are able to repair damage, regenerate new tissuesand regain vital functions. A better understandin€l ofthese pfocesses of self repair and self heaiing wouldgreatly promote medicine as a healing aft. So farthese processes have proved too difficult to beexplained scientif icalJy. They are apparcntly highlycomplex, integfated, physiological processes that arevery hard to unravel anal),t ical ly. How may the theoryof ECIWO help us towards a bettef undefstand;ng?There is cl inical evidence that bio-holographic

therapy using the di i lerent EClWOs, or acupuncturernicrosystems, gives an integrated physioloBicalresponse that prornotes self-healin8. ExperimentaJstudies confirm this, aJlowing a mofe analyt icalapproach to the physiological parameters invoived.

An i l lustrative study of this kind was done by CuoQifgtanS ei a/. at the Third Mil i tary Hospital inChina. They treated 3BB patients with gall stonesdiagnosed by ultrasound or;.v. Cholangiography, byauricular pressure therapy, l .e. bio-holographictherapy of the ear-EClWO. The cl inical results werevery good. In neafly 9B% of the cases Sall stoneswere expelled. All patients felt an improvementduring treatment and none had colic. In 182 ofthese patients the size and diarneter of the gallbladder and bi le ducts were measured by uJtrasoundduring therapy. l t was found that pressure therapy ofthe eaf points was f irst foJlowed by a signif icantcontraction of the gall bladder, then I0 20 minutesaiierwards by a di lal ion of the bi le duct (andpresumably by relaxation of the sphincter of Oddi),thus causing the gall stones to be expelled naluraily f9).

lr] lhis case the physioloEiical responses are o{ amechanical natufe, which makes an analyl icaldescript ion easier We see that they are coordinated intime and space to expel the gall stones, that is to servea physiological purpose o{ self-repair When we Icrckat the choice of ear points used and the integratedphysiological response achieved, $,e realise that thiscan not easily be explained by mere mechanrcalref ex activity via known neural rnechanisms.Another interesting stLrdy on ear acupunctufe, irorn

the Insti tute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at theHarbin Medical Universit, invoived a chemrcaparameter. In this study recurrent aphthous ulcefs oithe oral cavity were treated by bloodlett ing frorn themost electroactive point of the ear, which invariablywas found in the mouth zone of ear acupuncture. lnthe treatment group, 23 patients were treated in thisway, whiJe 11 patients in a control group weretreated randomJy. The posit ive therapeutic resultswere statist icalJy signif icant, and the recuTrence rateof the treatrnent group was onJy 12.57., versus72.7'/. iot the control group. For al l patients thecontent oi zinc in the hair was measured before andaiter ireatment. The patients in the controJ groupwefe given 20mg of zinc gluconate oral l , taken 3times a day for 14 days, while those in the treatmentgroup received none. The mineral zinc is known toprotect mLrcosal cel ls fror. damage. Surprisingly, i twas found that the arnount of zinc in the hair ofpatients in the trealment group was signif icanily

raised towards normal, and ihat bloodlett inB of theear point was found to give a better response thanoral supplen ents of zinc (70).These stLrdies show the complexity of healing

responses to bio-holographic therapy, involvingdifferent physiologicai parameters. Frornacupuncture research much more is known aboutsuch physiological responses; involving the immunesystem, the endocrine system, neryous regeneralion, neurotransmitter substances, the fespiratory andcardiac systems, afterial circulation, stomach andbowel movements, blood corpuscles, blood l ipids, efc. Most of this research, however, has oeen ooneon body acupuncture, and we do not know to whatextenl the acupLrncture points used conform 1(] ihebio holographic rule. We can therefore not str jct lyknow whether these results also apply to ECIWOtherapy. We have, however, some very good reasonsto believe that they do in Senefal appJy; and someof the experimental studies presented to the international congress of ECIWO biology in Singapore in1990 contirm this.

