The last time our local MP spoke at one of our Breakfast Forum meetings was in June 2008, as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. We are now delighted to welcome the Rt Hon Philip Hammond Secretary of State for Transport to speak at our February 2011 meeting.

He was appointed in May 2010 and the months since have been very eventful for his department, to say the least! Ash clouds, air and tube strikes, potholes, road salt stocks, blizzards, blankets of snow, the high speed rail line, and electric cars, to name but a few!

The official responsibilities of the Secretary of State for Transport include:

Overall responsibility for transport strategy, including economic growth and climate change.

● Spending review ● Transport security ● High speed rail

Runnymede Chief Executive, Paul Turrell, then gave his presentation ‘Beyond Austerity: The Future for Runnymede’ stating that the Council will make savings of £2.6 million over the course of the 5 year financial forecast. He is aiming to generate more income than at present, share services and consider new forms of service provision.

Four sixth form students from Salesian School were among the 69 delegates, they were asked to give their thoughts after the meeting:

‘The breakfast meeting was a really interesting insight into the council budgets and where their receipts come from and where their payments go. Meeting businesses in the region helped our own young enterprise business ‘Mugnificent’, and we gained some valuable contacts. Even though some of the presentation was slightly confus-ing, we still had a really good time.

Thank you

Lauren, Katrina, Jack and Phil

It’s YOUR Business! Thursday 18 November 2010This was the second breakfast forum consultation meeting to be hosted by Runnymede Borough Council, at the Civic Centre in Addlestone. In these difficult times, it was no surprise that the Director of Finance, Stuart Cawthorne, gave a rather gloomy budget forecast for the Borough. The Government at this time had not announced the Grant Settlement for local authorities.

Runnymede has the lowest Council Tax rates in the County and the 6th lowest in England. Whilst the Government is offering a grant in lieu of an increase of Council tax, this will cause special problems when attempting to meet service requirements. Local Councils have to provide certain services, for which costs can rise for rea-sons beyond the Council’s control.

Chairman of the Runnymede Business PartnershipDoes the word ‘sponsorship’ to you mean just pouring money into a black hole?

Well, how about seeing a big yellow bus full of 60 local students on their way to school, which has YOUR company name on it, and knowing that all 60 students recognise their bus by YOUR company logo?

Some of the seven Runnymede Business Partnership buses make two trips every morning and afternoon, as well as day trips all around the South East for local students. The service keeps running through all the bad weather, so the scheme is very popular with parents and students alike.

If you would like to know more about sponsorship please ‘phone 01932 425272, you can also visit www.yellowbus.info for information.
