    Rice Counts

At FreeRice.com you can donate 10 grains of rice to the needy simply be choosing theright answer to a word definition problem. Each correct answer results in the donation ofanother 10 grains.

FreeRice is the creation of 49-year old American computer programmer John Breen and isthe sister site ofPoverty.com, launched in January 2007 with a counter showing one persondying of hunger every 3.5 seconds. Breen also created The Hunger Site in 1999. All ofwhich are worth your time to review.

Who foots the bill for the food being donated? The site says, the rice is paid for by the ad-

vertisers whose names you see at bottom of your vocabulary screen including Toyota andBest Buy. As more people play the game, the site racks up more advertising revenue, whichin turn generates more food donations for the hungry.

On October 7, 2007, the first day of operation, only 830 grains of rice were donated. As ofJuly 31, 2010, the number of grains of rice given away amounted to 80,840,611,840 . Therice is donated by the United Nations World Food Programme, an organization that in 2008reached nearly 102 million people in 75 countries.

I like rice and eat it often. Generally, Id guess that I eat about cup of cooked rice as aserving. Brown rice expands three fold when cooked so I use about 1/6 cup of uncooked riceeach time. How many grains does that take? I counted about 740 grains but I could be off bya significant factor. Grains of rice are very small and hard to count. So, lets say a generous800 grains of rice for one moderate serving. Enough to keep a child from starvation for aday. Through 15 to 20 minutes of entertainment disguised as education I entice big business

to donate enough money to give one child one more day of life. By my count, FreeRice hasprovided over 101 million little servings of rice since its inception. I applaud their ingenuityand their insight.

However, theres just something a little uncomfortable for me about playing a game so thatanother person can get cup of rice to eat. If my answer is wrong that person goes on starv-ing. Also, playing the game is at my whim. In order to keep us intrigued the game has beenexpanded to include categories in art, chemistry, geography, math and language learning. You can get to be pretty smart while accumulating rice for the needy. The game is fun and isincreasingly more challenging. It appeals to our North American educated egos and makesus feel like were doing good in the world at the same time that were being entertained. Byrights, the game should be expanded into areas of broad public interest like country musicand sports trivia where many more people could rack up lots of grains of rice. I wonder whythats not the case? Not intellectual enough to be real charity? Most importantly, if a childis staving why cant we just give her a small handful of rice? It would cost about 2 a day. Then we could all go back to viewing entertainment as what it should be, just simply a goodtime. JK
