EDITING PROCESSBY KATERINA KOCI
TRAILER
I started with importing all
the clips I shot into Final Cut. I organised the
clips in the order I would
like them to be viewed and
roughly cut out scenes I didn’t like or want in
the trailer.
When all the clips were added, cut and in the correct order, the rough cut was over five minutes long. This meant I had to further reduce the number of scenes. This was especially hard because I
had to remove shots that I was particularly proud of, however they weren’t necessary to understand the trailer.
I managed to reduce the rough cut to just over three minutes, which meant I was going to need further reductions. First I added basic transitions such as fade in/out or cross dissolve to see how long will the trailer be after adding those. Then I removed the rest of the unnecessary scenes to fit in the
required time (2:30).
Next step was adjusting the colours. Some of the scenes were shot in the dark and I needed to make sure there is a good balance of black and white. Moreover I had to decrease saturation as the actors’
faces were orange due to the lack of light.
Using the Color Corrector I also adjusted the colours in other scenes to create the desired atmosphere or correct issues with light and brightness.
MAGAZINE COVER
I used Adobe Illustrator to edit both the film poster and magazine cover. After adjusting the colour balance of the photo making it warmer and the light softer (using Photoshop) I started
with the heading. I found a font that was most similar to the one used for Total Film’s heading.
I widened the borders of the letters to make
them as close to each other as possible while
still legible, which made the font
even more similar to the original Total
Film.
I typed up all the other headings, cover lines and tag line and played with the colours, opacity and positioning. I aimed for relatively minimalistic looking cover with the photo being the center
piece, grabbing buyers’ attention.
In the section ‘borders’ I found different types of brush-like borders which I decided to use on the sticker.
Next step was the large + sign. I applied thick border and colourful filter on it to make the cover look more interesting, fun and appealing to the consumers. I positioned it in line with the text
and incoroporated other cover lines to fit the plus.
Last step was to insert the bar code. I copied this from existing Total Film’s cover I found in Google Images. I rotated it horizontally and adjusted size to make it fit to my cover.
Unfortunately the rest of the screenshots from my editing process have been lost due to hard drive issues. Bellow I will briefly describe what were the next steps I took to create the final
product.
Sound• Imported the recorded voiceover• Increased the volume level
The voiceover had been recorded while watching the edited video, therefore there were no issues with timing.
• Imported the songs I chose for the soundtrack
• Cut out the parts I didn’t need• Created transition between first and
second song by adjusting volume levels• Joint parts of the songs back together• Lowered the volume of the track when
voiceover was on to have the music in the background
• Faded the sound out at the end of the trailer by lowering the volume gradually
Credits• Used Motion to create the opening screen
and end credits• After adding behaviour to the text and timing
it I exported the clips to Final Cut• Added fade in/out transition
Poster• Used the same picture as for magazine cover
and also edited in Illustrator• Took a screenshot of the Black Cat production
logo I created in Motion, inverted colours and added to the picture
• Tested different fonts and sizes• Adjusted transparency of the text to soften it • Found the star symbol, adjusted its size and
inserted multiple times• Exported the project to .jpg format
