UTILITY MECHANIC ADVANCED SKILL SET CERTIFICATE (ASSC) [PROGRAM HOURS: 24]

Prepare for employment in the line service industry in this two-semester program. Gain experience typically limited to internal apprenticeship opportunities in this 30 credit hour pro-gram. Learn about electrical distribution and circuits, to safely work around power lines, inspect and climb utility structures/poles and install utility poles and utility pole equipment. Students benefit from internship opportunities through New River CTC partners, and Class A CDL licensing is included in the program.

Prerequisites:
Be a minimum of 18 years of age for acceptance into the EDET program. Also note, the student must be 18 years old to obtain their required Class A CDL Learners permit. A student that has graduated from high school or has a GED/TASC has the option to start their general education courses prior to being accepted into the line service program.
Possess a Class A CDL Learners permit.
Successfully complete a pre-assessment screening at the A.T.C in Ghent, WV to gauge physical agility and fear of heights prior to class registration. Pre-assessments are scheduled several months prior to the beginning of the semester and applicants are notified of the dates once determined. You may also call 304-929-3300 for the scheduled dates.

Complete a Department of Transportation (D.O.T.) Physical- Long Form Physical at your physician’s office.
Have a valid unrestricted driver's license for a minimum of 2 years and do not have a history of DUI, impaired driving violations or a history of license suspensions. If you questions regarding your driving record and the unrestricted driver’s license requirement, please contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles to answer your questions.
A student accepted into the EDET program must submit to and pass a random drug screening prior to CDL training.
