EDE/kje January 2020 Dear Parent/Carer, Y8 Academy Day – Thursday 19 th March 2020 Twice a year the timetable is suspended for the day to provide students with an array of exciting, enriching and rewarding experiences; enhancing the curriculum, building the cultural capital of students and further developing their interpersonal skills that will underscore their successful development to adulthood. These days are referred to as Academy Days and are proudly one of the highlights of the school calendar and an integral part of the Quest Seven Year Journey. Students who have achieved the appropriate Four Star Standard will have the opportunity to go on a trip. A range of trips are provided, with some requiring payment. All payment must be made on ParentPay. The second Academy Day of this academic year will be on Thursday 19 th March. For fee-paying trips, booking opens on ParentPay on the following days, according to a students’ Four Star Standard award from the previous half term. - 4 Star Standard – Friday 17 th January - 3 Star Standard – Thursday 23 rd January - 2 Star Standard – Tuesday 28 th January If students select a trip that involves public transport, they can be dismissed from East Croydon Train Station at the end of the day. If you wish your child to be bought back to the Academy, please ensure you email me with this request, and include your child’s name, tutor group and the trip they will be on. Students will need to bring a packed lunch. Students eligible for a Free School Meal will be provided with a packed lunch. The choices for Year 8 students will be as follows: 1) Mary Poppins The Musical, Central London, £29.50 A spoonful of sugar won’t be needed to enjoy this musical treat! The magical story of the world’s favourite Nanny is on stage with dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs. A supercalifragilisticexpialidocious experience! 2) Legoland Windsor, £24.25 Learn to drive at the Lego City Driving School or ride the Dragon in the Knights Kingdom or try to stay dry on the Viking River Splash or maybe spend your time in the Games zone – playing the Lego character games on a Playstation 4 or maybe just marvel at the Lego creations!

3) KidZania, Central London, £14 KidZania is the UK’s first educational entertainment experience where students can learn real-life skills in a 75,000sq ft child-size city built just for them. From the Aviation Academy to the Radio Station, Police Station or Hospital, the city streets are lined with real-life establishments that students can explore. 4) Frylands Woodland Activity Centre, £20 In 60 acres of woodland enjoy a fun-packed day of activities. You will learn some archery skills and practise your skills at the archery range. Test your strength and stamina on the assault course – time yourself or just have some fun. Then attempt the 27ft climbing wall. 5) London Eye and River Cruise, £17.95 Take ‘flight’ for great views of London from one of the world’s tallest Ferris wheels. Followed by a river cruise up the Thames. Both experiences include commentaries about what you see around you. 6) Twickenham Stadium Tour, £13.50 Explore the history of the game from around the world. Find out ‘What Kind of Rugby Player’ in the Play Rugby zone or test out your commentating skills in the Commentary Booth. Take a seat in the England Dressing Room and run out of the Players’ tunnel. Includes a ‘Rugby in Motion’ workshop learning how strength, speed, power, endurance and agility are essential to the modern game, as well as the impact of GS technology. 7) Oxygen Trampolining Park, £10 Freejumping session on over 100 trampolines and 14 zones. The site also has a mega airbag, speed reaction, Aeroball games, and trampoline dodgeball courts. Trampolines are connected so you can bounce, climb and somersault to your heart’s content! 8) Sealife Centre and Climate Change workshop, Central London, £9.95 See sharks swim beneath your feet. Meander through The Ocean Walk, a glass tunnel under the ‘sea’. See rays, sharks, turtles, seahorses and penguins. Includes a workshop on climate change, looking at adaptations of polar bears, orcas and sharks. 9) The Shrek Adventure, London, £7.95 Board a 4D magical flying bus on a journey to help Princess Fiona and Donkey find Shrek. Mysteries, magic and puzzles await as you meet the main characters from the film. Includes other Dreamworks films so you can watch the circus of Madagascar, learn Kung Fu with Panda Po and visit the Hidden World to see the legendary Night Fury! 10) Go Ape (Battersea Park), £10 Big outdoor fun in the big city! Get up high in the trees for spectacular views across London and the park. There will be people above, below and around you. You will need a head for heights and desire for thrills with exciting zip wires, climbing nets and treetop rope walks. Free trips Students cannot select which free trip they go on, this will be decided by the numbers of students remaining once the trip payments have closed. 1) Museum of Docklands 2) The Design Museum
