ANDRIES VAN HEERDEN - CEOFrom time to time we all meet people who eventually make a big impact in our lives.

One such person in my life was Laurie Korsten and I wish to pay tribute to the enormous impact he had on my life and also on many other people’s lives.

I got to know Laurie when I was still a child and over the years our relationship grew to become very special. In the end Laurie was my friend, mentor and business partner.

He was actively involved in the design and establishment of Afrimat. In all of this, I got to know him as a visionary with real integrity.

He had a warm heart for other people and was very generous. His wisdom was an inspiration to all who knew him and he lived in obedience to his Creator and Saviour.

The Board of Directors will miss Laurie’s wisdom and strategic insight.

I will miss his wise advice and his ability to think really big.

WESTERN CAPE 2013Compiled by Davin GilesI ended off the previous Afrimatters Communication with ...

Today is the start of the greatest days of our life, so much so that I have no doubt we will exceed our budget by 100%.

Well, the weather has thrown everything at us for the month of June. We have experienced wind, rain, hail and sunshine, yet all staff remain positive with a single goal and vision in mind.

Afrimat Western Cape will exceed a PBIT of twenty million rand, for the financial year ending February 2014. Simply put, we need to make in excess of R2 000 000 per month for ten months. So how are we doing? Thanks to your dedication and efforts we are well on track, having achieved a PBIT of R6.3 million YTD for the month of May i.e. an average of R2.1 million per month. Three months down with seven to go...My concerns (which you continually prove me wrong on) are the months of June and July, which are historically our worst winter months in the Western Cape. The sales team are in the process of finalising a number of major projects, some of which you will read about in this edition, which will carry us through the second half of the year.We are seeing a growing culture of teamwork within the Western Cape Business Unit, where all things are possible as we work together.Listening to Miley Cyrus on the radio in the week (it randomly came on before you judge me), the words rang true for the year we are having. I have attached some of the lyrics:

The struggles I’m facingThe chances I’m takingSometimes might knock me down, butNo I’m not breakingI may not know it, butThese are the moments thatI’m gonna remember most, yeahJust gotta keep goin’,

And I, I gotta be strongJust keep pushing on, ‘cause

There’s always gonna be another mountainI’m always gonna wanna make it moveAlways gonna be an uphill battleSometimes I’m gonna have to loseAin’t about how fast I get thereAin’t about what’s waitin’ on the other sideIt’s the climb

Take time to enjoy “the climb” and your success, while remaining humble for our good fortunes. We are improving our business daily, with long-term sustainability foremost in our mind.

ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

4.

An Essential Maintenance Management Workshop was held on Friday, 30th and Saturday, 31st August 2013 at the Vryheid Workshops for the Afrimat Aggregates KZN employees and the focus was on improving maintenance within KZN. Feedback from the employees who attended was very positive. The course was well presented and in particular the maintenance simulation game was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The employees were divided into four teams which then had to compile a budget from information supplied by Mr Harold Robinson, the workshop presenter. Each team then had to maintain a mobile jaw crusher for a period of 12 months and keep the crusher running whilst limiting their spending on R&M. The winning team was the team which managed to spend the least amount of money during the 12 month period.

The purpose of the simulated game was to identify how different maintenance tactics can affect the performance of a crusher.

ACP brought all the Sales ladies and gents together on the 31st of August in Vryheid to find a common goal: how are we going to exceed customer satisfaction? With enthusiasm, discussions were had and very positive suggestions came up and are being implemented. Topics ranged from, how to deal with irate customers, telephone manner, and a host of other operational issues were raised and discussed. It was great to witness how we all have the same problematic issues, but how differently they were solved.

LEADERSHIPBy John C. Maxwell. 23 August, 2013. Leadership Wired Blog

… Life is difficult… for everyone… and for some more than others.Acceptance of those truths allows us to take the first steps toward dealing with and possibly changing our reality.

Unfortunately, many of us make life more difficult than it needs to be through our attitudes and actions. Here are some ways that people create barriers to success for themselves:

LIFE IS DIFFICULT – DON’T MAKE IT HARDER FOR YOURSELF

Page 11: Edition 2013/03 30 September 2013

1. Life Is More Difficult for Those Who Stop Growing and LearningAs you know, some people never make the intentional effort to grow. Some think they will grow automatically. Others don’t value growth and hope to progress in life without pursuing it. For such people, life is more difficult than it would be if they were dedicating themselves to continual improvement.

While some people experience greater difficulties in life because they refuse to grow, there are additional kinds of people who create difficulties for themselves: those who become satisfied with their gains and start to plateau.

