It’s a clanky little five-string instrument with a bluegrass history that was all but extinct in mainstream country music. But as Rascal Flatts’ “Banjo” enters the top five on Hot Country Songs, it’s clear that the banjo is once again relevant to contemporary country sound.

Ilya Toshinsky has the distinct privilege of playing banjo on “Banjo,” though he’s hardly the only guy working it in Nashville studios. Producer Nathan Chapman plucked one on Taylor Swift’s Grammy Award-winning “Mean,” Jonathan Yudkinhandles it on Big & Rich’s “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy),” and Keith Urban plays the banjo—or, to be precise, a six-string Deer-ing ganjo—on a bundle of songs that get heavy recurrent attention on country radio. In fact, Urban’s “Somebody Like You,” which cel-ebrates its 10th anniversary this summer, was a significant factor in the banjo’s return to prominence.

“He has an extremely unique take on it,” says Urban’s co-producer Dann Huff, who is also one of Nashville’s most accomplished gui-tarists. “He has a way of attacking it. His is a real reckless banjo playing, and it stems from his style as a guitar player. When I play a ganjo, I just do it as a utility—there’s nobody there, and I need that sound. He makes it an extension of the guitar.”

The ascent of Rascal Flatts’ “Banjo”—also co-produced by Huff—was uniquely timed. The song was in country’s top 10 when banjo legend Earl Scruggs died March 28, and Steve Martin—an affirmed Scruggs devotee—was already booked to play banjo with Flatts when the band performed the song on the Academy of Coun-try Music Awards on April 1, the same day as Scruggs’ funeral in Nashville.

It was Scruggs, in fact, who inspired Toshinsky’s dogged pur-suit of the banjo.

“His touch, the sound, the feel, his rhythm, his overall musi-cality is I think what really attracted me,” Toshinsky says. “I was 10 years old. I was growing up in Russia. I didn’t know anything about banjo or bluegrass, but what I heard was so compelling. He was like a little revolution inside my head that’s really kind of de-fined my life in a way.”

banjo’s Appalachian associations were a bit out of place: on Toshinsky in the So-viet Union; on Béla Fleck in Queens, New York; and on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s John McEuen in Southern California.

Scruggs employed a three-finger roll to build a wall of sound that compensated for the instrument’s unique sound. A banjo note makes an intense initial impact, but has little “sustain” (as it’s called) and quickly trails off. Scruggs’ powerful use of that choppy characteristic was the final piece in building Bill Monroe’s vision for bluegrass.

The instrument became so identified with that genre, however, that it fell out of favor in mainstream country, particularly as the Nashville Sound of the 1960s

ushered in decades of Music Row bending the music to appeal to the general audience. The banjo’s rural connota-tion—the same trait that feeds the lyrics in “Banjo”—was used in conjunction with extreme media portrayals. It was central to the musical themes of “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “Hee Haw,” which lampooned country life, and to the soundtracks of “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Deliverance,” both remembered for dark, violent scenes.

Scruggs, Roy Clark, John Hartford and session player Bobby Thompson (Jerry Reed’s “East Bound and Down”) may have been astute musicians in that era, but their vehicle of choice was increasingly shunted into

the bluegrass ghetto, a fact that astonished Toshinsky when he arrived in the United States in the 1990s with the now-defunct Bering Strait.

“It kind of freaked me out,” Toshinsky says. “I had to reshape my focus, and I picked up the electric guitar and really started working on that.”

In fact, Toshinsky estimates that 80% of his session work is still on guitar, though he’s watched the banjo regain favor. Emily Robison gave it a bit of cool when the Dixie Chicks took off in the late ’90s, and Mark Casstevens’ 1997 banjo work on Tim McGraw’s “Just to See You Smile” brought additional traction.

Urban’s “Somebody Like You” took it even farther, playing fewer notes than heard in its traditional format and emphasizing the space between those notes when the sound quickly decayed.

“It’s hit pretty hard nowadays,” McGraw’s co-producer Byron Gallimore ob-serves. “There are songs that the banjo kind of works in, and it makes it kind of perk and makes the track feel good.”

Huff views it as country’s version of the sequencer, a device that creates and loops exacting electronic rhythms in pop music.

“The banjo is the perfect instrument for that,” he explains. “It really drives a lot of country music because it’s so percussive and it speaks better than a guitar or mandolin as far as that percussive element.”

Still, Huff ironically resisted a banjo solo on “Banjo,” and he only turned Toshin-sky loose on it after Big Machine Label Group president/CEO Scott Borchettainsisted it would be a glaring omission. Toshinsky combined Fleck’s progressive influence with Scruggs’ traditional bluegrass approach in fitting the clunky five-string alongside the song’s arena-rock guitars. The result is a happy, energetic,

radio-friendly hit, and Huff predicts it will open the door to a rash of banjo solos in the not-too-distant future before the instrument starts to lose favor again. For now, it’s oddly hip to play it.

