Welcome to the 2020 Edible Garden Catalogue.

Wow, what a start to the year we are having. Likemany, at times I was not sure how to react to theworld wide pandemic or Rahui. There have beentears, feelings of isolation and real worry for mychildren and what the future holds for them. There have also been moments of joy as I havehad a chance to reacquaint myself with myown vegetable garden, feel resilient inthe lifestyle that we as a family havecreated for ourselves and live by everyday. The chance to relax with mychildren and play. We have made aping pong table out of an oldblackboard and my trestle table, pattertennis bats and a soft squishy ball (soin fact nothing like ping pong, but youget the idea.). The rules have been loose andthe cheating and arguments outweighed bythe battles, rallies, laughter and exercise. Wehave made a magic carpet ride(constructed by the children) andtowed behind the car, we wereexhausted by the laughter that simpleplay brought us. We have startedtraditions of a nightly walk around ourgullies, accompanied by the dogs, cat, horseand any of the other members of themenagerie that followed. Life is good whenwe appreciate what we have.

I have been humbled by the support somany of you have shown myself, my familyand the nursery. It has been heartwarmingthat so many of you have been so busy inyour gardens and emailing, phoning etc to placeorders. I really am grateful for your continuedsupport and am working hard to catch up withdispatches, making new cuttings, sowing seed, finishing budding and thinking about thegrafting, watering and always, always theweeding.

Life was complicated for us right from the get gothis year as my beautiful 18 year old (yikes thatmakes Edible Garden 18 as well, yes and me mucholder!) Holly has beendiagnosed with a veryrare syndrome MALSor Median arcuateligament syndrome, sorare that it seems wecannot find anyone inNZ with thissyndrome. It took all of2019 to diagnose andmake a plan forsurgery in January of

this year. We had our hopes pinned on the surgerybeing a success but alas we have hit majorcomplications during lockdown and Holly hasbeen admitted to hospital having lost a significantamount of weight during level 4 (maybe the onlyone to do so!). The nature of this illness has reallytaken its toll and we do struggle to find theanswers needed.

So, ‘patience’ may be the word for us as afamily and you as my valued customers thisseason. I am one person answering the

tonne of emails, phone calls, dispatchesetc plus nursery work. Don’t get mewrong I love it all and have beenhumbled that I can survive inbusiness during these times. Passionis what gets me up every morning andhow lucky am I to feel that butpatience will get us though these very

busy times in the nursery and also inHolly’s journey. My boys are thriving: Tom 16,

Charlie 12 and Fergus so nearly 10, they love theoutdoors, soccer, animals and all the joy thatliving here affords them. They do dearly miss

their friends and yearn for the daythat school reopens (who wouldhave every thought that). Maybethis is compounded by the fact thatMum is the nominated school

teacher, and it’s a job I didn’t trainfor which brings very mixed results!

Let’s not forget what this time in Rahui hasafforded us and what we as individuals hold

dear. This time has given many the chance tobreathe, enjoy a slower, simpler life and becontent with less. Let’s hold onto those simplejoys, connect with each other and nature more.Mine is continued resilience as a family to lookafter ourselves via the garden and orchard, playing more, health, kindness to the earth andour fellow humans.

Enjoy your Edible Gardens and thank you foryour continued support.

Espalier“The art of training fruit trees to branch in formalpatterns normally along a wall, trellis or a wire bytying and pruning so that they grow on flat planes.Decorative, space saving and productive.”

We have run Espalier workshops for many years andthey are always popular and well attended. The art ofEspalier is gaining popularity as gardens becomesmaller or we just wish to fit more varieties into ourgardens using up walls and fences that wouldotherwise remain under utilised. How exciting -all the initial hard work has been mastered for you.You will appreciate the these trees are super-delicateso they can’t be couriered and must be collected fromthe nursery, thank you.
