he University of Evansville soccer program came a longway in 2006, a direct result of Mike Jacobs taking over

the leadership of the program as head coach. The Purple Aces produced the nation’s most improved

t the University of Evansville, the athletic training staff ispro-active, making sure that each student-athlete is in the

best physical condition possible before competition begins. HeadTrainer Terry Collins works directly with the men’s soccer players, assisted by student trainer Kasey Wahl.“TC and his athletic training staff are a key component in ourprogram’s success,” says Head Coach Mike Jacobs. “He does agreat job in helping our players stay healthy, as well as in theirrecovery when they are injured.”A large portion of the job for Collins and his staff of certified

trainers and student trainers involves preventing injuries from everoccurring. That’s accomplished through educating athletes, pro-viding pre-season physical examinations, and proper nutrition andconditioning. When injuries do occur, UE’s trainers work closelywith Team Physician Dr. Andrew Saltzman and physical therapyprofessionals from ProRehab, PC to rehabilitate the athletes andget them back into playing shape. Care is taken to make sure thatall injuries are completely healed before athletes are allowed tocompete again.“Our responsibilities are to prevent, assess, and rehabilitate

injuries, as well as providing acute and follow-up care to athletes,”says Collins. “We have several local medical providers inEvansville who assist the training staff, also. It’s gratifying for usto help the athletes get the most out of their potential by keepingthem fit and ready to compete.”

He is also aCertified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)."Brady has done a tremendous job in getting our playersenthusiastic about working out in the weight room," accordingto Head Coach Mike Jacobs, “and the strides we have made asa team in that area are a big reason for our improvement onthe field as well.”Adds Holt, “The two main goals of the strength program hereat UE are injury prevention and the development of athleti-cism. This is accomplished with balanced training programsthat emphasize movements instead of training body parts.Additional emphasis is placed on technique, which involvesexecuting each movement in the most mechanically efficientway. With efficient movement and good technique, the likeli-hood of injury is greatly reduced and performance is dramat-ically enhanced.”

eading into his first season as the man in charge at the University of Evansville, in2006, Head Coach Mike Jacobs stated: “We’re here to rebuild the culture and tra-

dition of Aces Soccer. We have three stages in building the program. The first is toplay competitively on a consistent basis. The second is to win consistently, and thethird is to win championships consistently.”It didn’t take Coach Jacobs and his Purple Aces long to achieve the first goal. TheAces’ 7-3 non-conference record was their best since 1996, their fifth place finish in theMissouri Valley Conference was their best since 1999, and the result of UE’s competi-tive play on a consistent basis was the most improved record in the nation at 9-8-0. Part II of Coach Jacobs' building project is to win consistently, and that’s the goal forthe Aces beginning in 2007. “Winning is habitual,” said Jacobs. “This past season was an encouraging step in build-ing a foundation of success, and our challenge now is to take the next step in expecting tobe successful. You do that by placing a priority in working hard on both sides of the balland buying into the idea of being a part of something bigger than themselves. This 2007team has the potential to have those characteristics.” They have a strong nucleus to get it done, beginning with 14 players who saw action

in 2006. The Aces’ high-powered offense is led by a returning core that was among thenation’s top 30 in scoring in 2006. Heading that group is senior midfielder/forwardCoryElenio,whoearnedNSCAAAll-MidwestRegionhonors last fall after finishing second in the Missouri Valley Conference in points (20)and goals scored (8). Another key attacking threat is senior midfielder Dustin Awe,who led the Missouri Valley Conference and finished 10th nationally in assists withnine. Beshears, expect to make contributions to the Aces’ attack. The midfield also has a solid returning unit led by Awe and sophomore Reggie

Edu. Edu started all 17 matches last season, and is being counted on as a play-maker in the middle of the field. Incoming freshman Robby Lynch, the 2006Gatorade Indiana State Player of the Year and NSCAA High School All-American, is also expected to be a key contributor in the midfield. Dan Gibson,Sam Bornstein, Tyler Hoek and Ben Harner all gave the Aces excellent depthin the middle of the pitch last season. Moll and Minyono will also be looked at tocontribute in the midfield.Kieran Purcell returns to lead the team’s defense after starting all 17 matches

as a freshman. In fact, Purcell won the Aces’ Ironman Award for playing the mostminutes on the squad. The experience that Purcell gained representing his nativeNew Zealand in this summer’s Under-20 World Championships will prove valu-able for the Aces. Senior Erik Johnson and Bornstein will compete for playingtime in the back after solid performances this past spring, and both have the versa-tility to help the team in the midfield. A lot will be expected of junior KippErskine, who transferred from Hartwick College in January. Erskine is a leaderwho brings valuable collegiate experience to the center back role. NewcomersAlly Mackay, Austin Eanes, Mitch Mansfield and Austin Schall are also very

capable of con-tributing.The last line of

defense has plentyof experience ingoalkeepers AlecDufty and CoreySouthers. Dufty

earned the co-Most Valuable Defender award last season as a sophomore and wasselected to the All-Missouri Valley Conference team. Dufty was also called in bythe United States Under-20 National Team this past year. Southers played in eightmatches last season with four starts, and brings nearly 4,000 minutes of collegiateexperience into his senior year.“A returning nucleus of players who understand our system and understand our

expectations gives us an advantage from where we were at this stage last year,”Jacobs says. “The challenge for us will be building off of last year’s momentumto continue to grow in the direction that Aces’ fans have become accustomed tothrough our great tradition and legacy. In the 11 years of Aces’ soccer leading up to 1985, no Evansville teamhad ever scored more than 57 goals. That record fell in mid-seasonin 1985, when the Aces scored an incredible 93 goals on their way toa number one national ranking, a berth in the NCAA Final Four(now termed ‘College Cup’) and a final record of 21-1-2. DanMcHugh’s 16 goals and school record 22 assists led the way. Threeplayers made the NSCAA All-American Team–McHugh, defenderMike Mikes, and midfielder Andrew Norton. UE had so much depthand talent in 1985 that none of the All-Americans earned the teamMVP award. That honor went to sophomore midfielder Mick Lyon.

Led by All-Americans Scott Cannon (defender), TreyHarrington (goalkeeper) and David Weir (forward), the 1990 Acesset two NCAA Division I records–most wins in a season (24) andmost shutouts (20). In 27 matches, the Aces allowed a grand totalof seven goals on their way to posting a record of 24-1-2.

Nation’s Best1989 National Player Of The YearFred Schmalz knew he had a great talentwhen Rob Paterson transferred in 1988 to theUniversity of Evansville from Cal-San Diego, where he led the Tritons to third place in theNCAA Division III tournament. Schmalz foundout just how good in 1988, when the Division Irookie led the Aces in scoring with 15 goals andfour assists for 34 points. That was just thestart. As a senior in 1989, Paterson led the nation ingoals scored and set the UE record that stillexists today when he scored 27 goals. His 61total points and 11 game-winning goals that sea-son are also the best in school history.Paterson’s scoring total, combined withEvansville’s 19-4 record and number sevennational ranking, led Paterson to being selectedas a first team All-American. Weir was the MCC Player of theYear, the NCAA Division I national leader ingoals scored, and a first team All-American.Weir became the first American collegiateplayer to compete for a European team in theWorld Cup when he made Scotland’s team in1997.
