Editor's Note

Annually, the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science offers 13 different awards to students and scientists of the Southwest. Among these are two awards, each spring and fall, to graduate students enrolled in Arizona and Nevada institutions of higher learning. Receipt of these $300 awards requires a report, and the recipients are also encouraged to submit manuscripts to be published in the Journal of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science, free of page charges. Last year (2003) two outstanding applications resulted in excellent manu

scripts which appear in this edition of the journal. They are: Kathryn Mauz (Arid Land Sciences, University of Arizona) and Becky Beard (Department of Geography, Arizona State University).

Owen Davis, University of Arizona, Permanent Secretary