A few years ago Margaret and I visited the Nobel Museum in Stockholm, Sweden. We spent hours listening to lectures and reading about people who have made a difference in so many lives. Our tour guide shared something with us that day that surprised us. He said very few of the Nobel Prize winners ever did anything significant after they had been recognised for their achievements. I found it hard to believe, but after doing some research I concluded that he was correct. Daniel McFadden, who received the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2000, said, “If you’re not careful, the Nobel Prize is a career-ender. If I allowed myself to slip into it, I’d spend all my time going around cutting ribbons.” Literature winner T. S. Eliot stated it even more strongly: “The Nobel is a ticket to one’s own funeral. No one has ever done anything after he got it.”

Success can have a way of distorting our view of reality. It can make us think we are better than we really are. It can lure us into believing we have little left to learn. It can convince us that we should no longer expect to face and overcome failure. These are dangerous concepts to anyone who wants to keep improving.

How do we fight such ideas? By facing reality. Winning causes people to relax and enjoy the spoils of victory. Do that and you just may coast your way to failure.

2. Life Is More Difficult for Those Who Don’t Think EffectivelyOne of the most striking things that separates people who are successful from those who aren’t is the way they think. I feel so strongly about this I wrote a book about it called,

People who get ahead think differently than those who don’t. They have reasons for doing what they do, and they are continually thinking about what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and how they can improve.

That doesn’t mean that good thinkers always succeed. No, they make mistakes just like everyone else. But they don’t keep making the same mistakes repeatedly. And that makes a great difference in their lives. Frank Gaines, who was the mayor of Berkeley, California, from 1939 to 1943, explained,

9.8.

HOW SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE THINK

Page 12: Edition 2013/03 30 September 2013

10.

It never bothers me for people to make a mistake if they had a reason for what they did. If they can tell me, “I thought this and reasoned so, and came to that decision,” if they obviously went through a reasonable thought process to get where they did, even if it didn’t turn out right, that’s OK. The ones you want to watch out for are those who can’t even tell you why they did what they did.

We often make life harder for ourselves when we fail to think. A joke I came across years ago describes how many people make a bad situation worse by failing to think things through. It describes the strategies people use when they discover they are riding a dead horse. They try the following:

• Buying a stronger whip• Changing riders• Saying things like, “This is the way we’ve always ridden this horse”• Appointing a committee to study the horse• Arranging a visit to other sites to see how they ride horses• Changing the by-laws to specify that “horses shall not die”• Harnessing several dead horses together for increased speed• Declaring that “no horse is too dead to ride”• Providing additional funding to increase the horse’s performance• Purchasing a product to revitalise the dead horse• Forming a quality circle to find uses for dead horses• Revisiting the performance requirement for horses• Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position

These ridiculous practices were cited as being used in business, but we can do such things in any area of our lives when we don’t use our heads. Life is filled with plenty of disappointments and heartaches without our adding to the problem.

3. Life Is More Difficult for Those Who Don’t Face RealityPerhaps the people who have the hardest time in life are the ones who refuse to face reality. Author and speaker Denis Waitley says, “Most people spend their entire lives on a fantasy island called ‘Someday I’ll.’” In other words, they think, Someday I’ll do this. Someday I’ll do that. Someday I’ll be rich. They don’t live in the world of reality.

Roots author Alex Haley observed, “Either you deal with what is the reality, or you can be sure that the reality is going to deal with you.” If you want to climb the highest mountain, you can’t expect to do it overnight. You can’t expect to do it unless you’ve been trained in how to climb and gotten into physical condition. And if you try to deny reality and make the climb anyway, you’re going to end up in trouble.

10. 11.

Life is difficult. But here’s the good news: many of the things you desire to do in life are attainable—if you are willing to face reality, know your starting place, count the cost of your goal, and put in the work. Don’t let your real situation discourage you. Everyone who got where they are, started where they were.

Adapted from Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Learn

Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) is the general conceptual foundation towards life long learning and development, comprising of knowledge, skills and attitudes required for social, economic and political participation and transformation applicable to a range of contexts.

A number of Afrimat KZN employees attended ABET courses (various levels) and were awarded with their certificates. The employees thoroughly enjoyed this training and would like to enrol in more courses.

After consultation with the DMR Free State Region, Afrimat approached Maluti FET College to identify eight students who are either coming from needy families or are orphans who live in the Harrismith and Qwa Qwa areas and who cannot afford to pay their tuition fees.

As a result bursaries were awarded to eight students on February 2013 and the bursaries will last until they finish their studies. From the feedback we received, it seems that all the students are studying very hard. The students are:

ANGER MANAGEMENT: ANGER ISSUES AND TYPES OF ANGERAnger is a natural part of the human condition, but it isn’t always easy to handle. And when people don’t handle it well, the harm they do can be both visible and invisible.

