LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWSSupporting Students Health Needs at School

Edge Hill State School is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of students whilst under our care. This care extends to helping students to manage their health condition that require medication. We are guided by Department of Education policies and procedures that outline how routine, emergency and over-the-counter medications are to be administered to students at Queensland State schools.

The Department recognises that all medications, including over-the-counter (OTC) medications, e.g. paracetamol or alternative medicines, may be drugs or poisons and may cause side effects. As such, schools are required to receive medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist) to administer any medication to students, including those bought over-the-counter.

If your child needs to take medication while they are at school please note the following:

Before any medication can be administered to a child at school, parents will need to complete the appropriate record sheet available form the school office.

Medication will only be administered if it is prescribed, in the original container and has a pharmacy label. If the medication is more complex with specific administration requirements then a letter from the medical practitioner should be provided.

Parents/carers must notify the school in writing:• of any requests and/or guidelines provided by the students' prescribing health practitioner or

pharmacist concerning medication administration• when medication is no longer required to be administered at school if changes occur in the dosage

requirements for student’s routine medication• and provide an accompanying letter/action plan from the prescribing health practitioner when

emergency medication changes occur• in advance if medication is being transported with the student for purposes other than administration at

school (respite, shared parental arrangements, before and after school care).

Over the counter medications (such as paracetamol or ibuprofen) will only be administered to students at school if medical authorisation (a letter from a medical practitioner) has been received.

Parents/carers are requested to provide and collect student’s medication in person if possible. Please contact the school to discuss transport of medication if you are not able to drop it off in person.

All medication (except emergency medication where previously arranged) must be stored at the school office and administered under the supervision of our trained staff. It cannot be self-administered by the student or classroom teacher.

Emergency Medications:Students who require emergency medications such as those to treat Asthma (puffer) or Anaphylaxis (epi-pen) must have an Action Plan developed by their Doctor, that describes how and when these medications are to be administered. If your child is capable and confident to administer their own Asthma medication please contact the school to develop a plan for how this will occur.

If you have any questions or concerns about administration of medication at school please contact the school to discuss.

Kirsty EDWARDSDeputy Principal Learning & Inclusion

LEADERSHIP TEAM NEWS contWelcome back!

It has been a great start to the year and we are excited to welcome new and returning students to what will be a wonderful year at Edge Hill State School. Our students have returned well rested and eager to learn, and we are impressed to see some fabulous work happening in classrooms as teachers and students get to know each other.

The classes for 2021 are:

As Year Level Deputy Principals, we work closely with class teachers to support the learning and well-being of all students. We encourage parents/carers to always contact the class teacher as the first port of call when you need to share or discuss any information about your child.

Attending school every day is essential – every day counts! Unless your child is unwell, it is expected that students arrive at school on time and attend all day, every day. The tables below illustrate why this is so important.

SPORT NEWSWelcome back to 2021!

This year we have three teachers in our PE team. We'd love to take this opportunity to welcome Mrs Carmel Bakurski to Edge Hill SS. Mrs Bakurski joins us from Cairns SHS where she taught year 7 - 10 PE classes for the last 15 years before deciding it was time for a change. We're very excited to have her as part of our teaching team! Mrs Bakurski is looking forward to teaching Year 2 in the pool, Year 3 both pool and land lessons and Year 4 land lessons. Mrs Marron will be teaching Prep, Year 1 pool and land lessons and Year 2 land lessons. And… Mr Ashton is back again! He'll be teaching Year 4 pool lesson and Year 5 and 6 for both pool and land.

This year parents will be required to sign a permission form in order for students to participate in our Water Safety andSwimming Program that is delivered across the year. Permission forms will be sent home with students. This semester Year 1, Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6 will be swimming once a week in Term 1. Year 3 and Year 5 will be swimming twice a week in Term 2, during weeks 1 - 5. We will provide information for Semester 2 swimming at a later date.

We appreciate your assistance in ensuring that your child is ready for PE. For land-based lessons students will require a hat and comfortable sports shoes. For swimming classes students will require swimmers, sun-safe shirt/rashie, towel, goggles (optional) and hair tied back. Please write your child's name on all of their belongings. If your student is unable to participate in any PE lesson (pool or land) please send a note to school explaining their situation.

We'll be announcing some great sporting opportunities throughout the term. There will be lots to look forward to!

MUSIC NEWSWelcome back to 2021. This year musically we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will be able to showcase the very hard work that all of our students do.

This includes our annual Prep music and Japanese concerts, performing in school events, our Senior ensembles performing at the Cairns Eisteddfod and the Senior choirs entering Choral Fanfare. The end of year choral concerts and of course 2021 is our senior school musical year. The musical is open for all Year 4 - 6 students who wish to perform, dance, act and sing and more details will be released regarding this in Term 2.

We welcome back our amazing instrumental teachers Mr McMenamin, Miss Mackenzie, Mr Barbagallo and Mr Christo.

Teaching classroom music this year we welcome back Mrs Hogan, Mrs Molen and me Miss Curtis.

String and Percussion instrumental lessons will begin this week. All timetables are available on the M block music room window. Woodwind and Brass lessons will begin in Week 3. Timetables, when completed, will be up on the M block music room window and all classroom teachers will be emailed them.

All ensembles begin in Week 3. Please remind students who play strings in Years 4 -6 they are all now part of an orchestra and need to check the M block music room window for their rehearsal morning. All ensembles begin at 7.45am and we ask students to arrive for 7.30am to ensure their instrument is tuned, their stand and music are ready and they are organised to begin rehearsals at 7.45am.

This year our two Senior choirs - Gold and Maroon will both be run by Miss Curtis and Mrs Hogan.

During this week all students in Years 3 - 6 that are interested in joining the senior choirs participated in a small audition. We are intending to compete in a number of competitions this year and unfortunately, we are governed by their rules and have maximum numbers for each choir. Students have been auditioned to ensure that we have a good balance of sound, age range and ability in each choir. Gold choir will rehearse every Monday morning 7.45-8.45am in X block and Maroon choir will rehearse every Wednesday morning 7.45am-8.45am in the PAC. Lists for these choirs will be displayed for students to check by Friday afternoon up on the M block music room window. These choirs begin Week 3.

Year 1 and 2 choir will be run by Miss Curtis and Mrs Molen and also begin in Week 3. Rehearsals are every Friday morning 8.10am-8.45am in X block. If students love to sing and perform in a group everyone is welcome, just turn up and have your name added to our role.

Currently Music Academy is still unable to run.

If there are any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Curtis on [email protected]
