EDITODuring the summer, Paris Ile-de-France turns into a gi-gantic open stage. Music, theatre, cinema and shows across the city invite you to come and party.

This new festivals guide shows you where to go to get the best out of the city and its suburbs. Our selection pre-sents the must see events, but also our special ‘insiders’ favourites’. From famous festivals like Rock en Seine at Le Domaine de Saint-Cloud or the outdoor film festival at Le Parc de La Villette, to lesser known ones such as Le Domaine de Chamarande that is promoting live arts; le Bruit de Melun; and musical events in unexpected pla-ces like the Goutte d’Or district below Montmartre or Les Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen flea-market, the choice is as diverse as it is exciting.

This is diversity in its purest form: diversity of writing, of expression and of relationships between people - a sign of the vitality of a region that is a microcosm of the world, a place open to everybody and proud of its human and creative wealth.During the festivals you will see how different cultures and talents are mixed on stage, creating senses and emo-tions, and leading to dialogue and encounters between the inhabitants of Paris and its suburbs.

More than ever, art invites you to discover this ‘new Paris’. So be curious, be imaginative and expect to have some unforgettable experiences and encounters with some ex-traordinary people!

Enjoy the festivals in Paris Ile-de-France.

Don’t try to check on a map, it is not about geography but culture. For a few seasons, the canal de l’Ourcq, that connects Stalingrad to Bobigny, has become the nerve centre of cultural beats. In this rapidly deve-loping area, a real cultural outburst is happening. From the wide space of Le Point Ephémère to the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin, through, of course, Le Parc de La Villette, the dynamic green lung of this expanding area, all cultures, either numerical, popular or international, find a resonance there. It took the area of La Villette only one century to exchange its historical activity and within these former Paris slaughterhouses a cultural pot is now boiling. Numerous festivals are on offer and the greatest of them will, as always, visit the park. Circus arts (Centre National des Arts du Cirque, Pop’s, brand new festival), contemporary creation from here and there (festival 100 Dessus Dessous and Afriques), all musical styles (Scènes d’été, Le Monde à vos Pieds see «Nighthawking», Jazz à la Villette, ) or even cinema (with the major cinema festival Cinéma en plein Air, see «Roll out the Reels»). Yes, live art lovers, you have guessed right. Here a long break is called for. Also there are numerous festivities. You can walk along the canal de l’Ourcq and continue the stroll as far as Bobigny which turns into Bobigny sur Ourcq, the cousin of Paris Plage, implanted too at La Villette, (see «On the Waterfront») from mid-July to mid-August. In Bobigny, come and have a taste of Seine-Saint-Denis Style 2008 version in the Parc de la Bergère with a programme based on climbing, beach volleyball competitions, circus and shows. Alongside the canal, a thousand and one atmospheres to appreciate without moderation!

06/10>20100 Dessus DessousArts gone insaneThis summer this multidisciplinary festival (dance, theatre, performances) takes us to a strange and mar-vellous world. Artists, choreographers and companies hailing from all over the globe question the poetic value of insanity. From the obsessions of Steve McQueen presented by the Italian company Kinkareli (18 & 19) to Baby Boomers and the female warriors of performer Christophe Fiat, they all turn creation upside down!

On the programme, concerts to listen to with your feet into the sand, theme-oriented drinks, blind test, gigantic screen, free hug, organic and fair trade restaurant. Lovers of G-Funk will have their own festi-val (07/4). It will also be the occasion to discover new promising talent such as Lippie’s folk (06/24) and Mister Modo & Ugly Mc Beer’s hip hop (06/19). All that washed down with Brazilian batidas, the classic drink of the place.

06/24>07/12Afriques When art questions the future of a continent... Head for Africa where an inventive unbridled contem-porary creation can be discovered. An event inspired by the year: 2147, from when, according to a UNO report, poverty in Africa «will decrease by half». This is the occasion for directors and choreographers to question the future of the African continent. On the music side there will be three great voices. Mory Kanté, the most Parisian of Guineans, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of his hit song «yéké, yéké», Sa-lif Keita «the golden voice of Africa» and the leader of African rap and the activitist Didier Awadi. So many soundtracks hailing from various places in Africa!

