We use computers or everythingrom banking and investing to shoppingand communicating with others throughemail or chat programs. Although youmay not consider your communications"top secret," you probably do not wantstrangers reading your email, using yourcomputer to attack other systems, sendingorged email rom your computer, orexamining personal inormation storedon your computer (such as nancial
statements). Data lost due to disasters suchas a food or re is crushing, but losing itto hackers or a malware inection can havemuch greater consequences. General ideais that hackers break in to your systems and
do all the above mentioned harmul acts. However, hacker is not that bad. Thereare several categories o hackers and nowa days computer hacking is a highly paidoccupation as well. www.ehow.com deneshackers as computer enthusiasts who breakinto remote computer systems, combiningthe power o Internet and specializedprogramming skills to bypass sophisticatedsecurity systems or their own gain, ignoring any State and Federal laws they
break in the process. However its really hard to dene
or categorize hackers. The problem withthem is, they do whatever they want,
whenever they want and wherever their
interest guides them. However there aretwo kinds o hackers who can be identiedgood ones and the bad ones. Well, thegood ones, or ethical hackers also knownas white hat hackers are the hackersuse their intelligence to serve others. He helps to prevent computer hackingand also tracks down criminals throughcomputer activities. The bad ones orthe so called black hat crackers use theirknowledge to develop malicious computer
programs, viruses and to break in to highlysophisticated security systems. Ethicalhackers attempt to use the same methodscriminal hackers would use to break intoan organizations systems to expose gaps

According to www.ehow.com, proessional
computer hacking are one o the most high
paying computer careers.
This requires a bachelors degree
in computer science or inormation
technology. Oten, however, an MBA
with a ocus in technology is highly
preerred. An Ethical Hacker is one name
given to a Penetration Tester, who will be
usually employed by an organization that
trusts him or her to attempt to penetrate
networks or computer systems, using the
same methods as a hacker. The purpose o
this is nding and xing computer security
vulnerabilities o the system. There is lot
o proessional qualications available to
become an ethical hacker. The Certied
Ethical Hacker (CEh), Penetration Testingand Certied Ethical Hacker, Open

Security Certied Proessional, ECsA -
EC-Council Certied Security Analyst,
CEPT - Certied Expert Penetration
Tester, CPTE - Certied PenetrationTesting Expert, CPTs - Certied

them.
The U.S. Department o Deense
this month changed its regulations to
allow its own personnel to be trained in
computer hacking. The department says
its not training personnel to become
active hackers against other nations, but
rather to understand how they think in
an eort to prevent penetration by oreign
black hat hackers according to an articlein Time magazine.
Why is it special? The work is
highly paid and challenging, though ar
rom glamorous, oten requiring days o
persistent, repetitive work. The public
views about hackers have changed now. Its
not all those bad guys anymore. Its a world
o challenge, attractive income and its a
highly respected eld. People who try to
show their skills by breaking into systems
uninvited will nd themselves blacklisted.
Any company will not hire ormer"criminal" hackers, no matter how talented
they are. All those genius computer nerds
and geeks are ully welcome to the world o
Ethical Hackers! But they should be Geeks
with attitudes, never to break laws.

