    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:This social studies lesson plan is designed for a 1st grade student to learn about the 7

continents. This lesson will use worksheets and YouTube videos.

    B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st Grade Skill Level: All learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, pairs for activity, and individual assessment

    C. Materials: Paper Pencil Projector Worksheets Paper plates Continent cut outs

    D. Objectives:o NV State Social Studies Standards

G5.1.1 Differentiate between and identify water and land on a map andglobe and use the terms ocean and continent.

o Student-Friendly Standards I can tell the difference between water and land on the map and globe

    and identify the continents.

    E. Procedure:1. Introduction:

I will start off the lesson by telling students that they have already learned aboutthe bodies of water that take up most of Earth, now they will be learning about

the land that takes up the rest of Earth, the continents.

I will ask students if they know the continent that we live on. I will then tellstudents that we live on the continent of North America

    2. Students will then watch the video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zya2bqrLVfI,which sings about the 7 continents.

    3. Once students are done watching the video they we will go back in a whole groupand on the class map we will locate each continent on the map so that students know

    where they are.

    4. Students will partner up and create a paper plate globe. The students will color thecontinents all different colors and label them. Then they will color their plate blue to

signify the ocean. Students will paste their continents on the plate the way they are on

the map. Students will display their globes in the classroom.

    5. CLOSURE: Students will do a ticket out the door. They will answer the question what isthe difference between continents and oceans. They will also have to name the sevencontinents.

    F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

I will use the ticket out the door to measure student understanding.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If students can tell me that continents are land and oceans are water I will know that

they understand the concepts also students have to be able to name the continents.

    G. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think that the easiest part of the lesson will be differentiating between continents

    and oceans.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I dont think that there will be any challenging things to teach but I do think

students might have a hard time naming the seven continents at first.

    3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I will have students look up one continent and the ocean that is in that continent fo

homework. I will have parents help students.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who do not grasp the concept I will pair them up with a partner. The

partner can help them if they get confused.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I might want to change the ticket out the door because 1st graders might not be

    able to write that well.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson plan was remembering that I am

teaching 1stgrade and that I didnt want to overwhelm them with complex

    assignments.