07/13>08/15BoBigny sur ourcq Body and mindFor its 4th edition, Bobigny sur Ourcq puts Paris Plage on the map. A programme for the body and the mind! Here, arts and sports get on well. Sport fiends will be able to satisfy their dreams of climbing thanks to a rock-climbing course for the young and the old. They can also practice archery, initiate themselves to martial arts, or water sports (kayak and mini zodiac). As for arts, the Muller circus and its menagerie settle in the heart of the parc de la Bergère. You can take graphic arts, comedy or music lessons every Saturday night on the converted barge stage. For those who would like to bring together both sports and arts, you can still follow the footsteps of the Yamakassi who are at the same time athletes and acrobats and turn the urban space into a playing field... On top of that, every weekend you can sail on a river shuttle (1 €) from Paris Plage to Bobigny sur Ourcq! Opening on 07/13 with popular diners, strolling ani-mations, music and fireworks. Animations start on 07/17.

09/2>14JAzz à lA Villette When jazz sweeps its boundaries away… After having explored African-American cultures and created galaxies around Steve Coleman, Wayne Shor-ter and Julien Loureau last year, the festival prepares a jazz programme that will be all over the place for this edition. Jazz à la Villette sweeps the boundaries of this musical style away and invites artists from dif-ferent backgrounds. Choreographers, visual artists, film-makers, comedians and musicians will share their taste for improvisation with jazz music during a fifteen day odyssey of discovery of these entertaining deviations.Mathilde Monnier & Louis Sclavis (13), Lalo Schifrin (12), Tortoise, Matthew Herbert (10), Erik Truffaz & Pierre Henry (9), The Ex & Getatchew Mekuria (12), Bumcello (11), Zombie Zombie (3)…

Les Pop’s, also known as the festival des Arts Turbulents, aims to have a new take on circus arts, street arts and theatre. From la Symphonie Mécanique by machine inventor François Delarozière to the pilgrimages of Groupe F in the park, les Pop’s creates an artistic trouble spot which blurs the lines between scholar arts and popu-lar ones... Jazz and gipsy change of sceneryA small island on the Seine, the spirit of the great master Django hovering only a minute away (he is buried in the village), the greatest gipsy jazz musi-cians and gipsy jazz lovers coming every year for a rave-up pilgrimage: this is one of the most bucolic and joyful festivals of the beginning of the summer. A convivial atmosphere where the prevailing mood is the pleasure of the senses and where a new genera-tion of gipsy sounds are discovered every season. This year, the spotlight will be on Shantel & The bucovina Orkestar and their Bulgarian electro gipsy (27). 07/14>08/15PAris quArtier D’été Cultural hive of activityBetween July 14th and August 15th, the two public holidays of the season, the Paris Quartier d’été festival turns the capital upside down. Five weeks dedicated to discovering the best of Parisian and international creation in the fields of dance, theatre, music and circus. As a travelling festival, it has its headquarters everywhere in the capital and in the neighbouring cities. Various forms of music will set up stall in the streets, in parks and in garden pavilions. From the afro beat of the New-York combo Antibalas (08/3>7), to the cheeky tango of the Argentinian former punk Daniel Melingo (07/21>24), through the intimate ballads of the father of concrete music Pierry Henry (08/4>15)… Our favourites include a trip inside the Cour d’Orléans as precursory choreographers (Trisha Brown, 07/16, 17, 20, 28) face the young guard of the new generation, especially the excellent Brazilian company Membros whose creation «Febre» (08/7>9) draws a picture of Brazilian youth that is as beautiful and strong as it is political and violent. As far as theatre goes, the festival gatecrashes some unusual premises of a Paris without borders. In Pantin, near the canal de l’Ourcq, the Belgian company Comp.Marius presents its compilation of Marcel Pagnol’s plays «Marius, Fanny et César» (07/28>08/2), 5 shows punctuated with gastronomic interludes! Bagneux, Saint-Ouen, La Défense and Nanterre welcome the circus arts. As for cinema, screens are set up all over the city, from Porte de Saint-Ouen to the area of la Grange aux Belles. Paris, summer suits you so well!

08/20, 28 & 29rock en seine

Rock cultureEvery year this festival makes us almost wish for the holidays to end! It is a little bit like the fireworks that close the season. Bottom line, this is the essential event of the new term if you want summer days to last longer. It is also the opportunity to see artists who sometimes choose to perform there and nowhere else: the concerts by Rage Against The Machine (20), Kaiser Chiefs (28), Amy Winehouse and The Streets (29) will be their only summer date in France. When he launched Rock en Seine, right in the middle of the 2003 heat wave, François Missonnier (see interview), a lover of rock, pop and other roots sounds, did not expect such an explosive result! The success has a lot to do with the beautiful premises (in gardens arranged by the famous Le Nôtre) and the exceptional programming. For its 6th edition, the magic is still there!REM, Keziah Jones, The Dø, Tricky, Wax Taylor, Serj Tankian, Apocalyptica, Plain White T’S (28), Justice, The Roots, Kate Nash, Jamie Lidell, Black Kids, Louis XIV, DB Clifford, John Spencer Blues Explosion, The Raconteurs (29)…

frAnçois MissonnierCreator of Rock en Seine. «Sun, great concerts, a magical setting...»

