LearningAssociates
CandidatesadmittedtotheEd.D.programarereferredtoas“learningassociates”ratherthanthemoretypical“students”designation.ThereasonforthisisthattheUniversityrecognizesthesignificantpracticalexperiencesthatcandidatesbringwiththemintotheprogram.Facultyandcandidateswillworktogetherasassociatesinthelearningenterprisebyformingcommunitiesofinquirydesignedtomeldtheorywithpractice.Theoutcomewillbepractitioner-scholargraduatesbetterinformedbytheapplicationoftheoryandresearchandfacultyenhancedbycurrentreal-lifepractice.
CohortModel
The Ed.D. program utilizes a cohort model in which learningassociateswillprogressthroughtheprogramwithacommongroupof peers. A key element of the cohort design is a “systems”orientation that leverages individual talent to address largerregional educational issues. As part of the University’s regionalstewardship focus,a significantpartof thecoreandspecializationcoursework incorporates team-based activities in which learning
associates will be involved in exploring regional educational issues and then, as a team, attemptingtopositivelyimpactanimportantconcernchosenbythelearningassociates.Further,a key assumption in this approach is thatmost of the important educational issues cannot beresolvedthroughindividualandisolatedeffortssuchasarecommoninmanytraditionaldoctoralprogramsbutrathermustcomefromteamandinteragencyeffortsthatincreasetheefficacyoftheinitiative.
