I finally managed to track down these two

albums, from 2007 and 2009. Joe has come up with two

sets which showcase his super (mainly) acoustic guitar

playing. More than a nod to Chet, Merle & Co., many of

the tracks remind me of early Tommy Emmanuel, who

actually guests on “Bergeson Fries”. There are lots of

guitar tricks, like harmonics, jazzy solos, fast pickin‟

moody pieces and other „technical stuff‟. Very good

indeed.

This 2 CD package is mainly vocal, but includes

scratch guitar and the shifts in tempo to the backwards

tape sound at the end”. The Aztecs‟ “Regulation 3 Pufff”

is “a jazzy 7 minute jam session” including Gil

Matthews, Thorpie, Lobby Loyde and others. Loyde‟s

“Slowest Guitar On Earth” is described as “an effortless

guitar jam”. Most of the vocals are, well, forgettable.

This, to my knowledge, is the first all-

instrumental CD released with Cochran‟s long string of

vocal-less tracks. Of course, he is best known to „Joe

Public‟ for his hits like C‟mon Everybody, Summertime

Blues, Something Else and Three Steps To Heaven,

among others. It is stated that Cochran wanted to be a

great guitarist, and the singing came by chance.

Here we have 32 tracks of deceptively simple

guitar, covering rock „n‟ roll, blues, country, shuffle and

stroll. Great.

“Pipeline” No.82, mentioned later, has a great

in-depth feature on The Royaltones. Editors Dave Burke

and Alan Taylor also contribute liner notes to this set,

which contain all of the group‟s recorded output.

Surprisingly, they never released an album, but these

tracks - 30 in all, include some instrumental „classics‟ by

this much under-rated band. Mainly guitar and sax led,

the set also includes “Royal Whirl”, later covered by

Australia‟s Thunderbirds. A real collector‟s item.

INSTRUMENTALS RULE, O.K.? On October 16, 2005, I celebrated my 60

th

birthday at the Empire Hotel in Annandale Sydney, by

attending an all instrumental day. Another such day was

on January 9, with not one, but two instrumental gigs.

The Town Hall Hotel in North Melbourne saw Ben

Rogers‟ Instrumental Asylum and The Futuras strut their

stuff. It was a late afternoon gig, with another fantastic

show. The Asylum featured Prickly Pear, Ginchy, Sandy

Feet, Medina, Torquay, Strawberry Fields Forever,

Synchro, Union Road, Docklands, She‟s Not There, Mr

P.C., Tell Him, First Light, La Mer and Kanga Roux – a

great mix of originals and covers.

The Futuras featured their usual great Hammond

sound on Hung Over, The Pygmy, New Breed, Can‟t Be

Still, 30-60-90, Fire, 21-20, Batarang, Almost Grown and

Paint It Black. Great stuff.

Before proceeding to the next part, may I

remind you to rock along to the Town Hall Hotel, 33

Errol Street, North Melbourne on Saturday 20 February

from 5 till 7.30pm. Ben Rogers Instrumental Asylum are

„going it alone‟ this time, and hope to get enough interest

to turn it into a regular monthly gig. Melbourne readers

should tune into “Vital Bits” on 3RRR (102.7 FM) on the

Saturday morning (8 am) to hear a „live to air‟ promo.

INSTRUMENTALS RULE, O.K.? – PART 2 The second part of this wonderful evening

followed a short drive (by my honourable, and honorary,

chauffeur, David „Bloke‟ Rogerson) to see Steve Flack‟s

Guitar Heroes at the East Brunswick Club in yes, you

guessed it, East Brunswick. Our intrepid reporter Mandy

Hall has been gracious enough to submit the following

report (and photo‟s).

“Steve Flack‟s Guitar Heroes Vol.2 CD was

released last year and features many Australian artists.

Steve brought a few of the guys from the album to

Victoria for the album launch.

The main band featured Steve Flack on guitar,

Michael Smith (The Atlantics, Scandal) on bass guitar

and Colin Burgess (Masters Apprentices, AC/DC) on

drums. Guest guitarists included Denis Wilson (Khavas

Jute), Martin Cilia (The Atlantics, Dave Warner) and Phil

Emmanuel. Locals Phil Manning (Chain) and Bob

Spencer (Skyhooks, Angels) joined the lineup.

The evening started out with a few jazz tunes,

sung by Jill Player-Cotton and accompanied by Steve

Flack on acoustic nylon string guitar. Phil Manning then

did a solo acoustic set, accompanying himself on a stomp

box.

Bob Spencer began the electric part of the

evening, opening with “What Is And What Should Never

Be” by Led Zeppelin. He also did “Jumping Jack Flash”,

which was sung on the album by Angry Anderson, but

performed by Michael Smith on the night. His eccentric

style suited the Rolling Stones song.

Martin Cilia was up next. He did a couple of

blues numbers including “Sunshine Of Your Love”, then

“Night Star”, one of his own tunes. Phil Emmanuel

joined Martin onstage for the highlight of the night – the

instrumental surf song “Bombora”. Written by The

Atlantics, it‟s the only instrumental number 1 hit by an

Australian artist in this country ever. (What about the

Denvermen‟s “Surfside”? - Ed.) They performed

harmony lead, then went off into a jam that included The

Savage (The Shadows), F.B.I (The Shadows) and a bit of

War Of The Worlds (The Atlantics). Cilia and Emmanuel

could have kept going all night, except that Burgess on

drums probably would‟ve passed out at some point from

the relentless surf beat he was hammering out.