What will be the tone of Rock en Seine 2008?It is fully in line with what we’ve been doing since the beginning: cult bands, discoveries of the year, and also a desire for various pleasures. A particularity for 2008: there will be two phases to the festival. At first, a special night with our friends Rage Against The Machine and their guests. We have added this date to be able to welcome them when they decided to perform in France. Subsequently two days of festival, with its three stages, its camping, its atmosphere...

As soon as it was created, Rock en Seine turned out to be the biggest rock and pop festival in the country. It was a bold bet! Basically we wanted to have an end of summer rock festival in a beautiful place. We were not really interested in finding something gigantic - actually it is human-size festival with 25 000 to 30 000 visitors per day – but more into mixing the pleasures of being in a park of exceptional beauty and seeing bands that express artistic variety. As for the very particular atmosphere at Rock en Seine, it is all about the audience! By the way the audience is becoming more and more international: the camp site is totally cosmopolitan!

Last year Amy Winehouse stood down at the last minute. This time will you kidnap her to be sure that she is going to be there? The train tickets have been bought, she will definitely be there! As a matter of fact, she will close the festival.

What do you think of the emerging young artistic scene in Paris? It is very dynamic, intensive and varied! It has also less and less complexes, especially on stage. It is definitely something new to see British festivals fight over French artists such as Justice or The Dø!

What do you want us to wish you for Rock en Seine 2008? Sun!

And what if it rains? Remember the 2004 edition, with the concert of The Muse in the rain: it was just... amazing!

the DøHere is an interview with singer Olivia B. Merilahti. «Rock en Seine, sweet ecstasy and big challenge»

With their first album «A Mouthful» (Wagram), this French-Finnish duet is one of the revelations of 2008. An energy bomb that mixes pop with hip hop, world music and electro. As a matter of interest, when the Babyshambles did not show up at the last Bourges festival, they replaced them on the spot. So it is not surprising to see them on the bill of Rock en Seine. Everybody must keep in mind that the stage performance of The Dø is similar to their music... brilliantly crazy!

Playing at Rock en Seine, what does it mean for a young band?I still cannot realize it! It is like sweet ecstasy! But it is also a big challenge. In this kind of big festival, if you don’t pull it down, then it’s hard to keep the audience’s attention! And you can be judged really quickly. But I need the adrenalin so it’s all good.

Were you a member of the audience of Rock en Seine before becoming one of the top of the bill acts? I went last year for the first time and I loved it! I saw Kelis, Bat for Lashes...

This year, who will you see? Amy Winehouse, if she does come! REM, I can’t wait to see them perform and also Rage. Jamie Liddell, who is really tight on stage. Justice, I was amazed by his show. And Apocalyptica!

Do you feel that the Parisian musical scene is creatively boiling? I think that it is amazing how artists are open to foreign languages: more and more French groups feel they are entitled to sing in English. And, as a matter of fact, they gain international exposure. For me, who evolved between French and Finnish, using English has always been very natural. The fact that more and more artists do it represents a real turning point!

On the mic: Emmanuelle Bosc

artists who will perform, Micky Green, Cocosuma (4), Asian Dub Foundation, Bumcello (5), Toots & the Maytals, The Gossip (6) will be applauded… After the concerts, make way for the dancefloors and the DJs to keep on dancing. Three days and two nights of partying to bring hope! It has become a hackneyed expression between Parisians, a great number of them having been accustomed to spend their Saturday and Sunday afternoon on the grass of this little musical botani-cal Eden. So a great atmosphere prevails over the Paris Jazz Festival, which thematic weekends promise again the best for this year: «Blues & groove» with, among others, James Taylor (06/28), «Trumpets & Saxes» with Wallace Roney (07/6), «World & Music» with Zap Mama (07/12), «Voice

& Colours» with Diane Reeves (07/20), «Jazz & Stars»… Expect afternoons of feverish dance! Then for the weekends of August and September, ex-pect a quieter atmosphere, where the focus is on classical and opera! This year, the Classique au Vert Festival offers up a high-brow programme focused on «music styles firmly inspired by popular traditions». For instance, a genuine sound reconstruction of «Trois Mousquetaires» with the ensemble La Fenice (08/17).

