Edu-Cater Africa Post Pilot Event Report 2019

1.0 Introduction to Edu-Cater Global

Edu-Cater Global is a non-profit social enterprise that acts as a catalyst in bridging

businesses and education through inspiring, energising and developing individuals to

harness the power of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) to influence Globally, starting in Africa and act as a catalyst to developing stronger and energised

generations that are able to make tangible differences to their communities and economies

through the combination of empowerment from industry and education.

Our vision is to establish, nurture and enhance a world where Science, Technology,

Engineering & Maths (STEM) careers and businesses are overflowing with innovators,

pioneers and leaders, through initiatives that align with our strategic pillars below.

Figure 1: Edu-Cater Global Strategic Pillars 2019

One of the reasons why Africa was selected to be our first continent to launch our initiatives in is because we strongly agree with following statements from Florence Tobo Lobe (2015)1,

“If Africans are to solve problems and to lead social and economic development in their own

countries – rather than leaving it to international aid agencies – all African learners will need

higher-level STEM skills” and “MINDS and BRAINS are Africa’s biggest resource”.

2.0 Event Aims and Objectives

The main focus of this event was to recognise and celebrate STEM related innovations

emerging from Kenya that will positively impact the communities and Africa as a continent. The event targeted to inspire 14-16 year old’s (male and females) from four different

secondary schools in Kenya, by delivering a full day of unique, engaging, thought inspiring

and motivating activities, including guest speakers, practical group activities, show and tell

sessions where rising innovators can come and share their STEM inventions and discuss the

importance of merging creativity and STEM with entrepreneurship. Opportunities for the

students to network with university students and professionals from various companies

were also planned.

Objectives:

1. Develop and stimulate the young engineering minds within Kenya – there is already

a keenness for increased STEM / role model activity thus we are keen to use our

academic and industrial engineering knowledge coupled with our volunteering

capability to support STEM growth outside of the UK and ensure the transition of

students and young professionals into STEM careers and businesses.

6. To gain feedback from the students from the pilot event on what we can improve on,

ready for the official 2020 event.

7. To gain a better insight on the logistics and what else can be improved on.

8. Review the practical activity and the guest speaker’s content to ensure discussions

and advice that are relevant to student and that they benefit them.

9. To gain traction, momentum and publicity ready for the 2020 event.

10. Initiate the development of a Local Network with organisations and incubation hubs

that already have a strong foundation in STEM and universities that have great role

models/ambassadors.

11. Gain interest and support from Kenyan organisations with similar vision to Edu-Cater

Global – specific to 2020 event.

3.0 Event Programme and Highlights

The day began with a range of guest speakers with both local and international experience.

However, most important was the line-ups rich background in Science, Technology,

Engineering and Mathematics. The brief was concise and fulfilled; the speakers shared their

own experience pursuing a career in STEM while making it wholly relatable to the audience.

The figures 5 through to 17 give a brief overview of the day’s activities. In addition, the day’s

agenda is attached in the appendix.

Lastly, the event culminated in an activity. The students were tasked with coming up with an

innovative solution to a range of problems in Kibera; an informal settlement in Nairobi. This

activity was completed in seven groups of approximately 10 students. Three groups focused

on waste management, two on housing and the other two on access to electricity. An activity pack, issued out to students explained the activity’s objectives and outcomes and fulfilled

under the guidance of Edu-Cater’s founding team and STEM Ambassadors.

Students had approximately 90 minutes to develop their solutions to the described

problems. Following this, they had the opportunity to present their solutions to the rest of

the group. The credibility of their solutions was examined by a panel of judges and a winner

chosen, the winning group was awarded a miniature 3D printed jet engine donated by Rolls-

Royce PLC and Raspberry Pi demonstration kits donated by RS Components.

6.0 Potential Future Events and Support Required

Future events will follow a similar theme to this year’s pilot event. They will feature several

schools in a bid to leverage and strengthen peer learning. The events will also feature institutions of higher and further learning as well as companies ranging from start-ups to

larger organisations. This should provide students with the access to the entire academic

and professional value chain. Running these events will require access to finance, equipment,

venues and networks. The founding team is open to partnerships with organisations that

share our ethos and dedication to ensuring we encourage, nurture and enhance students to

make an informed and deliberate decision to explore a career in STEM.

In addition, while we realise the potential such events have in achieving this aspiration, we

are also wholly aware of the need to provide more day-to-day support to these students. To

this end, we are exploring setting up mentorship programmes and after-school clubs that

Page 18: Edu-Cater Africa Post Pilot Event 2019 Report · Disclaimer: This report is a summarised brief on the overall event, includes facts and figures from data captured on the attendees

18

complement learning that is not exhaustively provided as part of the conventional

curriculum.
