    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:This social studies lesson plan is designed for 5th grade students to get further insight on

    how life was in the 13 colonies specifically, The Middle Colonies. This lesson uses the 5th

    grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History (pgs.188-199).

    B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th Grade Skill Level: All learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, small group discussion, individual assessment.

    C. Materials:

    5th grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook United States History Paper Pencil

    D. Objectives:o NV State Social Studies Standards

    H1.5.5 Describe the social, political, and religious lives of people in theNew England, Middle, and Southern colonies.

    o Student-Friendly Standards I can describe how people lived in New England, Middle, and Southern

    Colonies.

    E. Procedure:1. I will begin the lesson by telling students that they will be learning about how people

    lived in the Middle colonies. I will then review with my students what they learned the

    previous day about New England life. In small groups students will predict how life was

    in the Middle colonies. After we read the chapter students will see if their predictions

    are correct.

    2. Before we begin reading we will go over the vocabulary words and students will writedown the definition to the words: proprietor, treaty, representative, free marketeconomy, free enterprise artisan, laborer, and apprentice.

    3. We will then begin reading the book. I will stop and ask students questions and they wilreply:

    ( After the third paragraph on page 189) How did the proprietors control theirland?

    ( At the end of the last paragraph on page 189) Why did Penn want to start hisown colony?

    ( At the end of the second paragraph on page 198) How did people make aliving?

    ( At the end of the chapter on page 199) What were the roles of children?4. After we are done reading students will be put into groups of 4. In each group students

    will pick a role out of a hat of a person that lived in the Pennsylvania and the middle

    colonies. The roles will be women, men, slaves, apprentice, William Penn, Benjamin

    Franklin. Each member of the group will write down 3 things that they do as a townsperson. After they are done they will discuss their roles with their groups. Students can

    add more to their description after talking with their group. Once students are done I

    will have each person that had the same roles stand up. (For example if 2 people had

    the role of women). Each person will share what they do in the town.

    5. CLOSURE: Once we are done with the activity I will have students individually writedown why they think the town of Pennsylvania and the Middle colonies were so

    successful.

    F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

    I will use the closure question to measure students understanding.

    Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.I will know students understand the concepts if they can tell me that Pennsylvania and

    the Middle colonies were so successful because they gave people religious freedom

    and treated people as equals. I will also know they understand the concepts if they

    discuss how people made a living in the Middle Colonies.

    G. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

    I think that the whole lesson will be easy.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I think that students might get a little confused about the directions to the activity,

    but thats it.

    3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

    I will have students compare and contrast the Middle Colonies of New York and

    New Jersey to Pennsylvania.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?For students who do not grasp the concepts I will have them paired up with

    someone that can assist them with further instructions.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?This lesson plan as well might need to be split into two separate days.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?There were no difficult parts in writing this lesson plan but the most tedious part

    would be writing the procedures.