The same goes for the whole host of talent and stars of tomorrow who are worth discovering on at Zebrock, a scene dedicated to make a new musical generation to the fore (rock, rap and French song). And, as always, the warm and family atmosphere, as well as the politics-related stalls and debating plateforms that make this essential event so unique and delightful.

His wish has been fulfilled for the last 6 years with Paris Plage. Every summer, this operation changes the rhythm of life of Parisians and of amazed tourists! Fine sand replaces cars on the banks of the Seine, by day to practice sport or simply to be refreshed by the atomisers, or at night people get together on the terraces of the refreshment stalls along the river... This year the sea resort city is extended and offers a real sand beach in the bassin de La Villette to prac-tice various maritime activities. Here, the rule is that the greatest masterpieces are interpreted by the greatest conductors and the greatest musicians. Another evening not to miss is «Bruckner à Wagner» directed by Myung-Whun Chung (19). As well as the exceptional production by Craig Amstrong (26), the british composer who worked with Madonna, U2 and Massive Attack, will give a concerto for violin supported by a music on the frontiers of classical, contemporary and electro. Let us not forget the big closing party with the production «Jaadu» that connects the gipsy and Indian worlds of Titi Robin, Faiz Ali Faiz and their musicians (27). In parallel to these concerts, the Saint-Denis festival also expands its ramifications via Métis, an extension of the programme in neighbouring sites. From German minimal electro to dubstep and Bri-tish broken beat, through Belgian electronica and Italian disco house, there is a wide range of choices. The headline float will represent the whole European creation and the musical procession will sound like a journey through Europe. Each country will have its own float! All these rhythms share a common desire for partying and bringing people together. This birthday celebration (10 years!) will go beyond borders and will honour Detroit, the city that gave birth to the techno move-ment: we already know that the anthem for this edition will be the cult song by Kevin Saunderson «Rock The Beat». Let’s bet that pioneers Derrick May and Carl Craig will be there. And to keep on dancing all night long, various after parties are planned in the bars and clubs of Paris. Also, it is worth knowing that not only has Techno Parade reduced its use of paper but it still shows its care for the environment by sorting through the waste on its route.

09/24>10/12@rt outsiDers 2008: Art et enVironneMentPole at the centre of the festival! This year the @rt Outsider festival invites you to discover forms of contemporary creation mixing art and environment. It is facing towards both poles with a focus point on I-TASC, the artistic project in Antarctica (official project of the International Polar Year 2007-2008), conceived by the Slovenian artist Marko Peljhan. I-TASC creates a decentralised network of individuals and organisations working together in the fields of art, engineering, science and technologies. All these areas of expertise are combined to make the public aware of environment and energy issues and to think out and set up new polar infrastructures that would have no impact on the environment. This is a project that is worth discovering through the exhibition L’art et les Pôles at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP), that collects works of artists inspired by The Arctic or Antarctica, it also sets up meetings at le Cube (10/12), about the question «Art and environment: towards ecocreation?». This is art to feel and to think about...

Place des Vosges, Parc Montsouris, Parc André Citroën, jardins du Trocadéro… so many magic places to watch cinematic wonders under the stars. This year, the selection offers a journey through other European capitals, via its nomadic screenings. For the kick-off, head for Rome with «L’argent de la vieille» by Luigi Comencini projected on the Butte Montmartre (6), Lisbon with «Lisbonne Story» by Wim Wenders to be watched on avenue de Breteuil (21), then Vienna, Madrid and London seen through the eyes of Aki Kaurismaki, Milos Forman…

audience to the diversity and richness of short films. The international selection mixing all kinds of films, from documentary to fiction through animated or experimental films, will be projected on a giant inflata-ble screen set up just in front of the lake surrounded by cliffs. This year, head for Eastern Europe, with two pieces and a dive into the depths of artist’s videos. A little plus point: every night a concert (always well felt) will kick off the evening. It will definitely attract all enthusiasts of Indian summers!

