General Motors of Knowledge. . . . Therewill be so many physicists th at theresearch centers will advertise for philoso-phers." The Journal is so spiced withhis personal opinions or private philoso-phy t ha t the reader will absorb many ofthem for himself.

APPLIFD MATHEMATICS IN CHEMICALENGINEERINGHamld S. Mickley, Associate Professorof Chemical Engineering, and Thomas K.Sherwood, Professor of Chemical Engi-neering, Massachusetts Institute of Technol-ogy; Charles E. Reed, EngineeringManager, Chemical Department, GeneralElectric Ca. Second edition. McGraw.Hill Book Co.. New York, 1957. xii +41 3 pp. 99 figs. 16 X 23.5 cm. $9.

THE first edition of "Sherwood andReed" which appeared in 1939 has beenentirely rearranged and rewritten by Prc-fessor Mickley. Experience in using thetext with students, and the many newmathematical techniques which are beingused in chemical engineering, have calledfor new trea tment of old material and th eaddition of new topics in the secondedition.

Now Chapter I on Treatment of Engi-neering Data and Chapter I1an Interpre-tation of Engineering Data deal wit hm at erial previously in Chapters I, VII, VIII,and I X on graphical representation, differ-entiation and integration, interpolation, and theory of errors. Chapter I1 now dis-cusses variance and design of experiments.Chapter I11 on the MathematicalFormulation of the Physioal Problemdiscusses the method of setting up thedifferential equation for a procesp. Thisnaturally is followed by Chapter IV on theSolution of Ordinary Differential Equa-tions in which the usual methods of solu-tion are given. Because the usual meth-ods are not always applicable, Chapter Vdiscusses Series and Numerical Solutionsof Ordinary Differential Equations.Chemical and physical prooesses f r equently involve more than two variables,so Chapter VI deals with the Formulationof Partial Differential Equations andChapter VII with the Solution of PartialDifferential Equations. Vector notationis introduced in the formulation of par tialdifferential equations and used for flawequations.A completely new section containsChapter VIII on the Laplace Transform,Chapter I X on Analysis of StagewiseProcesses by the Calculus of F initeDifferences, and Chapter X an theNumerical Solution of Part ial DifferentialEquations. The second edition appears to have amore uniform level of treatment of allsubjects than did the first edition. I t hasmuch excellent material and has fulfilled

its "purpose of this hook is to consolidatethe advanced methods of mathematicsinto a form that can be applied readily byboth the student and the professionalengineer." The man who desires to useadvanced mathematics must know and beable to use his basic mathematics. Hemay need to review some of it before hecan apply the advanced methods ofmathematics given here.KENNETH A. KOBE

    ADVANCES IN CARBOHYDRATECHEMISTRY. VOLUME 11Edited by Melville L. Wolfrom and R.St ua rt Tipson. Academic Press Inc.,New York, 1956. viii + 464 pp. 12tables. 16 X 23.5 om. $11.

THE ates t volume of "Advances in Car-bohydrate Chemistry," published in 1956,maintains the same able and comprehen-sive treatment of subject mat ter and in-ternational scope of authorship th at dis-tinguished the preceding volumes of thisseries. The topics presented are: PeriodateOxidation of Cmhohydrates, which is dis-cussed by J. M. Bohbitt; The Osones, byS. Bayne and J. A. Fewster; Reactions afthe Monosaccharides, with beta-KetonicEsters and Related Substances, by F. Gar-cia Gonzilez; Kojic Acid, by AndrewBedik; The Biosyntheeis of the Mono-
