Rethymno - Crete - economic facts

Crete is Greece’s largest island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean basin.

It’s population is 623.000 inhabitants.

It is the 13th Region of Greece and is divided into four sub-regional areas where the four main cities are located - Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos.

Crete Main economic activities include agriculture and tourism services As in many other Regions of Greece, production of wine and olive oil is significant. Dairy products are also important to the local economy and there are a number of specialty cheeses such. Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. Tourist attractions include: • the archaeological sites of the Minoan

civilization, • the Venetian old city and port of Chania, • the Venetian castle at Rethymno, • the gorge of Samaria, • the islands of Chrysi, Elafonisi,

Gramvousa, and Spinalonga.

European Programmes (running)

TRAINING OF THE TRAINER Psychodrama as a tool in education (two years 1st Oct 2013 – 30 Sept 2015) Leonardo da Vinci (LdV), Action Multilateral Projects Transfer of Innovation. Develop a training curriculum in experiential learning and psychodrama, with qualification standards specialized for educators in CVET.

GSSkills project - Geothermal and Solar skills (18 months, 1st Dec 2013 – 30 jun 2015) A program under Progress intiative. Identify good practices in training of low skilled workers, as well as identify the gap between skills needed and offered in Solar and geothermal energy sector.

EXYONET (one year, 1st Dec 2013 – 30 Nov 2014) A “youth in Action program” for the employment of young people at risk of social exlusion.

Bike Cultural Tourism Erasmus+ (LdV). Networking, good practices and training in Bike events organising.

PATiEvet KA1 action training event program, for experiential learning and psychodrama, specialized for educators in CVET.

Collect.Recycle.Manufacture (two years, 1st Nov 2014 – 31 Oct 2016) An Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership, focusing on the problem of excessive use of wood for papermaking and trees’ replantation.

JOB IMPULSE (two years, 1st Nov 2014 – 31 Oct 2016) An Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership, focusing on young people that have benefited from an international experience (mobility) and have not found a job after several months after their return