Welcome LondonBritish week for this brand new but already commendable parisian club that hands over its turntables (from 11pm) to the best Djs hailing from London. Festivities start with a «Breakbeat Kaos Party» that will delight drum’n’bass lovers (18).The day after, a gift: a free night with Auto-kratz and Eddy Temple Morris. And more heavywei-ghts: Late Of The Pier, Black Ghosts, Punks jump up (20), Klaxons, Mark Moore (21). We should not forget a whole host of emerging talent such as the Allez Allez. And strong at the same time! On the edge. It is pretty much the principle of this festival: it has a daring form and invites artists to perform solo, or as a duet or a trio. These intimate shows are at opposite extremes from the flood of sounds and lights of the big stages. The artist, the audience, the music: the formula is simple and so effective! Shannon Wright (06/20), Sanseverino (06/23 & 24), Patrick Watson (07/2) and other artists will indulge in the game of fragility in the magic setting of les Bouffes du Nord. This former «café-concert» (sort of French-style music-hall built in 1876) was reopened in 1974 under the aegis of its manager and director Peter Brook, and since then it has turned into a Mecca for French contemporary theatre. Vincent Segal (06/19), La Grande Sophie (06/22), Damien Saez (06/25 & 26)…

It’s raining starsEvery summer, it’s the same magic at New Morning: the now mythical Parisian concert hall (inaugurated in 1981 with Art Barkley) reunites famous names of the jazz scene for a month of explosive concerts! Because of the layout and the atmosphere of the premises, there is no distance between the musicians and the audience. This season again, All Stars proposes fi-reworks to light up the hall: Archie Shepp & Iswhat (07/3), Brandford Marsalis Quartet (07/10), Avishai Cohen Trio (07/18), Ernest Ranglin (07/26) and so many others... Hot under the big topA festival that has become the international bench-mark. Roots atmosphere, always. But also a confir-mation of the universal energy of current reggae, especially this year as the festival opens his borders wide. Under the big top of Le Zénith (from 7.30 pm to midnight), good vibes come from Amsterdam with Ziggi & Renaissance Band, from Abidjan with Tiken Jah Fakoly, from Sarcelles (near Paris) with les Neg’Marrons, from Pointe à Pitre in the West Indies with Admiral T (27), from Kingston with Shaggy, from Bermuda with Collie Buddz, from New Zealand with The Black Seeds (28)… Every night, the party is set on fire and it goes on until dawn at le Cabaret Sauvage, for sound systems pulsating with the Japa-nese sounds of Mighty Crown (27) and by the New York native Massive B (28), among others. It’s like travelling around the world!

For its first edition, this festival invites you to tour the world and listen to new rhythms every night. Some groups are really worth discovering: Brazil-bred Vanessa Da Mata (15), the most broadcasted artist on Brazilian radio, her music being a mix between pop-rock and samba. Or the Nortec Collective (17), a combination of Mexican sounds, dub and electro music. Another stop is the Balkans represented by the Romanians of the Fanfare Ciocarlia (21) who play the great Romanian classics over groovy beats. And hailing from Macedonia, the Kocani Orkestar (23) mixes Turkish, Bulgarian and Oriental sounds. The crazy guys of Mon côté Punk (19) will raise the temperature too, right before the closing acts «do Brasil»: Marcello D2’s hip hop and beats from the Nordeste by DJ Dolores (26). You couldn’t ask for any more!

08/20>09/7festiVAl Des iDéoA loft for allAfter a successful first edition last summer, this festival inspired by ideals of creative and convivial unity besieges the beautiful space of La Bellevilloise once again. In program: «Musical naps» with DJs, «cinema-concerts» where we can rediscover gems of silent cinema («Die Frau Im Mond» by Fritz Lang, «Frankenstein»…) over acoustic and electronic music. There are also digital art installations, daily shows and theatre workshops for children, «contemporary drinks» in acoustics (on Saturday nights), «clubbing nights» (from Wednesday to Saturday), and the «big dance» with the Orchestre National de Barbès (on Saturdays)… The premises invite you to a «exploratory odyssey» of this immense loft of more than 1000 m2 where we can go from the covered «Big meadow» where deckchairs and hammocks blossom to a funny «SAS», genuine «room of virtual reality» with multimedia installations. The Stars of tomorrowDon’t waste your time searching for top of the bill acts: the young artists who are honoured in this pionee-ring festival packed with talent are still underrated. For its 3rd edition, the festival (formerly known as 18 en scènes) adds literature and cinema to music which remains the essential theme of this high-paced week (several shows each night, that is to say about thirty in all). It features Kim Novak, Da Brasilians, Maya Barsoni, Renaud Papillon Paravel… Also the big closing dance with the Bringuebal Orches-tra should not be forgotten. It is also the occasion to go sightseeing in a somewhat original way : the eight places where the events take place were cho-sen because they are atypical and have a spirit of independence: Les Trois Baudets, Le Divan du Monde, Le Centre Musical Fleury-Goutte d’Or, Le Lavoir Moderne Parisien, La Boule Noire, La Teinturerie de Pumes and l’Espace Canopy. Be there… unless you have a bad attitude!