Introduction
I you use your computer or sometime, you will come across the question"where is it?" meaning "where is thatle which I know contains what I amlooking or?" Unless you have an organisedapproach, you will spend much timesearching through the clutter on yourcomputer. Spending precious time lookingor data can take the pleasure out o anykind o creative work you might be doing. It can add to your stress levels as well.Even i it's just a couple o minutes hereand there, it all adds up. Simple good le
management habits can hugely simpliyyour lie.
There are added benets to beingorganised. For example, your reputation
will be enhanced, i when asked orinormation, you produce it in a ewactions, rather than going searching or it.
When it comes to using Windows, please remember that Microsot keepstrying to make one product suit allpeople. This means that there are severaldierent ways to achieve the same result.Depending on whether you are a beginneror an advanced user, the way you use
Windows will be dierent. Thereore, it isnot advisable to get into lazy habits romthe beginning. Windows 7 introduces theuse o Libraries where the les may beanywhere but the library has a pointer toit. However, even then, you will need toorganise the libraries, so you can nd whatyou are looking or.
What ollows is common to allversions o Windows and in act is notsotware dependent. We explain here
what you need to do. Because each personis dierent their needs are dierent. Sospend some time up ront setting up thestructures that suit YOU, to make your lieeasier and more ullling.
File Management
File management is not a computerspeciality. Digital les are no dierentrom paper les, and when you have agood method o organisation, thingsdont get lost quite so easily. Any librarian
will tell you that the problem o savinginormation is not in the ling but in theretrieval aterwards.
In a library i all the books were placednext to each other in a long row, imaginehow long it would take to nd a particularbook. That is why we classiy them andput them in separate areas. When storing
clothes, i you put them all in one largedrawer, nding a particular piece oclothing could take a long time and disturbthe other clothes as well. That is why weseparate them and put them in dierentdrawers.
With books and clothes we can seewhat we are looking or and where theyare kept. With computer les we can onlysee the name, until you open the le tosee what is inside. So, the name is veryimportant. When you eventually nd thele you want and open it you may nd thecontents are not what you were looking orater all.
Basics of files
So, we can see that there are threethings o importance in dealing with les, namely the location o the le, the identity(name) and some specic contents. Thereare two kinds o les on your computer -program les (which do not change, andshould be let alone) and data les (whichcontain the results o your actions in using
the programs). Within data les, there aredierent types, depending on the programthat understands how to manipulate them. These les may be saved in groups calledFolders, like drawers in a cabinet. A older
can contain many levels o sub-oldersas well. Let us start with Location. Mostolders are normally kept on the main harddrive o your computer. You may elect
otherwise, but we will come to that later.
Naming
File naming is the oundation o lemanagement. In order to nd les later, itis a essential to adopt consistent methodsor naming les and olders. It would alsohelp i you dene names that will promptyour memory, based on some aspect o whyyou are saving the le. All guidelines on lenames apply equally to older names.
Although sotware may allow you to
have long names, it is not a good idea todo this as they are harder to read quickly.Keep le names short by using commonabbreviations, such as "Mtg" or meetingor "Actg" or accounting etc.
The computer is dumb, so make sureyour spelling is consistent, I you use ane instead o an a or example week orweak, it may be dicult to nd the le. Itdoes not matter how you mix capital andsimple letters. Special characters are notallowed, so stick to the alphanumeric set.
Adopt a older structure andseparate out topics by naming the olderappropriately. It is best to name yourolders according to the type o work orproject you are doing just as in paper ling
Where is it?Where Is It?Spending precious time looking for data can take the pleasure out of any
kind of creative work you might be doing. It can add to your stress levels

IT Savvy
o documents in a docket with a labelsaying what is contained inside. Again, keep your names short. Divide your mainolders into subolders by subject area.
Sotware will normally display le/older names in alphabetical order. I
you need to retain the names but changethe order in which they are displayed, put a number in ront to keep the orderyou desire, while keeping the namesmeaningul.
For example, olders with names suchas Actions, Backups, Current, Downloads,
will be shown in this order. However, tole in a dierent meaningul order usenumbers such as 1-Current, 2-Actions,3-Downloads, 4-Backups i it makes moresense.
I you want to keep some lestogether without creating another older, start each le name with a code, such asGR to indicate GREEN TOPICS. Donot capitalise entire le names as they arenot easily readable, but use capitals as innormal usage.
Saving
Saving les on your computer issimilar to the way you store and manageyour paper les. So store the inormationin olders by category, and in a sequence
that makes sense to you. Here are some tipsto ollow:
Update fle properties
Beore saving a le update itsproperties or Author, Title and Subject. That way, when you move the mouseover the le name it will show these values
which may help you to identiy i this is thele you want.
Avoid saving unnecessary documents
Be selective in what you keep. Thinkbeore you save anything. Glance through
the content, and save only that which isrelevant or you. Having unwanted dataon your computer adds to clutter andmakes it harder to nd things in the uture and it may, over time, also slow down
your computer'sperormance.
Avoid large older structures
I you need to put so many suboldersin a older that you can't see all o themat a glance, consider changing your olderstructure. It is easy to miss something iyou have to keep scrolling to see the entire
contents.
Store related documents together, whatever their type
For example, store Word documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and graphicsrelated to a particular project in a singleolder - rather than having one olderor presentations or all projects, anotheror spreadsheets, and so on. This way,
it is much quicker to nd, open, andattach documents or aparticular project.Remember, thereare two ways oopening a le, byusing a program
All hackers know
about the default
storage locations
so it is easy to write
programs to access
these once they
have access to yourcomputer. It is a
wise measure not
to use these default
locations to store
files permanently.
Then they have to go
searching for where
it is and what it iscalled
- like Word or by clicking a documentcreated by Word.
Storage Locations, Privacy and Security
Unless you say otherwise, Microsotprograms save your les in a older calledDocuments or My Documents. This isnot the case with saving les rom otherprograms or the Internet. Most programshave a eature to dene a deault storagelocation, that is where les will be storedautomatically. You can change this to suityour convenience, so you do not have tosave all les in Documents.
All hackers know about the deaultstorage locations so it is easy to writeprograms to access these once they haveaccess to your computer. It is a wisemeasure not to use these deault locations
to store les permanently. Then they haveto go searching or where it is and whatit is called. So i your le name is Main
Accounts stored in a deault location andit has all details o your accounts, you areat risk and vulnerable to any hacker attack.Remember most programs are not intuitivelike humans, so even the best anti-virus,anti-spam and other protection programscannot help you ALWAYS, as they will notknow about the new techniques hackersare using.
I you use your computer or sensitive
material such as nances, it is a good ideato permanently store these les on a pendrive. You may work with them on yourhard disk or the pen drive, but when younish, make sure the updated les areon the pen drive and delete those on thehard disk. This is a precaution in case yourcomputer breaks down, and your sensitiveinormation is not available to repairersand others. When you delete use theshit key to permanently delete instead omoving to trash.
Try not to save account numbers onthe same drive as account details by givingthe accounts your own names. This way,i les all into hackers hands they stillcannot get at your money. Needless to say,you should make regular backups to have
a separate copy o your working les.

