Make Up Work Policy

If your child is going to be absent from school for just one or two days, it is not necessary to call school to request any missed assignments. Once your child returns to school he/she will be given fair opportunity to make up any work missed. If your child will be out for an extended period of time due to illness or family emergency (3 or more days) feel free to call school in the morning and we will have assignments gathered together for you as soon as possible. Chil-dren who are going on vacation during the school year may request an independent study pack-age for the time that they are away from school but it will be their responsibility to make up all missed work assignments when they return to school.

Helping Your Child with Math Homework

• Ask your child to bring home their math textbook/homework every night.

• Review the problems with your child.

• Review the key concepts with your child. As you work through the problems, use the math vocabulary to talk about how you are solving the problem.

• Once your child understands how to solve the problems, allow him/her to work independent-ly and provide support as needed.

• Check your child’s assignment for accuracy.

• Remember that if you discuss the questions orally, this will help you determine whether or not your child understands the concept being presented.

Check out these helpful math homework tips!!

Seasonal Reminders

As we move into the months of fall and then winter there are a few items that I wish to share as we strive to keep our school running smoothly.

• Please make certain that your child’s name is written on all personal items including coats. If your child loses an item, our Lost and Found is located in our cafeteria

• Continue to review with your child/children the plan they are to follow in the event that school closes early due to inclement weather or another emergency.

• Review the Board of Education policy concerning students taking medications at school before cold and flu season arrives.

Homework Hints

Kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework — it shows kids that what they do is important.. Of course, helping with homework shouldn't mean spending hours hunched over a desk. Parents can be supportive by demonstrating study and or-ganization skills, explaining a tricky problem, or just encouraging kids to take a break.

Here are some tips to guide the way:

1. Know the teachers — and what they're looking for. Attend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved.

2. Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to complete home-work. Keep supplies — paper, pencils, glue, scissors — within reach.

3. Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner.

4. Help them make a plan. On heavy homework nights or when there's an especially hefty assignment to tackle, encourage your child break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work schedule for the night if necessary — and take time for a 15-minute break every hour, if possible.

5. Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music, or phone calls. (Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful.)

6. Make sure kids do their own work. They won't learn if they don't think for themselves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggestions and help with directions. But it's a kid's job to do the learning.

7. Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes, and tests. Give encourage-ment, check completed homework, and make yourself available for questions and concerns.

8. Set a good example. Do your kids ever see you diligently balancing your budget or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice.

9. Praise their work and efforts. Post an aced test or art project on the refrigerator. Mention academic achievements to relatives.

REMINDER Everyone is reminded that every school in Anne Ar-undel County forbids smoking on the school grounds. We are finding a number of cigarette butts in the parking lot and near the school entrances. This ban on smoking includes evening and weekend events (i.e. recreation and parks games, PTA, scouts, etc.) You are not even to smoke in your car if it is parked on school grounds. NO SMOKING ON ANNE

ARUNDEL COUNTY SCHOOL GROUNDS

Health Room If you need to call the health room, they have a direct line. The direct number for the health room is 410-222-2970.

Parents picking up their children at the Oakwood/Elkridge crosswalk are

reminded that at all school crossings, pedestrians have the right of

way. Please pay close attention to children crossing the roads, and take

all care to allow them to cross safely. Please follow all directions of the

crossing guard. Crossing guards are employees of the Anne Arundel

County Police Department and report directly to the Police Depart-

ment. Again, please be extremely careful when driving near crosswalks

during arrival and dismissal times. When waiting for your child in your

vehicle, do not block crosswalks. Thank you for your cooperation in

keeping all students safe while they are walking to and from school.

Communicating with your School Nurse

Parent/Guardians - Keep Your School Nurse Up to Date: 1. Be sure to inform your school nurse about your child’s health conditions or other

special health needs in order to plan for safe management at school. Chronic health conditions including but not limited to: asthma, seizures, diabetes or life threatening allergies.

2. Remember to provide your school nurse with current emergency contact information. 3. Tell your school nurse if your child’s health condition interferes with school attendance. 4. Make sure to tell your school nurse about medications and medical treatments your child requires during the school day. 5. Tell your school nurse about any changes in your child’s health or mobility status, or about any infectious disease. 6. Speak to the school nurse if you need to obtain information about health insurance for your child. Any questions or health related concerns? Please contact your school nurse, Jackie Wharton RN, at 410-222-2970.

V-Soft RaptorWare

The safety of all students and staff in Anne Arundel County Public Schools is of ut-most importance to all of us. Our school is utilizing a system for checking in all visi-tors. The system is called V Soft by RaptorWare. When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present a government-issued photo ID to a staff per-son in the school office. This card will be scanned and the following information will be collected: Your photo, your name, and your date of birth. This information will be utilized to check you in, create an ID badge, and compare your information against sexual offender databases throughout the country. If your name appears on any of the lists or you refuse to allow the school to scan your ID, you will not be allowed access to the school. The only alternative will be to allow the school to see your ID, verify your first name, last name, and date of birth to be entered into the system manually. However, this method does not store the information and you must do this each time you visit the school. If you do have your ID scanned, you will only be asked to show your ID on future visits and your name will be selected from an existing list of previous visitors. You will also be asked to check out with the office upon leaving the school so that we know you are no longer in the build-ing. You will be required to check into the system even if you are only coming to school to pick up your child. The information collected will not be shared outside of the school and is kept on a secure server. Your assistance in keeping our students safe is appreciated.

Make sure that your child is in their seat and ready to learn by 8:40 AM

PTA Annual Coat Drive

As we prepare for colder temperatures, you may notice you have items that no longer fit or that you no longer need. Please consider donating those winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, snow pants, or snow boots that you no longer need. They must be in good shape and clean; free of tears, holes, and stains, and Velcro should be free of fuzz and hair.

There is a large box outside the front office at the hallway entrance where you can place these items from now until November 28th.

On November 28th, these items will be taken to our local Edgewater Busy Bee Drycleaner who has graciously agreed to dry-clean the items for free again this year!

All Edgewater parents will be invited to shop these items for FREE so that we can keep our children and their families warm this winter! The shop will be open Thursday, December 3rd from 6-9 pm . We ask that you only take what you need so that we can serve as many families as possi-ble.

Thank you for your donations and generosity!
