    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:Through a PowerPoint presentation, discussion, and game play, students will be able to

explain what rights they have as voters. Students will also discuss their opinions as to

whether they believe they have a duty to vote.

o Warm up: Individualo Discussion: Whole groupo PowerPoint: Whole groupo Game: Whole groupo Closure: Whole group

    C. Materials: Social Studies Journal Pencil Power point presentation

    D. Objectives:o NV State Social Studies Standardso C13.4.2 Explain that democracy involves voting, majority rule, and setting rules.o Student-Friendly Standards

I will learn my responsibilities as a voter.E. Procedure:

    1. As a warm up I will have students write down in their journal what they think their rightsas a voter are individually. I will prompt them with ideas such as: money, presidents,

schooling, etc. Students will have ten minutes to write down their ideas.

    2. As a whole group we will discuss what they wrote down on their warm up. Eachstudent will give say one right that they think they have as voters. I will then ask students

in their opinion do they think that it is their duty to vote. With a show of hands we willsee how many students think it is their responsibility to vote.

    3. After we are done discussing the issues students will focus their attention on aPowerPoint presentation that goes over what rights are and what responsibilities as a

    4. Once the students have viewed the PowerPoint presentation they will play would yourather. I will have the entire class stand in the middle of the classroom. Then they will

get two choices. For example (If you would you rather play basketball go to the right

side of the classroom or if you would rather play handball go to the left side of the

classroom). There will be 10 questions asked. The level of questions will go from general

student friendly topics such as the one in the example, to school issues. For example,

(would you rather have the same computers in the computer lab or brand new

    computers).

    5. CLOSURE: At the end of the game I will have a whole group discussion and ask studentsif they think that their opinions matter. I will explain to them that through voting such as

the way they did playing would you rather people get to express how they want the

country to be run. They can say what issues they think are important and which ones

are not as important. I will also point out that it is students right and responsibility to

vote so that their voice is heard and that they can change issues that dont like

    through voting.

    F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

I will use the discussion at the end of the lesson to measure students understanding.

They will get to tell me what they believe rights and responsibilities are.

Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.Through the discussion at the end of the lesson will ask if students could relate the

    game to actual voting itself.

    G. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

I think the easiest part of the lesson will be teaching students that they have the

    right to vote.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?I think teaching students what their responsibilities as a voter are will be the most

challenging to teach because they might get confused on what rights and

responsibilities are.3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

At the beginning of the next class I will have students write in their journal the

    difference between rights and responsibilities.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students that do not grasp the concepts I will go over the powerpoint one more

time so that they understand the definitions.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I think the discussion questions might need to be modified in order not to confuse

    students or overwhelm students.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson was finding activities to go with the

lesson. Finding an objective that fit this particular lesson was also sort of difficult.