Experimental studiesln a study presented by Yue Baosheng theimmLrnoglobins l8C, lgA and lgM as well ascomplement C3 were measured in 43 in patientsreceiving bio-holographic acupuncture of thesecond metacarpal system (SMSJ. A signil icantincrease in al l of these immunological parameteTswas observed, indicating that the therapy inducedan increased responsiveness of the immune systeafl/ /). Wang Wenfeng observed radiological ly aneffect on stomach peristalsis in 52 patients bypressin:j the ECIWC) stomach acupoint f72J.Yunzhou Li ei a/. recorded a substantialimprovement of respiratory function measured bypeak expiratory fJow rate in 42 cases ot acuteasthma treated by ECIWO acupuncture of the SMSf73). And in their analys's of I20 cases of headachetreated by SMS rnassage, ZhanB Ruojen ef a/.measured a si€inif icanl increase both ln arteflalelasticity and in the microcircLrJation ol6lood (14).

Mo fe r . r . J1h o the r " ou r n \ r . i . l o t ' " l ' n " , t .of ECIWO bio holographic therapy is certainJyneeded, but lbei ieve we already have suff icientevidence to concllde that the general effect of suchtherapy is to reinforce or induce coordinaled physio-logical responses, serving organic processes ofself repair and self-healing. Such processes arediff icult to explain analyt ical ly, and it is throuSh thelack of satisfaclory scientif ic models to explainther., that modern .nedicine has tended to deny thaithey r.ay be an object of serious scientif ic research. This att i tLrde has also been a main reason why theresLrlts of.nodefn acupuncture research have notbecome more widely known and accept€d.Perhaps ECIWO biology may change aII that.

ECIWO biology has a sol id scientif ic loundalion inbiological and embryological research, and it gives usa radical new explanation of why the primary effed ofbio+olo8faphic therapy is that of regeneration- Jt

A major cause of human misery and loss of socialresoLrrces in the world today is druB addict ion. Inthis f ield also, ECIWO biology has an importantcontf ibution to offer world medicine Through 20years of cl inical research the American psychiatr istMichael Smith of Lincoln Hospital, New Yofk, hasdeveloped a programme for treatinB druS addictsbased on ear acupuncture (20). The results achievedbv this method have been considered "Light-years

the body by a feedback mechanisrn. A similarfunction wil l apply also to other bio-holoSraphicsystems of the body. Thus the zone systemsapparently have an important biological function, restorinB homoeostasis and stimulating regenerativepfocesses where these are needed. The increased electrical conductivity of affected

points may serve a similar purpose. Looking from abioelectr ical point of vieW the body may be suckingup unwanted electrons from the surroundings, ordischarSing superf luous electrons through thesepoints. The increased electroactivity of affectedpoinis may thus promote homoeostasis and regener-ation. A prerequisite for such a hypothesis would bethat we have a bioelectrical system in the body thatregulates homoeostasis and reSeneration and thatthis system could account for the electroactivity ofbio-holographic zones.Such a bioelectrical system has in fact been

discovered by the American orthopaedic surSeon,Robert Becker. Measuring electr ical skin potentialsduring the regeneration of amputated forelegs insalamanders, Becker discovered in 1958 a negativeelectr ical cufreni concurrent with the regenerativephase. Through his further research Beckerdiscovered that this "rcgenefttive" current, is adirect electr ical current of semiconductive type thatis mediated by the nervous system. lt is, however, not mediated by the nerves and nervous cellspropet but by the Schwann cells of the perineuralsheaths in the peripheral neNous system and theglial and ependymal cel ls of the central neryoussystem 122). I t is thus a perineural system, and itapparently serves as an analogue electr icalinformation system, regulating regenefative andhealing processes in the body. This t ies in with theresearch of Professor Nordenstr6m of UppsalaUniversity in Sweden on biological ly closed electr iccircuits (23). Such functions may not be restricted tothe physical modalit ies of pressure and electr icity.Other physical st imuli may play a similar role, exerting an effect on the organism through the bioholographic zone systems.

From a biological point of view these functions oflhe bio holoSrdphi. orSanr'rt ion of rhp orSanirnmlrst be of Sreat signif icance. They help to explainthe resi l ience of l iving organisms, and how l ivingsystems, in spite of far greater complexity, mayoutJast mechanical ones. This inbuil t resi l ienceexplains how we actually preserve and strengthenour health through activity and interaction with oursunoundings. ECIWO theory supports a dynamicview of human health.