Finding and Viewing files
When we look or les, we look ornames, which are usually displayed inalphabetical order, so being completelyamiliar with the English alphabet willhelp speed up the process. Although lesare saved in alphabetical order, it maysometimes help to view them in a dierentorder when searching or something.Clicking 'sort by' rom the View menuenables selection o dierent ordersor viewing such as by name, date, size, ascending, descending etc . This does not
change the order in which les are saved.Selecting 'name' restores the view to bealphabetical.
When looking or a le it may alsohelp to choose details rom the Viewmenu to select what you want to see aboutthe les. There are many details that canbe selected such as name, date modied, size etc. These selections are placed onbuttons within the le display window soyou can easily switch between them to nd
what you are looking or. When lookingor pictures, photos and graphical items,
use thumbnails or icons rom the Viewmenu. For general use do not view les asthumbnails because they take up a lot ospace, making it dicult to view many lesat a glance. Instead use List rom the Viewmenu.
Another way o nding a le youhave used recently is to look at My Recent
Documents or Recent depending on
which version o Windows you are using. Also, Microsot Oce Programs can give
you a list o recently used les when you
open the program. Finally, i you cannotnd the le within your older structure,
you can use the 'search' or nd acility
using various characteristics o the le -too many to be outlined here. Be warned
that this will take time, so it should be
your last resort. In general, many o theseoptions may be unnecessary i the les
are named well and stored in meaningulolder structures.
Conclusion
You owe it to yoursel to le eectively, however boring this may seem. But or anysystem to be useul and eective, it mustalso be convenient or you. To some extent, this depends on the nature o your work
and how you use your computer. So, although there's no single solution
to good le management, we hope that bycustomizing the tips above to serve yourneeds, you will never again wonder "whereis it?"

