WHAT IS MOBILITY?

Page 5: ED411 | 2017 | Track 2: Technology Disruptions Impacting Economic Development

#ED411

MOBILITY STUDYThe business community expressed a need for better connectivity for their workforce.

The majority of residents / employees rely on personal vehicles for their mobility

needs.

o Central Ohio Transportation Authority (COTA) provides a limited bus service

o On-demand car services have a small footprint

Additional demands will be placed on the existing personal vehicle infrastructure.

o Bridge Street District

o Historic District improvements

o Expansion of the OU campus

o Increased development along the interstate corridors

CONNECTED MARYSVILLE

A plan to build a fully connected City

Page 18: ED411 | 2017 | Track 2: Technology Disruptions Impacting Economic Development

#ED411

AUTONOMOUS VS. CONNECTED

Autonomous Vehicle (AV)

Car-mounted sensors

Visually detects the other vehicles and the built environment

Can operate without a connection to any other system

Ranges from driver assist features to self driving cars

Page 19: ED411 | 2017 | Track 2: Technology Disruptions Impacting Economic Development

#ED411

AUTONOMOUS VS. CONNECTED

Connected Vehicle (CV)

Relies on a wireless connection

No autonomous features required

Provides information to the car/driver to make better decisions

Can easily be installed in existing vehicles

On Board Unit (OBU)

In-car display with a user interface

Connection to a car’s diagnostic port

Page 20: ED411 | 2017 | Track 2: Technology Disruptions Impacting Economic Development

#ED411

CONNECTED TO WHAT?

Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I)

An OBU connects to fixed Road Side Units (RSUs)

Traffic Signals, Street Lights, Pole-mounted radios, etc.

Allows for collection of data from vehicles

Sends messages to vehicles

Page 21: ED411 | 2017 | Track 2: Technology Disruptions Impacting Economic Development

#ED411

CONNECTED TO WHAT?

Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V)

Requires another connected vehicle to be in close proximity

Shares real-time location, speed and braking

Passes on safety messages

Page 22: ED411 | 2017 | Track 2: Technology Disruptions Impacting Economic Development

CONNECTED VEHICLE

APPLICATIONS Signal Phase and Timing (SPaT) Data

Pedestrian warning detection

Curve/queue ahead warnings

Sight distance/obscured view

Safety messages

OTHER APPLICATIONS Vehicle Platooning

Narrow lanes

Higher speeds

Closer spacing

Increased capacity

Page 26: ED411 | 2017 | Track 2: Technology Disruptions Impacting Economic Development

#ED411

OTHER APPLICATIONS Connected Signals

Device is installed in signal cabinets

Collects real time signal timing data

Uses a cellular network (4g LTE) to send data to a server

Data is then made available to a cell phone app or in-car display

Various OEMs have incorporated this app in their new models
