    Imaginaon Unparalleled

    E. Sudhakar completes 10 years in WaterHealth

  • FROM THE COO'S DESK

    Dear Colleagues,

    Greengs!

During the last quarter, WHIN implemented the projects of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporaon (IRCTC). Water Vending Machines (WVMs) were launched at a few staons including Jaipur and Tirupathi. WaterHealth Centers (WHCs) and Water Dispensing Units (WDUs) were also launched at certain locaons in New Delhi.

Apart from this, the Company is in the process of forging strategic partnerships with naonal and internaonal organisaons to expand its footprint in other countries, WaterHealth will therefore conduct feasibility studies in the idenfied countries of Africa and South East Asia.

WaterHealth Ghana launched the Nokosuo campaign to help increase adopon of dr. water in the country, this is a program akin to the Unna campaign being run in India currently. Ghana also reported 100% growth in delivery volume in August, 2016 as compared to May, 2016. The WHG team has incorporated Jaldhaara Foundaon (JF) in Ghana (global NGO partner of WaterHealth). The Foundaon is expected to be launched formally in the current quarter.

Over the last few quarters, WaterHealth Nigeria (WHN) has shied its focus towards solicing funds from mul-lateral and developmental agencies for Community Water Systems (CWS) instead of corporates (under their CSR program). The Company has also been successful in establishing Outright Sales (ORS) business line and Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) as other revenue streams. Like WHG, WHN has also started the process for incorporang Jaldhaara Foundaon in Nigeria.

As is evident from these plans, the Company is now poised for unprecedented expansion and growth. I hope that all of you will put in your best efforts and be an acve part of the audacious goals that we plan to pursue this year.

I wish you all the best!

    Yours sincerely,

    VIKAS SHAHCHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

  • Water Vending Machines (WVMs) have been installed and have commenced operaons at few railway staons as part of the IRCTC project. Apart from iniang operaons at exisng staons, the Company has also won bids for the clusters of Bhopal, Jabalpur and Ernakulam.

WaterHealth Centres (WHCs) and Water Dispensing Units (WDUs) were launched at Alipur, Mubarakpur Dabas and Batla House in New Delhi as part of the DJB project.

In its endeavour to develop effecve avenues for water management, WHIN is partnering with DLF Foundaon to set up a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Gurgaon.

The Company is planning to expand in new countries, feasibility studies for which are being carried out in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia in Africa. Apart from this, the Company is exploring the prospect of expansion into Indonesia and Vietnam in South East Asia.

Ghana has reported 100% growth in delivery volume in August, 2016 as compared to May, 2016. Higher number of DSPs and increasing producvity has led to the increase in the volume growth.

Nokosuo Launch, the WHG team successfully launched Nokosuo (Unna) social awareness campaign to create awareness and to bring about behavioral change towards safe drinking water.

th Jaldhaara Foundaon in Ghana was incorporated on 30 June 2016. Jaldhaara (Ghana) Foundaon is expected to be formally launched in the country in December, 2016.

WHG is exploring innovave ideas (like 'push carts') to assist in delivery and increase the volumes.

WaterHealth Nigeria (WHN) also iniated the process for incorporang Jaldhaara Foundaon in Nigeria.

    COVER STORY10 years with WHIN

thE. Sudhakar's journey in WHIN began on 26 April

2006 when he joined the Company as an Operator

the oldest employees in WHIN, Sudhakar has

    WHIN'S 'CHANAKYA' SUTRA

Aer learning the ropes of hard core sales, Vikas

moved away from Tata Donnelly to join a Venture

Capital cum Consulng firm called PSi Inc. This was a

    c o m p a n y f o u n d e d b y t w o ( 2 ) s e a s o n e d

professionals, one (1) was an ex-partner from

McKinsey while the other had worked in Bain

    Consulng.

It was at PSi that Vikas learnt the importance of

communicaon and presentaon. Both the partners

at PSi were fairly accomplished in the areas of both

wrien and oral communicaon, McKinsey and Bain

are known globally for their communicaon prowess

i.e. their memos and presentaons are simple, clear

    and compelling.

An incident at PSi le an indelible mark on Vikas'

mind. He was given an assignment to write the lead

story on the Stock Market of India. Since he was

confident of his wring skills (or perhaps a lile over

confident), he felt it was a fairly simple assignment.