Phil Manning did an excellent electric set, then

Denis Wilson got up. His set included “Bell Bottom

Blues” (Clapton). Denis produced the Guitar Heroes

Vol.2 album and has worked with many musicians from

around the world including bass player Bob Daisley.

Phil Emmanuel finished the night with “While

My Guitar Gently Weeps” (Beatles) and “Black Magic

Woman”, the early Fleetwood Mac song that Santana

made famous. His amazing guitar style and energy was a

sight to behold.

The sound at the East Brunswick was far too

loud, which made an otherwise fantastic night fairly

painful. The combination of different guitarists and styles

made for a very entertaining evening of blues (and

occasionally surf) classics.”

Thanks Mandy!

Geoff Jermy, Phil Emmanuel & David Rogerson

We are also considering an informal get-

together / jam session on the Saturday afternoon – let

me know if you are interested!

There‟s another Shadows club in Sydney –

Sydney Shadows Music, not to be confused with the

Sydney Shadows Club. SSM has it‟s own website –

INSTRUMENTAL REVIEW

Tony Hoffman (editor of “Shadsfax”) has a

great website – look for www.instrumentalreview.com

DUANE & DEKE

Deke Dickerson‟s 7th

Annual Guitar Geek

Festival was held on 16 January. This year‟s special

guest was Duane Eddy – a highly successful gig by all

accounts. I‟m looking forward to the DVD. See the

Duane Eddy Circle site for more news of Duane –

LOS JETS

Los Jets have launched their own “TV Channel”

TOURS

SHADS HAVE BEEN!!

Great to see “The Final Reunion – Together

Again” shows with (Sir) Cliff and The Shadows on

Saturday and Sunday 13 & 14 February.

My tickets were the result of a birthday present

from my sisters, and a grateful supporter of

“2Good4Words” and “Shadoz” – many thanks!!

As expected, The Shadows were superb, with

Hank undoubtedly the star. Hank, Bruce and Brian were

well supported by now long-time bassist Mark Griffiths,

and Brian‟s son - the multi-talented multi-instrumentalist

Warren.

The Shadows were on stage for the whole show

(3 hours with a 25 minute break), and did two brackets of

their great instrumental hits. Cliff was in surprisingly

good form and had an extra keyboard player in his MD

Keith Hayman.

My only criticism of the evening(s) was the

exorbitant costs – tickets $139, Program $35, Parking

$15, and a beer was $7.50!!

The sound and lighting were of the best quality,

with giant video screens combining live camera work

with various graphics etc. Full marks to the director!

It was nice to catch up with some old friends

from the past, particularly Ian Kershaw and his lovely

wife Anne, who had flown over from Tasmania for the

event. Many of you will remember that Ian was the chief

honcho of “SCOFA” (Shadows Circle of Friends

Australia). Also caught up with Ian Allen, Len McGill,

Phil Davey and others. Two really great nights. The tour

is now off to Queensland and Sydney, then New Zealand

before winding up in South Africa.

FURTHER REVIEWS FROM OUR

CORRESPONDENTS (ROVING REPORTERS)

“The 50

th anniversary tour completed its

Adelaide visit last night.

As usual Cliff was very good and the Shadows

awesome.

Hank B was on fire last night and when Apache

hit the stage it brought the house down.

At the conclusion of Apache the boys received

an ovation usually reserved for the few artists that reach

the highest pedestal.

Hank B has nudged all but one other from the

top of that pedestal and shares top billing.

It was a moving and exciting experience to

witness it.

At the end of the show 21,999 people staggered

outside in wonder and awe at what they experienced with

this great axeman when he drew out those fabulous

chords from the Fender.

I walked out not in awe, just a feeling of

overwhelming satisfaction and pride in being privileged

to witness such an event, because like you, I have always

known how good he is.”

(John Starkey – Adelaide)

“I was at the Cliff and The Shadows last night.

It was an awesome experience. Hank is still as good as

ever. I think he did not miss any notes. Amplifying his

Vox AC30 has obviously brought back the original

trademark colour of the Strat ‟57 sound. His electronics

have advanced for the better with sharpened refinement

of higher pitched notes while he has successfully

emulated the original 60‟s mellow-sharp, crunchy, space-

going, ever-reverberating sound. Along the way all these

years, he has experimented with other amps, such as

Mesa Boogie. But last night‟s sparkling clear Vox

enhancement was too good to be true.

The whole concert has turned out to be better

than my expectations. It was one of those happy rarities

of this day and age, which I was able to escape into and

fly on with, to the moon.”

(Michael – Melbourne)

Photography by JAC

I‟m sure the comments of our reporters will be echoed by

many – it was certainly a memorable evening, and there

were lots of happy faces. Yet those who know will

probably realize that this will be the last time we‟ll see

Cliff & The Shadows together. But we have so many

wonderful memories….

Speaking of the tour, has anyone had problems

with the DVD? I‟ve heard rumours that a batch of them

have been recalled due to faulty discs. Beware!

JEFF BECK

PETER GREEN

Also due soon are Peter Green & Friends – Fri 2

April will see them at the Prince Bandroom in St Kilda.

No doubt there‟ll be other dates around the country.
