  • Milestone 46 years ago:

On April 8, 1968 a number of leading astronomers from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Netherlands met in Leiden to prepare a possible merging of some of the principal existing journals.

1969: A new journal was born

Publishing partner of the scientific communities

  • Many European journals existed:

    • Annales d'Astrophysique (1938)

    • Bulletin Astronomique (1884)

    • Bulletin of the Astron. Inst. of the Netherlands (BAN, 1921)

    • Journal des Observateurs (1915)

    • Monthly Notices of the Royal Astron. Society (MN1895)

    • Zeitschrift für Astrophysik (ZfAp) (1930)

    • Arkiv för Astronomi (1903, 1949)

(The history of the creation of Astronomy and Astrophysics, S.R. Pottasch, Astron. Astrophys. 352, 349–353, 1999)

    Why a new journal?

Publishing partner of the scientific communities

  • • European astronomy was growing after World War II

    • European astronomy was getting stronger: optical, space (ESO, ESRO later succeeded by ESA, etc.)

    • Scientific results needed to be more visible

    • European authors wanted to become better known around the world

    • More efficient to merge several European Journals

    • More visibility if publications were in English

    • European solidarity was becoming stronger

    Why a new journal?

Publishing partner of the scientific communities

  • And now?

46 years later, 580 volumes have been published and A&A publishes 20,000 pages/year

and has a fully international authorship

First issue appeared on January 1, 1969
