COLLEGE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
A very warm welcome back to all our Learning Community for what I know will be another challenging year in our endeavour to achieve the best possible outcomes for all students at the College. If past success is one of the strongest indicators of future success, then we are in for another successful year! Those of you who were able to attend the end of the year Awards Night would be aware of the outstanding performance of our year 7-12 students. It was particularly pleasing to acknowledge all of the year 12 students.
2015 College Dux was awarded to Hydes Catallo with an ATAR score of 90.8. Overall 98% of all 2015 graduates have a tertiary placement and a pathway they and their families can be proud of. Congratulations and thank you to all staff who have supported their education and success thus far.
Our staff in partnership with families are continuing to meet and plan to further implement programs that engage and challenge all learners. Our focus in learning this year is particularly on further development of independent learning; stronger homework practices; feedback and assessments that will provide clear goals for learning, intervention and extension for all learners. Our Teaching and Learning coaches will be working to develop expertise in the above and build the capacity of all staff in teaching and learning practices. A continued focus on School Wide Positive Behaviour Support will continue to align all our learning community with productive learning behaviours that will ensure social, emotional and academic growth for all students whilst at the same time strengthening the cohesiveness of our learning community.
PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER CONVERSATIONS Our first Parent/Student/Teacher Conversations for all students will be on Tuesday 16th February, 12pm to 7pm.
I look forward to your support and the successes of our Learning Community over 2016. We do need all our parents and guardians to support their son/daughter’s learning by attending the various parent/guardian (Campus based) information evenings and parent/student/teacher conversations planned for Years 7-12. These are important meetings to plan how we all can support each other to ensure our educational programs are challenging and successful over 2016. The first of this was held on 3rd February at Town Park by the Year 12 Team. It was well attended by both students and parents – an excellent way to ensure that students feel supported to meet the challenges ahead with parents and teachers working together.
COLLEGE COUNCIL ELECTIONS – MARCH 2016 Our College Council and those at other government schools in Victoria perform a very important role. They bring together parents, College staff and the broader community in planning and decision making, and provide genuine opportunities to contribute to the educational vision of the College.
There are 3 possible categories of membership:
A mandated elected parent category. Department of Education & Training (DET) employees can now be parent members at their school.
A mandated elected DET employee category. The Principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
An optional community member category. Its members are co-opted by the decision of the College Council because of their special skills, interests and/or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be in the community member category.
The term of office for members is usually two years. Normally, half the members retire each year and this creates vacancies for the annual School Council elections. There are 6 Council positions vacant for 2016, 4 parent members and 2 DET employee members.
Nominations must be in writing and on the official nomination form. If you are interested in standing for election to College Council, then please nominate. Nomination forms are available from the Campus Reception at all 3 Campuses or on the College website: www.humecentralsc.vic.edu.au
Edition 1 February 2016
Two Years of Learning in one for all our Students in 2016 COLLEGE VISION
Our College Vision is to develop and encourage in our students a love of lifelong learning while equipping them with the skills, qualifications and personal
attributes they need for a purposeful and fulfilling life beyond school.
2
Nominations close for parent members (4 vacancies) and DET members (2 vacancies) on Friday 19th February 2016 at 4pm and completed nomination forms need to be returned to Town Park, Blair Street or Dimboola Road Receptions. If there are more nominations than positions available, an election will be conducted: on the 26th February 2016, ballot papers and candidates’ statements will be available at Reception on each Campus for parents, and students can pick them up on their behalf. It is a secret ballot and voters are asked to return their ballot papers in sealed, unmarked envelopes to the Campus Receptions.
You may lodge your ballot in person between 8am and 4pm from 29th February to 4th March 2016 or post the envelope to the College Principal to arrive before the close of ballot, 4pm Friday 4th March. The declaration of the poll will be on Tuesday 8th March 2016. If I can assist please do not hesitate to contact me on 9066 3600.
ACCIDENT INSURANCE I wish to remind Parents/Guardians that the Department of Education and Training and our College does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents/Guardians are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport and ambulance costs. Student accident insurance policies are available from some commercial insurers and these cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.
PRIVATE PROPERTY Private property brought to school by students eg: mobile phones, Ipods etc. is not covered by school insurance, and that it is not the responsibility of the Department of Education and Training if that property is lost, stolen or damaged.
ATTENDANCE BY ALL STUDENTS - Key to success All our College staff will be focused again on regular school attendance this year. As we know it enables our students to maximise their full educational potential and to actively participate and engage in their learning. It is important that students maintain habits of regular attendance to maximise their educational and social development. Hume Central Secondary College requires that Year 7-12 students attend no less than 90% of the College program without a medical certificate. Students who fail to meet this requirement will jeopardise their chances of successfully completing their year of study. All of the Learning Community at Hume Central Secondary College is responsible for attendance: Teachers, Students, Educational Support Staff and Parents/Carers. As a College our focus is on providing more opportunity for all our students to successfully complete Year 12. The College has high expectations regarding the full time attendance of all our students Year 7-12 and we will seek support of the Learning Community to ensure our success in this important goal for 2016.

