (self-referenced) and ego (other-referenced) goal orientations. These orientations refer to how success is perceived and how competence is evaluated. Past experience in predominantly task- or ego-involving contexts relates to the development of a personal disposition towards mastery (task-involving) or social comparison–based (ego-involving) goals (Ames, 1992; Nicholls, 1989; Roberts, 2001). These two motivational perspectives have an orthogonal relationship, which means that a child can have a high or low level of both orientations or have a high level in one orientation and a low level in the other (Liuk-konen, 1998). Thus, children may have different combinations of task and ego orientation (high task orientation and high ego orientation, high task orientation and low ego orientation, low task orientation and high ego orientation, or low task orientation and low ego orientation).

It is expected that when a child focuses on task-involving goals, more favourable motivation- related outcomes will result, regardless of whether the child has a high or low perception of compe-tence. Such outcomes are cognitive (e.g., values and expectations towards physical activity, per-ceptions of high physical competence, intention to participate in physical activities), affective (e.g., enjoyment), and behavioural (e.g., continued participation in physical activity, putting effort on physical activities). It is also hypothesised that children will not experience motivational prob-lems when ego-involving goals are emphasised as long as the children are confident in their physical ability. Maladaptive motivational patterns result when children have adopted ego-involving goals but have doubts about the adequacy of their competence to meet the task at hand (Roberts, 2001). A task-oriented goal perspective has been associated with increased enjoyment and intrinsic motivation in physical activity, regardless of the level of physical competence (Duda & Whitehead, 1998; Fox, Goudas, Biddle, Duda, & Armstrong, 1994; Liukkonen, 1998). Task orientation has also been found to be associated with continued participation in sport (Fox et al., 1994). In addi-tion, task orientation is linked with intention to be

physically active (Biddle, Soos, & Chatzisarantis, 1999; Sarrazin, Vallerand, Guillet, Pelletier, & Cury, 2002) and with self-reported physical activ-ity (Dempsey, Kimiecik, & Horn, 1993; Kimiecik, Horn, & Shurin, 1996). Early childhood educators should help children focus on learning, personal development, and effort, and they should decrease focus on normative evaluation. Educators play an important role in creating a favourable social-emotional climate that supports the development of children’s task involvement.

Motivational Climate in Physical education

Motivational climate refers to a situational psychological perception of the activity that directs the goals of action (Ames, 1992; Ames & Archer, 1988; Dweck & Leggett, 1988; Nicholls, 1984, 1989). Motivational climate in early child-hood physical education affects children’s self- experiences and attitudes towards physical activ-ity. In the achievement goal orientation approach, the motivational climate has two perspectives, namely a task-involving and an ego-involving climate. An ego-involving climate stresses perfor-mance outcomes and social comparison between children. This leads to increased external motiva-tion and anxiety, as well as decreased interest. In a task-involving climate, children connect their performance to their personal development, are rewarded for effort, and set their personal goals themselves. A task-involving climate is created if the teacher’s pedagogical and didactical solutions support the development of children’s task orien-tation. A largely applied presentation of task- and ego-involving motivational climate is Epstein’s (1989) TARGET model of education (see table 4.1). TARGET is an acronym formulated from six elements in teaching: task, authority, rewards, grouping, evaluation, and timing.

Within the educational domain, perceptions of a task-involving climate have been found to be related to a pattern of cognitions and affec-tive responses that is likely to enhance children’s involvement in learning (Ames 1992). A task-involving motivational climate has been associ-ated with adaptive affective responses, including enjoyment (Kavussanu & Roberts, 1996; Liuk-konen, 1998; Seifriz, Duda, & Chi, 1992), satisfac-tion (Carpenter & Morgan, 1999; Walling, Duda, & Chi, 1993), intrinsic interest (Cury et al., 1996),

Liukkonen34

behaviour. It also refers to a lack of negative social behaviour, such as violence and bullying. Empa-thetic ability is crucial for altruistic behaviour, which is a central form of prosocial behaviour. Altruistic behaviour has an unselfish purpose, and it reflects empathy and the voluntary nature of activity as well as helping others. Helping behaviour is usually associated with cooperating, sharing, giving, taking care, encouraging, cor-recting mistakes, and strengthening. In modern educational programs, cultivating altruism and prosocial behaviour may be considered funda-mental goals. It is desirable for adults to be con-cerned not only for their own well-being but also for the welfare of others (Telama & Polvi, 2007).

Development of Intrinsic Motivation Through Physical education

Intrinsic motivation is an important determinant of persistence in physical activity. Thus, reliable knowledge is needed about the motivating role of physical education for children. Differences

in the subjective social environment operating in physical education settings—created by signifi-cant others, primarily the teachers—can lead to variability in the psychological consequences of physical activity for children.

Through education, we can expect to increase teachers’ awareness of the psychological and motivational climate in physical education classes. Because the training process in physical education classes is often evaluative, participa-tion in physical education can be associated with social pressure. Competitive and normative evalu-ation create worries about one’s level of compe-tence, especially among boys, for whom it is often important to be physically able (Roberts, 1984). Physical education can be considered more or less an outcome-oriented activity in which the goal is often defined in terms of success and failure. For example, failure when performing a difficult task in front of classmates and the teacher might raise negative affective responses. Furthermore, a less skilled student will also experience nega-tive affect when asked to perform a task in front of others. The possibility of demonstrating low competence, the perceived importance of being competent in the tasks of the lesson, and peer and group evaluation are important factors that can

Cooperative Games  ⦁  55

4.This can be done by passing the object over the head or by swing-ing the legs to the side to pass the object to the student who is next in line. 5.If passing over the head, alert children to pay attention to the person in front. 6.Students can use their hands for balance only. They cannot use their hands to pick up the object. This sounds easy, but after a few turns participants will tire because they are using their often-neglected abdominal muscles. The object is for everyone to achieve the task of passing the objects to the end of the line where the last person places the objects into the hoop. If they had fun, they’ve won! 7.You can pace this activity as you see fit, either allowing the first person to pass the next object immediately or have the group wait until the previous object is passed all the way to the end.

sAfety CONsiderAtiONsMany students will find it somewhat difficult to use their legs and feet. They will have less control and may kick each other, so you may want to have them take their shoes off. If you have limited space, make the groups smaller and have them sit in circles.

tiPs ANd vAriAtiONsYou might want to change the arrangement, perhaps having students sit in a circle facing the middle. Denote a starting and ending point and tell the students that the end person is the one who places the object in the hoop in the center of the group’s circle. You can also have a circle-within-a-circle configuration. Have the beginning person from the inner circle retrieve the object from the center hoop and have the students pass it around to all the participants in the inner circle. When this is completed, the last person in the inner circle passes it to a student in the outer circle; the object is passed around to all. This continues until all the objects have passed through the entire group. Objects can be placed in another hoop outside the outer circle. You can use a timer and see if they can set a group record. This activity is similar to the Inside Out activity in chapter 3, but children use their feet instead.

CrUnCh time

AimThis activity involves as many students as possible in passing items to one another using their feet and legs only. Use various objects found wherever you are; for example, if you are in the classroom, you can use a board eraser, book, empty can, or pencil box. This activity calls into action cooperative teamwork, interpersonal communication skills, decision making, and goal setting. It also challenges personal fitness levels (abdominal strength).

ACtivity OBjeCtives 1.Students will be able to pass items to one another without the

use of their hands. 2.Students will be able to cooperate with one another. 3.Students will be able to identify that cooperation is the key to

achieving the task. 4.Students will be able to identify the value in allowing everyone

to participate.