Harsha Purasinghe, 36, is a youngEntrepreneur in the eld o ICT whopursued his school-boy dream o engagingin an IT related business. Little did herealize that his passion or innovative ideas
would make him a successul businessmanand earn him global recognition.
Harsha ounded Microimage in 1993,at the age o 19 while studying at AnandaCollege with ew other students. Thecompany grew by trial and error and morethan 10 years ater its inception, Harsha
was crowned as the Most outstandingentrepreneur in IT/BPO industry in SriLanka in 2007, in due recognition o hisproessionalism.
His company has received manyaccolades since then, both local andglobal, including the inaugural GSMA
Asia Mobile Innovation Award, receivingcommendation at GSM World Awardsand being Runners-up at the Asia PacicICT Awards. (APICTA)
He shares with us his success story andgives young entrepreneurs an insight intothe uture o ICT and the role Sri Lanka canplay. To be a successul entrepreneur, oneneed passion, innovation and think-big, Harsha, strongly states. He also sayspragmatically that an entrepreneur needscash or business, without which you
cannot run a business, but cautions againsthaving any ancyul expenses at the outset.
Harsha recalls how his team developedSinhala onts, experimented and addedinnovations, such as a spell-checker, tohave an edge over the competition. Talkingabout the transormation o his companyMicroimage, Harsha says that rom beingunknown to known in the marketplace, branding is o paramount importance, saying that it is vital in an industry likeIT, where piracy is common-place. Anentrepreneur has to be sharp enough tograb opportunities that come ones way,Harsha says, recalling a breakthroughbusiness he devised by innovating a time-attendance system, which was marketedto garment actory owners. It was a pay-
roll sotware or running on Windows, which gave an impetus to the garmentindustry, while giving him good business. He also stated that while growing-up inthe industry, he benchmarked his productsagainst IT giants like Microsot, anddeveloped an attitude that always made histeam stretch.
Along the way, we learnt the art ocustomer care. I employed people whowere best in the eld, who can keep abreasto the competition and deliver. I am alsoproud to say that my riends rom schooldays have stood by me in good times andbad.
Moving on as an entrepreneur, Harshascompany became the rst company to 1st100% web based enterprise HRIS sotwarein Sri Lanka.
Microimage became the rst South
East Asian company to delve intoenterprise radio automation. Thisinitiative reached or higher goals in 2004

Red-Burn and local authority in ICT theICT Agency.
What we endeavoured to do was toempower people to send messages in theirlocal languages, he said, highlighting thatthey wanted to take away the ear o using
IT savvy products. Harsha re-countedthe devastating Tsunami in 2004, sayingthat they were instrumental in devisingdisaster and emergency warning systems
which are used in natural cataclysms suchas Tsunamis. Innovated with the desire tohelp humanity, this product has won manyaccolades locally and globally. Harsha alsosays that he was humbled to be able to learnrom Michael Porter in his Executive MBAclassroom, at Harvard Business School.
This eld has taken me around
the world. I have met many high-prolepeople, and have been privileged to be atmany global awards. One such moment
was meeting Craig Barret, Chairman oIntel in Sri Lanka, where I had to meethim in ront o an audience o 750 topcorporate personalities, he reminiscences.
He has met many well-knownpersonalities in the corporate world, buthas not lost his love or Sri Lanka and therural youth, as he visits dierent towns inSri Lanka regularly to share knowledge ohis IT related products.
These are random thoughts o asuccessul entrepreneur, who was oncea nervous school-boy who lost theopportunity to enter a university. Being
without an avenue to go to a university, hepursued his passion and dream o reachinggreat heights in the IT industry.
From smaller beginnings at his athersoce room, Harsha and his team haveevolved rom being small to reaching globalheights. Do what you love and work witha passion; and skys the limit, says Harsha.
That is what young people shouldaim or. To be truly Sri Lankan, yetcompete on an international platorm, andturn your ideas into innovations that helppeople and give you great returns too.

Community forestry has contributed to restoring forest resources in
Nepal. Forests account for almost 40 per cent of the land in the
country. Although this area was decreasing at an annual rate of 1.9
per cent during the 1990s, this decline was reversed, leading to anannual increase of 1.35 per cent over the period 2000 to 2005.
Community forestry occupies a central place in forest management
in Nepal. In this approach, local users organized as Community
Forest User Groups (CFUGs) take the lead and manage resources,
while the government plays the role of supporter or facilitator. Forest
management is a community effort and entails little financial or other
involvement on the part of the government.