Vikas wrote the story that made sense to him and

shared it with his supervisor. On reading the note, his

boss did not say anything but just tore the document

to shreds and asked him to rewrite the story. Vikas

was shocked and deeply hurt, finally the document

went through fieen (15) iteraons before it got

published. While this was a very disconcerng

experience for Vikas, he took it up as a challenge and

promised himself that he would master the art of arculang

his thoughts into crisp and clear English. He went back to the

basics, refreshed his knowledge on English Grammar

through 'Wren and Marn', learnt how to first create a story

board before even seng a pen to the paper. Overme not

only did he improve his wrien and presentaon skills

immensely but also ensured that people associated with him

acquire the ability to communicate and arculate their

thoughts clearly. Even to date Vikas is accused of being

finicky about how a document should be wrien and how

should the thoughts be presented, however despite that

cricism most of his colleagues concede that their standard

and qual i ty of communicaon has improved

considerably by virtue of his insistence and coaching.

Another thing that Vikas learnt at PSi was the

importance of being systemac, logical and

    structured. At PSi most assignments

    involved making sense of ambiguous

    situaons like determining the market

    size, entry strategies, product launch

plans etc. Moreover those were the

    mes when internet was not

    available, research and syndicated

reports were unheard of, one had

to do one's own research (in a

    library or from newspaper archives)

and come up with a game plan. During

    Learnings from life

  • at mes felt uncomfortable with his habit. He felt that a

supervisor should allow a certain amount of freedom to

the subordinate and have the ability to disnguish

between people who need close supervision and those

who don't, otherwise it may be sfling and de-movang

    for a self-driven employee.

The next lesson that Vikas learnt while at PSi was that

business modelling alone cannot be a recipe for sucess, it

actually takes me, effort and significant focus to get

these things done on field. His boss who had a sound

theorecal business knowledge (many a mes) believed

that a theorecal model on paper is as good as the

executed plan. However Vikas realized that many of well

thought out projects or plans could sll fail because of

poor or mediocre execuon. PSi back then in 1996 had set

up a Mould and Dies tool room at a cost of `25 crores

called Vulcan Moulds and Dies. While the Company had

hired an American tool room expert to run the

operaons, both the founders from PSi (who were from

the consulng business) had limited knowledge of the

operaonal/execuon aspects of the business. The result

was that the tool room faced considerable delays, did not

fulfil the key customer orders, the projects underwent

cost overruns etc., all of these debacles eventually led to

the business being sold off at a huge loss. The insight was

that one should possess not only the theorecal

knowledge but also the operaonal experse (to know

what actually works on the field) to run a successful

enterprise. It was during this phase of his career that

Vikas learnt the importance of regular reviews and

    receiving frequent business updates.

this me Vikas got an assignment to work for

a company called Amoco that wanted to set

up operaons in India and sought stascs

and details on compeon, predominantly a

    large Indian petrochemicals Company. This

was expected to be doubly difficult given that

the Company was known to be very guarded

    and cauous about informaon.

Vikas was assigned the task of procuring this

informaon, he felt like a 'CBI agent', he

managed to spend close to three (3) weeks at

the project site and procured the desired

    informaon. Vikas realised this assignment

could not have been concluded if the enre

team back at PSi had not supported him with

datamining and real me analysis, it was aer

    all a team effort.

The third most important lesson that Vikas

learnt during his tenure at PSi was to be task

oriented. His boss had the habit of carrying a

to-do-list with him wherever he went; he

would compare his to-do-list with his team's

list and strike off the tasks that were done,

this way he ensured that all planned tasks

were concluded. This is another habit which

    Vikas follows diligently ll date.

At PSi Vikas learnt not only what to do but also

what not to do. One of his supervisors was a

micro manager who would get involved in

every aspect of a given (delegated) task, Vikas

Ingenious Innovaons in Water Purificaon IndustryAs we all know, food and shelter are crucial for living however the most essenal element for survival is water as nobody can survive for very long without water. That's why, since the beginning of history, civilizaons have lived near abundant sources of H O.2

But it's not enough just to drink water. The same water that gives life can also make people sick or even kill them, if it is contaminated. And since people use water for acvies such as irrigang crops, washing and waste disposal, sources of water close to a human populaon can easily be contaminated.

The current water crisis is one of epic proporons, it is alarming that more than 3.5 million people die each year from water-related diseases. At any given me, half of the world's hospital beds are occupied by those suffering from illness due to unsafe water, poor hygiene and sanitaon.

Given these disturbing facts, it's imperave that visionaries, inventors, designers, engineers around the world find a soluon to this problem. Fortunately there's no dearth of innovaon; read on for some novel designs for water purificaon devices!

    2. Water Purifying Bicycle: Cycloclean, a water-purifying bike, was designed by a Japanese company called Nippon Basic for remote vil lages and disaster zones. Used for both transportaon and filtraon, the bicycle can transport people in remote areas to places where they can find water, then the four (4) aached filters purify the water, harnessing the kinec energy produced by pedaling. The Cycloclean can produce 6 liters of drinking water per minute.

