Second Meeting of the Indian Ocean Strategic Partnerships to Reduce Emissions (INSPIRE) – Percy Morokane,External Communications Officer

Edition 16 Friday, 2nd December 2011

As I sat down to put together this month’s edition of Orbit, I could not help but reflect over the last few weeks andthe things that make a team successful. I have witnessed some amazing teamwork over the last few days.

I have seen ATNS’ers pull together, embrace change and make a conscious decision to be part of the solution.

As we approach the end of 2011 – I would invite you to look back and reflect on your contribution this year toyour team and I challenge each and every ATNS’er to embrace every day with zest and passion and with a spiritof gratitude – we have so much to be thankful for – sometimes we just need to take a moment to see it.

Thirty major global air traffic companies and aviation organisations representatives met inStellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa for the Second Meeting of the Indian OceanStrategic Partnerships to Reduce Emissions (INSPIRE/2). This was a three-day eventspanning form 29th November to 1st December 2011 and was opened by the CEO, PatrickDlamini.

The organisations who attended were Airport Authority of India; Air-services Australia;Emirates Airlines, Singapore Airlines;Etihad Airways; Virgin Australia, QantasAirlines, Maldives Airport Company;Abu Dhabi Airport Company; Oman

Civil Aviation Affairs; Maldives Airports Company and the International AirTransport Association (IATA).

The objectives of INSPIRE is to promote recommended flight procedures, practices and services that have the potential to provide efficiencies in fueland emissions reductions across all phases of flight, from gate to gate.Rushj Lehutso, Executive: Commercial Services, who gave a sixty minutespresentation, deliberated on the Marketing and PR aspects that can beemployed by INSPIRE – to derive maximum mileage and sustainable brandexposure to the rest of the industry.

The seminar was hosted and chaired by ATNS.

This event is meant to review the results of “the green demonstration flights” undertaken during 2011 and thereafter develop awork program for 2012.

For all of you travelling over this Festive Season – drive carefully – keep safe and come back rested in 2012. For those of youstaying behind to hold the fort – thank you and see you in 2012.

Teamwork is the ability to work as a group toward a common vision, even if that vision becomes extremely blurry - unknown

There are three types of workers: those who get things done, those who watch things get done, andthose who wonder how so much got done.

Blue Chip Visit to the Aviation Training Academy – Joyce Malebo, Client Relations, ATA

On Thursday 17th November, Blue Chip Flying School visited the ATA and FAJS operations centre. The eighteen guests were a mixture of instructors and students pilots. Blue Chip Aviation is based in Pretoria, at theWonderboom Airport. The guests were given a tour of the “Rad-sim”, tower 2D and 3D simulators at the ATA. They also visited the FAJS tower andradar hall.

This was another very successful event. I would like to compliment the group: DJ (FAPP), Whitney (FAPP), Yvette (FAWB),Jaune (FAGM) and Wade (FALA) for ensuring that the event was a huge success.

It was a very busy event and once again our professional ATC’s kept the skies safe. Thank you guys and ladies. It is also theSpecial Air event’s first International event and I believe the first of many to come.

Thank you also to Jose Murta, FAJS Technical Support, for once again supporting the team.

Brits Precision World Championship Event - Riaan Olivier, Special Events Coordinator

It is almost that time when you need to make a decision regarding the percentage split between your pensionable andnon-pensionable salary.

The four options you can select from are:

• 60% pensionable, 40% non-pensionable; or

• 70% pensionable, 30% non-pensionable; or

• 80% pensionable, 20% non-pensionable; or

• 85% pensionable, 15% non-pensionable.

Please note that your disability package is based on the pensionable portion and you will only received 75% of that in the eventof disability. Deducted from that is the full medical aid contribution and your portion of the pension fund contribution. You mayfind that this will result in a significant shortfall in the event of disability. In making your selection it is important to take note that your disability and death benefits are impacted by the choice youexercise. You are encouraged to seek financial advice in this regard to ensure that you are making the correct choice.

I would sincerely like to commend Yusuf Kader for the service he has rendered to myself every time I operatewithin the Lanseria ctr. Yusuf is very accommodating and assists us (SAPS Aircraft) whenever we have a call outwithin his airspace. Our response times are quick when assisting police on the ground and results in successeson crime scenes. Mr. Kader clearly understands the sense of urgency we operate in and he contributes in fightingcrime by granting the SAPS airwing priority within the ctr.  It was a pleasure working with an Air Traffic Controllerlike Yusuf and hope to see many more. Note from the Editor – Well done Yusuf – you make us Proud!

Commendation for excellent service rendered at Lanseria International Airport – Captain Vijen Lankesar, PilotSouth African Police Service, Johannesburg Airwing

TAAM User Group conference: Singapore - Jan van Antwerp, ATM

The conference was held in October and was extremely successful.   There will be a lot of changes to the TAAM software in thenext year or so, which will enable us to simulate very closely our day to day ATC activities in TAAM.

The great news is that ATNS has won the first prize for the best presentation titled “Back Tracking:  Arrival & departure traffic”.As usual, I am responsible for creating an up stir at these conferences.  This time around, I was a bit “technologicallyconstrained” and the laptop “died” almost at the end of the presentation,  Still I managed to finish this presentations with a smileand 15 mins overtime!

The second presentation was about the possible implementation of the mix usage of Conventional, RNAV RNP/Ar at FACT.There was huge interest regarding the technical aspects of the simulation on “how did you that?”   Nothing is for free in thisworld, so I made a trade-off on “how do you measure noise footprints”.

I would like to thank Jean-mari for all her hard work on the “prize winning” presentation.  Especially the part where shegraphically explained the term “OIA – Only in Africa!!” Note from the Editor – We would all like to see the OIA Presentation!

ALIGNMENT

Alignment?? What comes to your mind when you hear the word? Having your car wheels in sync with each other, right? Forease of driving.

Think about this. The Organisational Alignment. The FAJS Cell 1 on 9 Conversation in Leadership, would like to introduce thissubject to you. It is really more about tuning in. Are you tuned in, to your departmental goals and strategies? Are those in tunewith the organisational strategy?

This came about when asking ourselves what is our dream about ATNS. ATNS is a dynamic organisation, full of passionatepeople, technologically advance and a big brother to most African States. It is not the management alone, that builds and alignsthe organisation. IT IS YOU. You are a piece of a puzzle in every corner you sit in. Your job contributes to the aligning of ourstrategies individually and collectively, to a well –oiled machine called ATNS.

Now the question is, are you going to be aligned or out of sync? Let us be aligned.