FOREST MANAGEMENTIN NEPAL
Since 1980, about 14,000 CFUGs have
been formed. About one-fourth of
Nepals national forest is now managed
by more than 35 per cent of the total
population. Community forestry is now
the second-largest forest management
regime after government-managed
forests.
Forest user groups develop their own
operational plans, set harvesting rules,
set rates and prices for products,
and determine how surplus income is
distributed or spent. There is evidence
of significant improvement in the
conservation of forests (both increased
area and improved density) and
enhanced soil and water management.
Benefits from community forestry
management
The advantages of community forestry
include employment and income
generation from forest protection, tree
felling and log extraction, as well as
non-timber forest products. Additional
economic benefits are in the form of
sustained wood fuel sources, which
contribute more than three-quarters of
energy needs to households. Improved
forest management and cover also
contribute to nature conservation.
Community forestry promotes inclusive
growth. Some community forestactivities have initiated a scholarship
programme for low income people, as
well as savings and credit operations
among members, including loans to
finance income generation activities.
Community forestry also empowers
CFUGs with greater influence over
decision making through participation
in planning and management.
Policies to protect deforestation
The Ministry of Forest and SoilConservation (MFSC), as the lead
institution for creating an enabling
environment for forest resource
management, has implemented two
policies, including Community Forestry
and the Leasehold Forestry Policy,
that have helped the government of
Nepal achieve significant success in
forest conservation and environmental
protection. The Master Plan for the
Forestry Sector prepared in 1989,
the Forest Act of 1993, the Forest
Regulations of 1995, and the Forestry
Sector Policy of 2000 were developedand implemented to support the
community forestry programme, after
earlier efforts at centralized control.
The Forest Act and Forest Rules
accelerated the transfer of forests to
forest user groups; they provide the
legal basis for the implementation
of community forestry and recognize
CFUGs as self-governing autonomous
corporate bodies for managing and
using community forests.
The remarkable turnaround in forest
management in Nepal is directly
attributable to the benefits generated
for community groups, in the form of
environmental goods, services and
welfare enhancements.

Exciting New
OpportunitiesBy Nalin Goonewardene
Introduction
One of the fastest growing areas
in careers and jobs is in Green
Professions - primarily in the developed
world. This is because the public
demand that major organisations do
something positive towards developing
a sustainable living environment. They
want a long term future for their children
and a healthier life style for themselves.
This has lead to the creation of new
jobs supported by areas of study
attached to existing disciplines in
many professional areas such as law,
engineering, agriculture etc. New jobs
and careers are being offered in these
areas with good starting salaries and
future prospects as the industry is set
to grow, despite the economic turmoil
of recent years.
There are some opportunities to
advance careers in the greenprofessions in Sri Lanka, but the
most exciting and lucrative ones are
overseas. Here we examine what it
means to students who want to embark
on such careers, taking a look at just
two professions - The Environmental
Engineer and The Environmental
Lawyer.
The Environmental Engineer
Environmental engineering is not a
new subject by itsel, though the scope isdeep and wide regarding the environment.A person without a basic engineeringbackground in Maths, Physics, Chemistry,Biology, English etc. would be unable toollow and understand the new subjectareas suciently well to qualiy and besuccessul in practice.
Below, we provide a brie outlineo some environmental areas and theirsignicant actors, to give an idea o thescope that is covered including methods ondealing with these actors, and conorming
to existing/new standards and laws.
Courses may also cover variousproessional subjects e.g. works and costmanagement, transportation engineering, irrigation engineering, hydraulics,
environmental engineering and earthquaketechnology etc. to gain specic higherqualications. These courses are oeredin many developed and even developingcountries such as India. The areas covered
will depend on the course.
Some Environmental Areas covered are:
Air Pollution and Control Methods
The sources o pollution and their types, eects on human beings, global eects,
particular control devices and generalmethods o controlling gaseous emissions.
Special Treatment Methods
Absorption, reverse osmosis, de-fuoridation, Ion exchange, ultra ltration.
Theories o Industrial Waste Treatment
Volume and strength reduction, neutralisation, equalization, proportioning, nitrication and denitrication, removal o
Phosphates.Solid Waste Management
The sources, composition and properties, collection and handling, separation andprocessing.