“It makes you feel an urgency,” Huff assesses. “There’s something about the sound of it that [you associate with] the hills or the mountains. Because of the way the thing sounds, you can put it with the heavy electric instruments and it still re-tains its voice.”

THOMPSON SQUARE JOINS BILLBOARD SUMMITWhen Thompson Square performed “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not” with a backing band that featured Vince Gill and Keith Urban during an April 10 fund-raiser for the Country Music Hall of Fame, it added another dimension to a song that changed a number of lives.

Certified platinum by the RIAA, the title served as the breakthrough for the Academy of Country Music’s newly minted vocal duo of the year, the first No. 1 for Broken Bow’s Stoney Creek imprint and the first hit single for the NV production team, a four-man unit that includes three members of Jason Aldean’s band.

Thompson Square and several key people associated with “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not” will explore the hurdles and triumphs in its path during “Makin’ Tracks: The Journey of a Song,” a day-two panel at the Billboard Country Music Summit, to be held June 4-5. Keifer and Shawna Thompson will be joined by songwriters Jim Collins and David Lee Murphy, Broken Bow new media specialist Lynette Garbonola and NV’s Tully Kennedy to recount some of the key decisions in its evolution and how it impacted them.

Co-sponsored by the Country Music Assn., the third annual Billboard Country Music Summit will explore multiple facets of the business, including radio, tour-ing, publishing and digital technologies. Luke Bryan and Willie Nelson were the first artists confirmed for the convention. Previous keynote guests and panel-ists have included Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, Aldean, Tim McGraw and Martina McBride. Additional panelists will be an-nounced in the coming weeks.

GOOD WORKSWhen Keith Urban and Vince Gill or-ganized their third annual All for the Hall benefit concert, the point was to raise a lot of money for the Country Music Hall of Fame, and to do so by entertaining an estimated 16,000 people.

They succeeded on both counts on April 10 with a sold-out show that raised $465,000 for the cause and supplied a truckload of highlights.

After delivering short sets of their own, Urban and Gill joined the backup band and supported a parade of guests that in-cluded Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebel-lum, Alabama, Pistol Annies, the Band Perry and Oak Ridge Boys. The announced lineup alone was a win-ner, but it reached a crescendo when Dia-mond Rio guitarist Jimmy Olandertraded licks with Gill and Urban at the end of a blistering, extended version of “Meet

in the Middle.”Then there were the surprises. Hall of Fame members Don Williams and

Merle Haggard made unannounced appearances, and Urban was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry, an offer he gladly accepted.

ON THE CHARTS

BLAKE SHELTON INKS SIXTH STRAIGHT AUDIENCE LEADER; RASCAL FLATTS NETS SEVENTH COUNTRY CHART RULERAs “Drink on It” (Warner Bros/WMN) advances 2-1, Blake Shelton achieves his sixth straight leader—his 11th overall—on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs, where he takes sole possession of second place among all artists with active No. 1 streaks. Zac Brown Band tops that tally with seven consecutive No. 1 songs, while Chris Young moves to third place with five straight chart-toppers. Shelton hasn’t had an official radio single peak outside the top 10 since De-cember 2007, when “The More I Drink” stopped at No. 19.

The new No. 1 is the third straight chart-topper from Shel-ton’s Red River Blue album, preceded by “God Gave Me You,” which spent three weeks at the summit last fall, and “Honey Bee,” which led for five weeks in June/July 2010. In its 11th week on Billboard’s Country Digital Songs, “Drink on It” moves 47,000 downloads and bullets at No. 11, while Red River Blue sells 13,000 copies in its 39th week on Billboard’s Top Country Albums (No. 10). As a reminder, all Billboard retail charts become official when they update on Thursday mornings on Billboard.biz.

Speaking of Zac Brown Band, the group’s “No Hurry” (Southern Ground/Atlantic/Bigger Picture) freshens up the top 10 on Hot Country Songs, where it jumps 11-9 in its 13th chart week. It sells 13,000 downloads in its fourth week on Country Digital Songs, where it ranks at No. 43.

Kenny Chesney & Tim McGraw’s “Feel Like a Rock Star” (BNA) snares the highest debut on Country Digital Songs, where it pops on at No. 3 with 93,000 downloads. As anticipated follow-ing its historic No. 13 bow last week on Hot Country Songs, the song experi-

Nearly all the acts returned at the end for a raucous take on “I Saw Her Standing There.” Yes, that was Haggard and Williams singing along on a Beatles song with the Oaks, Lady A and Little Big Town.

Making a further commitment to raising money for the Hall of Fame, Urban promised in a post-show press release to “see you again next year.”

ASK “MINDY”Advice for life from a Music Row receptionist now in her 35th year of taking care of the business.

Dear Mindy: I notice I hear a banjo on many records out of Nashville lately. What is the story there?

Ted, Berea, Ky.

Dear Ted: Good ears, Teddy Boy! Yes, you hear a banjo. As you probably know the banjo was invented in the 14th century by Johann Banjovi as an instrument of torture. Many still think of it that way. Quite often I expect a truck to pull up to the studio and men in Hazmat suits will enter and remove all the banjos and steel guitars from Nashville.

