Editing Scavenger Hunt Workshop Directions: Using a digital copy of your essay, go through the following steps. If you do not have the variety of “highlighting” color options, then change font color or make a color key of your own and provide it at the beginning of your track changes draft. If you do not know some of the “fancy” grammatical terms, turn to your handbook or an online version for explanation. Purpose: While GUMP (grammar, usage, mechanics and punctuation) are not major focal points of this course, it is important to know and visualize the constructions you are using (both consciously and unconsciously). Therefore, combing your own paper for a variety of grammatical constructions helps you see what you use, what you may want to incorporate, and what you understand. Find the following and highlight them: 1) 4 compound sentences (green) 2) 4 that/which statements (Yellow) 3) 4 introductory phrases (blue) 4) 6 transitions/transitional phrases (Orange) 5) 5 sentences with comma usage (they can be compound sentences/ appositive phrases, etc) (Purple) 6) 1 semi colon (Pink) 7) 1 colon (Red) Turn on Track Changes. Do the following actions 1) Take 1 compound sentence and make it two 2) Take 1 compound sentence and make it a complex compound sentence 3) take 2 simple sentences: make one compound, and one complex compound 4) Remove 3 obvious transitions (however, on the other hand, therefore...) and create new transitions for those three sentences 5) Rework a sentence to house a colon (even if you did already use one) 6) Find and edit a sentence that could effectively use parentheses; insert them 7) divide one large paragraph into two Before adding any construction you are unsure of, find explanations of them in your book or online. Post the track changes draft in your research journal for this week. If you have already posted it, simply add the attachment when it is completed (by Friday when journals are due) Molly E. Using track changes allows you to see what was there AND what you altered.