Some people mask their anger. Others explode with rage. For still others, anger is a chronic condition, a habit of resentment that surfaces over and over again.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCEAn important aspect at work

ANGER AVOIDANCE:These people don’t like anger much. Some are afraid of their anger, or the anger of others. Too often the result is that they are walked over by others.

Anger Sneaks never let others know they are angry. Anger Sneaks can look hurt and innocent and often ask, “Why are you getting mad at me?” They gain a sense of control over their lives when they frustrate others.

This type of anger occurs when someone feels irrationally threatened by others. They have poor judgment because they confuse their own feelings with those of others. They see their own anger in the eyes and words of their friends, mates, and co-workers. This leaves them (and everyone around them) confused.

People with sudden anger are like thunderstorms on a summer day. They zoom in from nowhere, blast everything in sight, and then vanish. They say and do things they later regret, but by then it’s too late to take them back.

People who need a lot of attention or are very sensitive to criticism often develop this style of anger. Raging against others to hide shame doesn’t work very well. They usually end up attacking the people they love. They continue to be oversensitive to insults because of their poor self-image. Their anger and loss of control only makes them feel worse about themselves.

This anger is planned. People who use this anger usually know what they are doing. Their goal is to get what they want by threatening or overpowering others. This may work for a while, but this usually breaks down in the long run. People don’t like to be bullied and eventually they figure out ways to escape or get back at the bully.

Some people want or need the strong feelings that come with anger. They pick fights just to get high on anger. And, since they need intensity, their anger takes on an all-or-nothing pattern that creates more problems than it solves.

THERE ARE 10 ANGER STYLES:

SNEAKY ANGER:

PARANOID ANGER:

SUDDEN ANGER:

SHAME-BASED ANGER:

DELIBERATE ANGER:

ADDICTIVE ANGER:

Page 22: Edition 2013/03 30 September 2013

Anger can become a bad habit. Habitually angry people gain predictability. They always know what they feel. Life may be lousy but it is known, safe, and steady. However, they get trapped in their anger and it runs their lives. They can’t get close to the people they love because their anger keeps them away.

Some people think they have a right to be angry when others have broken a rule. That makes the offenders bad, evil, wicked, and sinful. They have to be scolded, maybe punished. They fail to understand people who are different from themselves. They often have rigid ways of thinking and doing things. Another problem with this anger style is crusading - attacking every problem or difference of opinion with moral anger when compromise or understanding might be better.

Hate is a hardened anger. It is a nasty anger style that happens when someone decides that at least one other person is totally evil or bad. Hate starts as anger that doesn’t get resolved. Then it becomes resentment, and then a true hatred that can go on indefinitely. Haters can’t let go or get on with life. They become bitter and frustrated and their lives become mean, small and narrow.

difficult to use well until you learn how. It is a real help though, as long as you don’t get trapped in any of the anger styles aforementioned. People who use anger well have a healthy or “normal” relationship with their anger. They think of anger in the following characteristic ways:

• Anger is a normal part of life• Anger is an accurate signal of real problems in a person’s life• Angry actions are screened carefully; you needn’t automatically get angry just because you could• Anger is expressed in moderation so there is no loss of control• The goal is to solve the problems, not just to express anger• Anger is clearly stated in ways that others can understand• Anger is temporary. It can be relinquished once an issue is resolved• When you practice good anger skills, you never need to use your anger as an excuse. You can take responsibility for what you say and do, even when you are mad.

The more you know about your personal anger style(s), the more control you will have over your life. You can learn to let go of excessive anger and resentment.

Die HOUSE OF HOPE leuse is “Restoring hope for the hopeless”.

NEWS on our previous article about this project is that we are glad to report that this project (done in conjunction with the Big Five Municipality, Afrimat KZN, Department of Agriculture and Ifihlile), is progressing well.

All the areas have been planted and fenced. All areas have been equipped with tanks on stands as well as piping and portable pumps. The Distillation Plant has been installed and awaits the first harvest. Mr Themba Duze is to be congratulated for the successful implementation and on-going monitoring of this project.

Mr. Duze has been involved from inception as LED Manager at Big Five Municipality to his current role as Manager Sustainability KZN.

Afrimat undertook to build an ablution block for the Ashburton Primary School in Pietermaritzburg. However, the sports fields had to be moved and fenced off before any building could start.

PHASE 1 of the project, which entailed levelling and fencing off of the sports field was completed in October 2012. The grassing of the field was undertaken by DHL and their partners while Afrimat supplied and erected the fence.

In addition, Panasonic came onboard and donated a photocopier machine with a full service contract to the school.