There is a famous joke on Music Row: What do you never hear anyone say? “Is that the banjo player’s Porsche parked out front?”

Today they often add a banjo to keep it country. Even if the track is screaming death metal, the gentle pluck of a banjo added to the track makes it safe for country radio. I actually enjoy the sound of a banjo playing along. And always remember the good advice my Uncle Buford used to say when we’d be out fishing: “Paddle faster: I hear banjo music!”

ences a 7% second-week audience adjustment (down 1.5 million impressions), but maintains its No. 13 rank. High atop the digital list, Eric Church scores his first leader (4-1) and biggest digital sales week with “Springsteen” (EMI Nashville), which sells 102,000 downloads (up 39%). His second-best digital week was 71,000 downloads with “Springsteen” the prior week. Church’s previ-ous best rank was notched when “Drink in My Hand” stopped at No. 6 last December.

With 130,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Rascal Flatts’ Changed (Big Machine) debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums. Its seventh chart-topper gives the trio the distinction of having the most No. 1s among duos or groups in

the 21-year Nielsen SoundScan era (Brooks & Dunn is sec-ond, with six leaders) and pads its lead as the group with the most top starts during that time frame. (Lady Antebellum is second, with three No. 1 debuts.) Changed also opens at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, marking Rascal Flatts’ eighth top 10 on the big chart. Two years ago, the trio’s prior album Nothing Like Thisbowed at No. 1 on the country chart with 165,000 copies sold. “Banjo,” the lead single from Changed, steps 6-5 in its 14th week on Hot Country Songs and is No. 15 on Country Digital Songs (35,000 downloads).

Keith Urban claims double Hot Shot Debut honors, as “For You” opens at No. 40 on the Billboard Country Indicator chart and at No. 47 on Hot Country Songs. The song appears on the soundtrack to “An Act of Valor”(Relativity), and is being worked to radio by Capitol Nash-

ville. With 26 reports from national formats/secondary markets outlets, “For You” wears the Most Added crown on the Country Indicator list.

David Guetta scores his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Nielsen BDS-

based Mainstream Top 40 chart, as “Without You,” featuring

Usher, rises 2-1. The song marks the French DJ/producer/

songwriter’s first leader on the list. He had previously peaked

as high as No. 3 with “Sexy Chick,” featuring Akon, last year.

Guest Usher notches his second No. 1 after reigning for

three weeks with “Yeah!,” featur-

ing Lil Jon and Ludacris, in 2004.

He’d stopped just one spot short of

the summit six times since then,

most recently with “DJ Got Us Fal-

Also making news is Bruno

Mars, who rises 12-9 with “It Will

(which debuted on last week’s Bill-

A new era appears to have

dawned at Clear Channel Radio.

During the last month the

company has shown a renewed

focus on f lexing the muscle

that comes with owning 850

radio stations across the coun-

try, most recently in the form

of a nationwide premiere of

“You Da One,” the second sin-

gle from Rihanna’s Island Def

Jam release, Talk That Talk.

The company coordinated

a deal with management and

the label to showcase the song

on the 100-plus mainstream

and rhythmic top 40 stations

in Clear Channel’s portfolio be-

fore it was available to listeners

on any other terrestrial station

or digital platform.

“We want people to start to look at Clear Channel as both a great

collection of individual stations and a network that works cohesively

and can truly reach 241 million consumers,” Clear Channel president

of national programming platforms Tom Poleman says.

A BUsy MoNTH

Clear Channel’s new focus on its national capabilities started at

the end of October with what the company labeled a “reduction

in force,” which included layoffs of programmers and talent at sta-

tions in many of the company’s

smaller markets.

According to a company

representative, the move was

positioned as an effort to take

better advantage of “assets and

resources in those markets that

their competitors don’t have.”

In most cases, those assets

are what the company calls its

“Premium Choice” content:

format-specific programming

syndicated to stations on a re-

gional and national basis like

“On Air With Ryan Seacrest,”

which is heard on a number of

Clear Channel top 40 stations.

Immediately following the

reduction in force came the an-

nouncement of a new national

programming platforms team

headed by Poleman, who says the division will “enable us to be even

more relevant and effective for our audiences, partners and adver-

tisers, and build our national scale and reach by putting together

products, events and relationships that nobody else can.”

Then, just a few weeks later, came the first example: the national

premiere of a new song from a major artist.

Power with Rihanna Premiere

Clear Channel recently world-premiered “you Da one,”

the second single from Rihanna’s Island Def Jam

release Talk That Talk, across its 100-plus mainstream

and rhythmic top 40 radio stations.

BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE APRIL 16, 2012 | PAGE 15 OF 17

CHART LEGENDRANKINGSHot Country Songs is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 131 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2012, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 89 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Hot Country Songs to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format.

Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Hot Country Songs, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Hot Country Songs, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are

not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks.