    1. LifeStraw: The LifeStraw is a small cigar-shaped tube packed with some truly innovave engineering. This clever design purifies water from potenal pathogens like typhoid, cholera, dysentery and diarrhea, all before they reach your lips and body. The product is an inexpensive way to deliver potable water to those in need and can be considered an icon of humanitarian product design.

    3. LUVWater water bole: Designed by four students at Carnegie Mellon University, the product is basically a water bole with built- in ultraviolet LEDs to purify the water in the bole. The bole is composed of two secons, a water container and an external chamber. Once water is filled in t h e wate r c o n ta i n e r, w h i c h

releases electrical energy through a small generator in the external chamber. The electrical energy is stored and is used to power the UV LEDs which purify the water in the bole.

    4. Hamster Ball-Shaped Solarball: A t r i p t o C a m b o d i a i n s p i r e d J o n a t h a n L i o w, a g r a d u a t e student at Monash University to design a simple product that could help people and the Solar ball was created. This Solar ball is a spherical device that ulizes the power of the sun to purify water. When placed in the sun, the ball

    uses evaporaon to separate dirt a n d c o n t a m i n a n t s . T h e condensaon yields over three quarters of a gallon of potable water every day. The bal l i s relavely small in size, therefore easy to transport and is also affordable.

  • KNOW YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM

Who is Madhu Krishnamoorthy? (as a person, as a professional, can menon personal interests and hobbies)

I am basically a private and a reserved person and a hesitant socialiser. This

side of me however takes a backseat when I am at work, given my role as a

Sales/Business Development professional. I have over 18 years of work

experience spanning automobile, telecom and online learning industries

across India, Middle East and Canada. If I keep aside the first two (2) years

of my career where I was in a support role, the rest of my professional life

has been all about acquiring customers and building relaonships. I

consider myself a result oriented individual who also expects the same

from his team members. I also believe that a sale is not complete unl the

money is in the bank but also drive myself to ensure that my customers see

me (and my team) as people who are helping them buy rather than ones

who are selling things. As a person, I am a fitness enthusiast and love

sports. I run quite oen and this is one sport which, for me, is more

therapeuc and has a meditave value in addion to the physical

strengthening. I also love playing cricket. During my personal me I like

playing with my two (2) kids and as a family we enjoy driving to vacaon

desnaons. My hobbies include reading books and watching movies.

Where are you from? (nave place, family background, educaon, beginnings etc.)

My family comes from Thanjavur district in Tamil

Nadu where I was born however most of my

schooling was in the cies of Bangalore

and Chennai. Then I moved to Salem (a

town in Tamil Nadu) to do my

    engineering in Electronics and

    Communicaon and followed it up

with a Post Graduate degree in

    Management from Symbiosis Centre

for Management and HRD, Pune. My

father worked all his professional life in the

automobile sector while my mother was a

home maker. My father is now rered and my parents spend their me

between Chennai, Hyderabad and San Jose (where my sister lives). My wife

Smita, a so skills trainer by profession, is now a full me working mother,

ensuring that our sons Aryaman and Abhimanyu (aged 8 and 6 respecvely)

are being shepherded through their formave years.

  • How and why WaterHealth?

Aer spending over seven (7) years, between 2000 and 2007, in the

Middle East and Canada selling online educaon and training tools

and plaorms, I decided it was me to come back to India and pursue

a career in a more challenging environment. Like many others before

me (and aer me also for sure) I was quite scepcal when I heard

about WaterHealth and its business model. Coming from sectors

which were more established and advanced, it was like going back to

the basics however I took the plunge and have not looked back ever

since. The learning in this organisaon has been immense and has

able to bring out certain aspects of my personality which I never

    knew existed.

The journey so far in life and in WaterHealth?

WaterHealth is probably the only me in my career, so far, where I have

experienced the saying change is the only constant in life. Beginning

from trying to sell WHCs to Corporates to expanding our operaons in

Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat to heading the Capital Business

Unit, it's been one roller coaster ride. While I know that the journey has

been hard and with a fair share of failures, I know that the type of work

we are doing in WHIN is something that I will be proud of forever! I have

loved the challenges that the senior management has thrown at me and

I have been able to meet those head-on with a calm head on my

shoulders. I am sure that this organisaon will go places in the near

future and all of us will one day sit back and fondly remember the iconic

    workplace we have built.

    The larger ambions in life?

My bigger ambion in life is to rere by the me I am fiy (50) and

travel the world and meet different kinds of people. My materialisc

ambions include owning a house in Goa and driving a Porsche for the

    rest of my rered life.

Message/moo that you would like to share with colleagues? Problems are like weeds, if you don't get to the 'root' cause, they will

keep coming back to trouble you, each me stronger than before.