On Mandela Day, contribute 67 minutes of your time towards the global movement for good.On Mandela Day (18 July 2013), people around the world are encouraged to spend at least 67 minutes doing something positive for their communities in honour of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for social justice and a free, democratic South Africa.

MANDELA DAY DONATIONAfrimat Readymix (Cape) (Pty) Ltd.

This year, Afrimat Readymix (Cape) (Pty) Ltd. decided to assist at LOFOB (League of Friends for the Blind) for our 67 minutes.

LOFOB is an NGO based in Grassy Park, Cape Town, providing a wide range of independence development services to partially sighted and blind people.

The team decided to give the residents of LOFOB a small treat and made up cake boxes for tea time for the elderly and provided party packs for the kids.

Great appreciation was shown by the LOFOB residents. It is always rewarding to see smiling faces.

Majority of rural and previously disadvantaged schools are in desperate need of assistance from their community and local companies with regards to Education and Basic Health.AFRIMAT made a significant impact in the community by performing eye tests on learners from a local school, whose parents might not have the means to access an optometrist. With the sponsorship from AFRIMAT, optometrists performed eye screening and testing on a total of 253 learners at Skansdam Primary School. After performing the tests, three children were identified as being in need of prescription spectacles and received them free of charge. These learners were given the opportunity to improve their schoolwork, sport performance and general quality of life. By seeing a better and brighter future, they can now develop to their full potential.

We want to thank AFRIMAT for helping us make a difference!!!

Workshop Assistant at Afrimat Aggregates Eastern Cape, was chosen to represent Eastern Province Amateur Urban Team.

Afrimat wishes Danino all the best with the tournament of the Southern Region in Saldanha.

The Tournament took place from 1 to 7 Sept 2013.

I was born and bred in Rustenburg and I am the first born from a family of four. After finishing matric, I went to Pretoria to start my studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA) where I obtained my Mining Engineering Diploma.

As an ambitious, energetic and focused young guy, I started my career with Anglogold Ashanti

as a Learner with the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) (P1 and P2) student for a year. I then moved to Port Elizabeth to join the Afrimat family as an Intern Mining Engineer in September 2012. I was very happy to join the Afrimat Team because I believed that this is where my skills and abilities could be utilised and developed.

I would like to thank Afrimat Aggregates EC for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime by joining this team and being one of them, giving me a job where I love to work, like the people, can contribute and can’t wait to get to work. Afrimat is a working place that would afford me an opportunity to explore and unleash my potential in a field that I enjoy most.

Researcher Thomas Veatch says a joke becomes funny when we expect one outcome and another happens. When a joke begins, our minds are already anticipating what’s going to happen and how it’s going to end. When the joke goes in an unexpected direction, our thoughts and emotions suddenly have to switch gears.

We experience this sudden shift in direction as hilarious. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict.

Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humour lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert.

Explosive laughter is similar to what happens during an emotional hijack.

Emotional hijacking takes place in an instant and by the time it is over a lot of damagecould have been caused. Goleman calls this eruption an “amygdala hijack.” The amygdala is the centre of the brain that controls this response.

It can respond irrationally, and also destructively. “When Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield’s ear, it was a very bad business decision - it cost him $3 million. It was an amygdala hijack.”

Ways to prevent emotional hijacking are to move away from the situation, to slowly count to ten, to name the emotion you are experiencing or to think about something else.

EMOTIONAL HIJACK

Only by being aware of our emotional state and our reactions to stress in our lives can we hope to manage stress and maintain good health.

A high level of emotional intelligence directly correlates to a positive attitude and happier outlook on life.

Understanding the needs, feelings, and responses of those we care about leads to stronger and more fulfilling relationships.

When we can discern people’s emotions and empathise with their perspective, it’s mucheasier to resolve conflicts or possibly avoid them before they start.

WHY IS EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCEIMPORTANT?PHYSICAL HEALTH

Page 36: Edition 2013/03 30 September 2013

34.

Higher emotional intelligence helps us to be stronger internal motivators, which can reduce procrastination, increase self-confidence, and improve our ability to focus on a goal.

The ability to understand what motivates others, relate in a positive manner, and to build stronger bonds with others in the workplace inevitably makes those with higher emotional intelligence better leaders.

SUCCESS

LEADERSHIP

The concept of emotional intelligence has become a very hot topic of psychological research in recent years, especially in regards to how it affects today’s workforce.

Businesses are essentially people, so anything that impacts the effectiveness of people’s minds also impacts the businesses they run or work for. In fact, many experts now believe that a person’s emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) may be more important than their IQ and is certainly a better predictor of success, quality of relationships, and overall happiness.

“More Oom Jorrie en Dawie,

GroeteLen Douglas”