Solid Waste Disposal Methods
Land lling, incineration composting.
Hazardous Waste
Denition disposal and control methodsor nuclear, biomedical, chemical waste,
efuent standards.
Noise Pollution
Eects o noise and control methods, air emission and efuent standards, air standards as well as environmentprotection.
Engineering continues to be a vibrantsector with strong demand in sometraditional sectors and growing demandin newer, emerging ones. EngineeringInstitutes predict an increasing demand or
skills in the development o environmentaltechnologies to reduce carbon emissions, provide sustainable energy supplies, develop new techniques and materials orconstruction and to sustain sanitation and
waste management.
The United Nations EnvironmentProgramme expects the value o suchproducts and services to reach nearly2000 billion by 2020, but both the
Conederation o British Industry andthe US National Renewable Energy
Laboratory have identied a serious lack o
engineers as a major problem now and intothe immediate uture. Australia is already
desperately short o highway engineers,
geotechnical engineers and hydro-geologists or their huge inrastructure
developments.
It is estimated that about 50% oexperienced engineers are due to retire
within the next 10-15 years in the western
world which will add to the shortage andincrease the demand or environmental
engineers.
Be aware though that there is strongcompetition rom those who have already
embarked on the exciting opportunities
available. A new source o competition isrom the increasing number o girls taking
ICT, physics and technology, maths,
chemistry and biology and outperormingboys in general at A Level in these subjects.
The Environmental Lawyer
Environmental Law is new, in theworld o practicing law. In layman terms,
traditionally, budding lawyers studied'law subjects', dealing primarily withnon-physical entities. In the new worldo environmental law, there is a needto have a good background regardingenvironmental issues, which mainly deal
with physical entities. Also, the law itselis comparatively 'new' and undergoingconstant evolutionary change. Anotherdierence is that the law is heavily balancedtowards dealing with corporations, and notso much with individuals.
Further courses cover many diverseaspects o environmental law such as
waste permitting, water law, liability orcontaminated land, health and saety andenvironmental compliance or variousindustries.
A practicing environmental lawyermay have to deal with other diverse aspectssuch as:
ensuringcorrectpermitsareinplaceforregulatory and compliance issues
regulatoryissuesonpolicydevelopmentand strategic advice to companies
assessingenvironmentalrisk
risk apportionment on corporate andproperty transactions
prosecutionsrelatingtopollution
defendingprosecutions healthandsafety
environmentalduediligence
So are these careers for you?
These careers have a strong uture. It is now understood worldwide thatenvironmental issues have to be takenseriously and that the world must worktogether to provide sustainable livingor all concerned. Meantime, the worldpopulation is growing and there will bean increased need or the basics o ood, clothing and shelter, as well as energy, transport, employment, etc. All this withadequate protection o the environment.
Thereore, the need or skilled qualiedengineers and lawyers (among others) willincrease as will the ability to grow withthe changes that are to come, and theirattendant rewards.
So i you want to ride the wave ochange, this is or you.
However, a word o warning. Manyo the leading developments, study courses, qualications and jobs will be outside SriLanka, at least in the near uture. It is noteveryones desire to leave amily and riendsin this paradise island or harsher climateso weather and industry in lands ar away. Then there is the chance that with greaterrewards you may never come back. Finally, there is the cost. Not everyone can aordto take up these challenges abroad. Buti you can deal with these issues, and areadaptable, a promising uture awaits you.
We hope that this brie overviewgives an insight into two o the excitingnew opportunities or careers in GreenProessions that you may decide toinvestigate.
Thereore, it may sound strangebut, science is good or law - whereenvironmental disputes are concerned.
A scientic background (particularly inbiology or chemistry) provides a scienticapproach to analysis and problem solving,
which helps in bringing together thestrands o an argument resulting romlegal research, to advise clients who expect
complex ideas to be communicated clearlyand concisely. A scientic background alsohelps in speaking the same environmentallanguage as the clients and understandingissues rom a practical as well as legalperspective. In addition, much time isspent using online databases and searchengines or research, as well as to keep intouch with changes, so acquired IT skills
will prove to be invaluable.
The UK oers a CPE (CommonProessional Examination) or GDL(Graduate Diploma in Law) which can
be ollowed by the LPC/BVC proessionalexams to enable scientists to becomelawyers.
The CPE/GDL are law conversioncourses or graduates o other disciplines.
Although they have dierent titles, thereis no dierence between them in corecontent and proessional accreditation. Both courses allow progression to the LegalPractice Course (LPC) or solicitors, or theBar Vocational Course (BVC) or barristers. The CPE/GDL gives an intensive, year-
long oundation in core legal knowledgeand skills. The course doesnt cover theull range o subjects available on a three-year degree programme, but it provides theskills and methodologies to pick these uplater.
New jobs and careers
are being offered in
these areas with good
starting salaries
and future prospects
as the industry is set
to grow, despite the
economic turmoil ofrecent years
