Several numbers entered in our automated call system reported as no longer in use. If you did not receive a call and would like to be on the list, just provide our office with a phone number or numbers of your choice.
Winter parent teacher conferences are set for the evenings of Thursday January 20th, Tuesday the 26th, and Thursday the 28th. All dates are from 4:00p.m. to 8:00pm. Contact your child’s teacher if you would like a conference and have not yet scheduled one.
Staff from the Junior High will meet with sixth grade students on Tuesday the 26th to begin orientation to scheduling classes and other information about transition to seventh grade. On Wednesday the 27th, parents
of sixth graders are invited to attend a session with Junior High staff - in the BES cafeteria beginning at 7:30p.m.
Plan to be entertained at the annual BES talent show on Friday January 29th! It’s always an amazing show of student talents over a variety of performances. Additional details in this newsletter edition!
Keep an eye out for information on a BES food drive during the second week of February. Each year in cooperation with the PTO we plan for and engage students in a community service and outreach event. This year’s service will benefit the Miami Ministries Food Pantry and will directly impact local Milford families.
Finally, Boyd E. Smith's 9th Annual Science Night is scheduled for Tuesday February 23rd. We are currently looking for volunteers to assist with setting up the event and cleaning afterwards. If you have time to volunteer, please click on the Sign up Genius for the event on the BES Facebook page.

Do you take pictures at our
great school events?
BES Yearbook needs your help!
Wanted: Event PicturesDid you attend any of this year's fun celebrations, like a Thanksgiving program, Veteran's Day recognition, Winter Parties, or any other school/classroom events? If you took any pictures you would like to share for consideration into our yearbook, we would love to see them! Please send your high-resolution pictures (indicating which event these were taken at) to [email protected].
We're currently looking for science or technology experts/enthusiasts
to share their knowledge with the BES students and their families at this
fabulous event. We've got some great exhibits lined up already, but we're
always looking to expand the range of our exhibits. If you or someone you
know (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, etc.) have some
knowledge to share, we'd love their participation! Think outside of the box --
if uncle Paul is an HVAC expert. he could talk to students about
geothermal...if aunt Sue is a doctor or a dentist, she could talk to the
students about keeping their bodies or teeth healthy...many people have
talents/expertise that would fascinate the kids. If you or someone you know
would be interested in having a booth at the event, please contact Nicole
Kimble at [email protected] for details.

District News
State Releases Report Card; Milford Continues to Achieve at High LevelsThe Ohio Department of Education is releasing the 2014-15 district and building report cards in two releases. The first release on January 14 includes the K-3 literacy component; graduation rate; and prepared for success measure, which grades districts on how students fare with college admission tests. The state will release the remaining components —achievement, gap closing, and progress — as well as information about gifted students and district financial expenditures on February 25.
For the state testing administered last year, the achievement of Milford School students did not drop as demonstrated by other states that had experienced these new tests. All of Milford's results exceeded the state averages, and Milford exceeded the state indicators in every area. All of our third grade students met the requirements for the third grade reading guarantee. Milford’s four year and five year graduation rate were both rated an "A" by the state of Ohio.
It was the first time that the state of Ohio used the PARCC as a testing provider; so it is difficult to compare our results to prior years, but the district is still able to learn about the achievement patterns of our students and can make adjustments in instruction in how we teach our academic standards. This school year the state of Ohio will be using AIR instead of PARCC as a provider for all state tests. Milford's curriculum is aligned to the state standards; so even though comparing one year to the next is difficult, the district can compare a student's proficiency relative to each standard.
“We are proud of our students for their achievement in the latest state testing, and we continue as a district to work together with our parents and greater Milford community in preparing our students for college and career success,” Milford Superintendent, Dr. Robert Farrell said.
A link to Milford's report card will be posted on the district website at www.milfordschools.org.

Why learn Spanish?• Starting a second language early will enhance reading abilities and general literacy in the first language.
• Students who study a foreign language for four or more years tend to score higher on t he verbal section of
the S.A.T.
• Children who learn another language demonstrate better focus and multit asking skills. Learning a second
language is excellent exercise for the brain. Some studies even suggest being actively bilingual helps
reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
• It’s the second most popular language in the world and, according to researchers, by 2050 the United
States will be t he largest Spanish speaking countr y in the world.
• By the time today’s children enter t he workforce, the ability to speak Spanish fluently will greatly improve
their resume and employability. Recruiters and hiring managers already understand that the need for
bilingual English and Spanish-speaking employees has grown; within a decade, demand for workers who
speak both languages is likely to increase even further.
• Foreign language classes are a very stringent requirement for colleges and universities; learning Spanish
during childhood will make high school Spanish classes much easier. Good grades in high school Spanish
are likely to make quite a difference on college applications.
