Ford Australia has announced the intro-duction of Ford Motor Company’s pat-ented high-efficiency EcoBoost engine technology to the Australian market.

Ford’s high-performance, fuel-saving EcoBoost engine technology will make its Australian debut in mid-2011, marking another major milestone in Ford Australia’s plan to bring a range of sustainability initiatives to market, following the launch of Australia’s first locally-produced diesel vehicle, the new SZ Territory.

Mondeo will spearhead the local launch of this new generation powertrain technology, which uses direct injection and turbocharging to deliver more power and performance from a lower displacement powerplant, yet with im-pressive fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.

“Our new family of Ford EcoBoost petrol engines, which are being rolled out around the globe, represent a key element of Ford Motor Com-pany’s global ‘Blueprint for Sustainability’,” Bob Graziano, President & CEO, Ford Australia said.

“We believe that these engines will provide cus-tomers with a genuinely attractive alternative to diesel or hybrid power units, delivering highly competitive fuel economy and cost-of-owner-ship, along with the responsive performance and wide rev range that have made petrol en-gines the favoured choice for so many drivers.”

Mondeo will be first local Ford model to benefit from the global family of EcoBoost engines, util-ising an EcoBoost 2.0-litre four cylinder direct in-jection turbocharged petrol engine, which pro-duces 149 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque.

The 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine will be available on Mondeo Zetec and Titanium hatch mod-els when it goes on sale mid year, in addition to the existing 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engine, which is already available across the range.

The 2.3-litre Duratec petrol engine will remain available only on entry level LX hatch and wagon variants following the introduction of EcoBoost.

Mondeo is among the first vehicles glob-ally to offer the all-new EcoBoost 2.0-li-

tre engine, which heralds a new era in Ford’s petrol engine development.

Featuring lightweight all-aluminium construc-tion, the latest-generation high-pressure direct injection system, low-inertia turbo-charging and twin independent variable camshaft timing, the EcoBoost engine has an advanced combustion system that brings new levels of performance and fuel effi-ciency to petrol engines in this power range.

The EcoBoost 2.0-litre engine has a maximum power output of 149 kW at 6000 rpm, combined with maximum torque of 300Nm, which is delivered across a broad 1750-4500 rpm range.

Yet even with this level of performance, fuel

economy and CO2 emissions from the Eco-Boost engine are significantly improved.

Compared with the previous 118 kW 2.3-li-tre automatic powertrain, CO2 emissions are reduced by over 17 per cent to 187 g/km, even though the new engine has 26 per cent more power and 44 per cent more torque.

The EcoBoost 2.0-litre engine is mated to a new Ford PowerShift six-speed automatic transmission that is specifically calibrated to take advantage of the engine’s power curve, providing drivers with a powertrain that combines outstanding performance and efficiency with supreme refinement.

With significant improvements to torque out-put and fuel efficiency, Mondeo EcoBoost

generates over 30 per cent more torque than its key petrol engine competitors in the Me-dium segment, while at the same time deliv-ering up to 10 per cent better fuel efficiency.

The core strategy behind EcoBoost is to down-size engine capacity so that larger naturally-aspirated engines can be replaced by much smaller units without sacrificing power output.

A key advantage of the EcoBoost approach to downsizing is a petrol engine that uses less fuel and produces fewer emissions. When combined with the use of turbocharging and other powertrain technologies, it also deliv-ers significantly improved torque and the performance of a larger capacity engine.

Home On Wheels An Attractive Option For RetirementAs some of us begin to ponder retirement, those keen to one day spend the kids’ inheritance will have to tackle one of the most important deci-sions facing the modern Australian baby boomer:

“Should I buy a caravan, or a holiday house?”

Australia’s largest RV manufacturer, Jayco, has re-cently conducted consumer research* which sug-gests one in two Australians over the age of 45 would consider buying an RV instead of a holiday house upon retirement. And these aspiring grey nomads aren’t making their decision based on price alone.

Jayco’s Marketing Director, Andrew Ryan, said the survey found the most popular reason for pur-chasing an RV in retirement was the freedom it offered.

“Nearly three quarters of respondents over the age of 45 (74.9 percent) indicated that the rea-son they would buy a van in retirement is so they could go where they want, when they want. Around 56 percent of respondents also indicated they’d choose a van over a holiday house because they’d like the chance to see more of Australia,” Mr Ryan said.

“Only a quarter of people said that they would buy an RV because it was a cheaper option than a holiday home.”

Those that prefer the traditional holiday house said they like having a base to entertain their friends, and prefer more structure and certainty to their holidays.

“Sure, an RV holiday isn’t for everyone,” Mr Ryan said. “However, many people are surprised when they see how comfortable RVs can be. Obvi-

ously, Jayco has particular models which cater to the more senior market with a focus on space and luxury,” Mr Ryan said.

Functionality in RVs rated highly in popularity with the 45+ age group, with close to half (46 percent) indicating that amenities and add-ons such as showers, awnings and barbeques were essential to a good caravan holiday.

“The best part of the whole experience is that there are thousands of locations around Australia you can take an RV – the possibilities are endless.

And with more than 70 percent of the popula-tion agreeing that caravanning is experiencing a revival, perhaps we’ll start to see a shift from the ‘holiday house’ to the ‘vacation vehicle’. Only time will tell.*Jayco conducted an online survey amongst 1004 Austra-lians using research company, Pure Profile. Of the population sample, 493 were aged 45 or older. The 493 respondents were broken down into three categories, 45 –54 (187), 55-64 (148) and 65+ (158).