Dimboola Road has commenced 2016 with a strong focus on student
learning. Year 7 students have completed their On Demand testing for
both Reading and Numeracy. Students have been placed into Reading
groups and have commenced the Reading program. Year 7’s are currently
also undergoing testing for the RMIT SNMY (Scaffolding Numeracy in
Middle Years) program. Students will participate in hands on Numeracy
learning every Friday. They will be working with their collaborative groups
to improve their multiplicative skills as well as their understanding of real
life Numeracy applications.
Year 8 and year 9 students have commenced 2016 with a strong focus on
‘growth’. Each student has set and recorded their academic learning goals
in their student diary. They will be able to track their CAT data, attendance
and overall learning in their student diary.
Homework is a big initiative this year. Each learning space has developed a communication homework board. It is extremely important
that students further practice the skills learnt in class so they can achieve their goals. Teachers across the College have been developing
homework tasks that are meaningful, purposeful and achievable. Please support our HCSC students by providing them with a quiet
learning space at home to reinforce their school learning. All homework is recorded in the student diary. We also encourage parents
and carers to use the diary as a communication tool with teachers.
As can be seen from the photos, students are happily lining up and waiting to enter their learning spaces. Teachers are using various
tools and methods to check for understanding regularly in the classroom to identify strengths and improvement areas. Support in the
areas of Literacy and Numeracy is being provided by specialist teachers at least once a week for each mentor group. Homework tasks
and due dates are visible in learning spaces….and there is an overall positive vibe for learning.
Welcome to
2016!

Technology- Foods @ Dimboola 2016
Technology is about problem solving and following the four steps of the design process:
Investigating, designing, producing and evaluating
Year 7A and 7B are discovering the fun of the design process by creating a quick and healthy breakfast.
After investigating what is a smoothie they then designed different options and decided their preferred option was to produce a
healthy smoothie for breakfast.
We would also like to thank Bronwyn our kitchen Technician who purchases and prepares all ingredients to make this such a fun
learning experience.

SEW – Student Engagement & Wellbeing
Welcome to all our new students at HCSC and hello to those of you who we know so well.
As the hot weather continues it is recommended by the Anti Cancer Council that we all take care
when in the sun.
Every time you expose your skin to UV radiation, changes take place in the structure and function of
your skin cells. You can’t always see the damage, but it is irreversible and will worsen with every
exposure.
There is a HCSC cap available through Lowes which has the full school logo.
Great idea to add this to your uniform!
Well done to Mohit Shrivastav from class 7A at Dimboola Road Campus for being sun smart and
special thanks for allowing his photo to be taken.
Immunisation Program 2016
It has been a fantastic effort from our Year 7 students at both Blair Street and Dimboola Road with their immunisation cards being
returned. We achieved a card return rate of 100% success rate in both Junior Campuses in 2015 and looks like 2016 will be another
successful year.
These immunisations are for Year 7 only and are the last of the child/adolescent immunisations required. Students in other year
levels were part of the National Immunisation Catch Up program in 2015.
If you have any questions with regards to the immunisations or any other health concerns please feel free to contact your Adolescent
Health Nurses: Jacinta Lenehan @ Blair Street Campus and Alex Robinson @ Dimboola Road Campus
Jacinta and I are both available to see students at Town Park Campus by appointment.

BLAIR STREET CAMPUS Campus Principal: Kate McArthur & Assistant Principal: Nick Bakatsoulas
FRONT CARPARK AT BLAIR STREET CAMPUS The STAFF car park in Blair Street is very congested and dangerous at the start and end of the school day. The car park is for limited staff parking and for legitimate visitor parking. IT IS NOT for dropping off/picking up children from school. We ask parents to make different arrangements and drop students off/pick them up at the side of the school in Belfast Street. There
have been a number of near misses involving students and cars, and visitors to the College being unable to leave the carpark because of illegal parking blocking them in as well as staff not being able to get to meetings at our other Campuses. For the safety and wellbeing of all we ask that all parents support us and not use this car park as a pick up/drop off area.

Celebrating the Cultural Diversity at Blair Street
Students from 7D, Blair Street Campus - Photo by Wayne Wilson-Wong
Students at Blair Street Campus recently installed an exterior bench seat that they made in their Design Technology woodwork class. The seat displays a unique design feature that celebrates the cultural diversity of the students at Hume Central Secondary College. The word ‘Respect’ is stencilled in English and Arabic because it hopes to inspire peace, understanding and tolerance.
The Arabic writing is symbolic of one of the largest ethnic demographics in Broadmeadows, people with a Middle Eastern connection. The English writing represents the student’s place of learning, Melbourne Australia. Respect is also a key component of the ‘Matrix of Positive Behavior Expectations’ consistently taught at HCSC.
This outdoor bench seat is thoughtfully placed under the shade of a tree, a perfect spot for students to enjoy their food with their friends during lunch and recess. There are plans to build several more similar seats this year. Many students have remarked on the accomplished ‘finish and character’ that these seats bring to the schoolyard environment.
The woodwork teacher who organized and supervised the construction, Dr Wilson-Wong, said… “it was great to see the students working together to create such a positive project, cool to see students feel good about themselves and who they are through woodwork”.

2016 Year 12 Information Evening and Jacket presentation
It has been a great start to Year 12, on Wednesday 3rd of February, we had our
information and jacket presentations evening. The purpose of the evening was to
welcome Year 12 students and parents to 2016, introduce the School Captains,
Leilani Tologata and Dylan Narat and to provide an explanation of the structure,
procedures and rules of VCE and VCAL, and to suggest some strategies which the
School, from its previous experience, believes
will help make this year successful in every
sense. There was also reflections from two
former students, Jayden Gunn and Tanisha
Tognolini, of their Year 12 experiences.
The evening was well attended and enjoyed by
students, parents and staff. After the presentations parents, students and staff were able to mingle,
while enjoying a light supper provided by the College. The Year 12 students were also very excited
about being presented with their especially designed 2016 rugby jackets. We think they look great!
