Welcome to the Eighth edition of the Melbourne Chapter’s newsletter. Seasons greetings to all members! During this month, the World Congress of Accountants met in Sydney, Australia. Important changes discussed at the Congress was the emergence of Artificial Intelligence and what it means for our profession. During this month, we had the privilege of hosting a meet and greet event for past ICAI President CA M.Devaraja Reddy and present chairman of PNG Chapter of ICAI CA Shiam Kattapuram. Both Presidents shared their experiences and the need to give back something to the profession and the ICAI came out strongly in both their messages. They also made important points of making our profession relevant by keeping abreast of the latest developments. They emphasized the idea that the Institute was now a global citizen and contributed to 10% of the global membership being only the second largest CA fraternity in the world. Our Institute has received the honor of hosting the next World congress in 2022 in Mumbai. During the month Of October, CPD sessions were held at the Multipurpose room at the Docklands library. “Not having to go through the numerous interview rounds and only being selected due to my skills, was refreshing" says CA Ambuj Goel. Here CA Ambuj Goel shares his job search experience and talks about the Weploy platform which he feels is a good starting point for any job seeker; especially a new migrant in Australia.

Landing your first job is always challenging, for everyone alike, be it in any part of theworld. However, being a new immigrant in aforeign land comes with its own set ofchallenges. Language barrier, lack of localexperience, age, qualification, gender, race, nationality and other such factors can makematters worse. Such issues coupled with littleto no job market understanding and limitednetworking opportunities force many to takeup jobs not relevant to their field of workthereby, only adding to the agony.

As a recent migrant, I was facing similarissues when I stumbled across Weploy. Dueto their platform, I was able to work with aprestigious Melbourne based SuperannuationCorporation. The experience contributedtremendously to my understanding of theAustralian corporate world and, not having togo through the numerous interview roundsand only being selected due to my skills, wasrefreshing to say the least.

Weploy is an innovative Melbourne-basedApp that is building a fearless and moreempowered future. It aims to disrupt therecruitment model and democratisetraditional hiring processes by connectingcompanies and businesses looking for shortterm support staff, with skills-matchedemployees ready to hit the ground running.

To become a member of the Weploycommunity as a “Weployee”, candidates fillWeploy in on their qualifications andbackground, go through psychometric andcognitive tests to determine their skills, andhave just one, quick interview with theagency. When a business or “Weployer”publishes a job, the algorithm matches themto the best Weployees for the job. TheWeployee who accepts the job first via anotification from the App, walks straight intothe role, no interview required.

The Melbourne Chapter of ICAI November 2018 Newsletter 6

It works on the basis that no matter whatyour gender, age or background, as long asyou have the skills, you get the job. Itremoves biased hiring processes, whetherthey are conscious or unconscious andthereby turning the concept of “cultural fit”on its head.

It is also worthwhile to mention thatWeployees are paid a legal hourly fee whichis 10% above the industry rate includingSuperannuation, to ensure that good work isrewarded whenever and however it isperformed.

I am confident Weploy can help othermigrants just like me in their searchfor gainful employment, and I wouldrecommend it to anyone who isfrustrated with old fashioned, biasedhiring methods. CA Ambuj Goel

ICAI has entered into a unilateral arrangement “ Pilot International Pathway Scheme” with CA ANZ for ICAI members based in Australia and New Zealand.

Through this scheme, ICAI members based in Australia and New Zealand would get the CA ANZ membership in addition to ICAI membership by completing 40 hours of self study program and attending a 2 day workshop in less than one months time.

This scheme will increase professional avenues for members in Australian & New Zealand by facilitating recognition of Indian accountancy professionals with local Accountancy qualification in addition to their ICAI qualification.

Further details about the scheme can be seen at https://resource.cdn.icai.org/49849icai-ia39512.pdf.
