Receiving acceptance letters from 64 different colleges, our 43 Seniors have accepted offers to 28 separate schools in 15 states. Of note, we have two students joining the military. Michael Smith will attend the United States Air Force Academy and Patrick Bunce will attend the United States Naval Academy. Our students are matriculating to a host of wonderful colleges and universities, large and small. Geographically, they range from Arkansas east to New York, west to California, south to Texas and north to Wisconsin.

Commencement Speaker

James Bradley, author of Flags ofOur Fathers, provided words of inspiration to our graduating seniors. He spoke of his father’s place in the iconic picture of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima and of his own quest to learn about the other men and to get his story published. He encouraged our graduates to persevere, to do the impossible, and to never give up on their dreams.

Class of 2011 College Acceptances

Valedictorian and salutatorianAustin Daily was announced as Valedictorian of the Class of 2011 with a 4.53 GPA and Konstantin Gruenwald was announced as class Salutatorian with a 4.44 GPA.

Concert Choir Takes Top Honors at State Choral Competition

The Episcopal Collegiate School Concert Choir won the state 3A choral competition. After receiving superior marks at Regional Choral Performance Assessment, the group went on to State. They sang very sensitively, interpreting a haunting Macedonian Folk Song in the Macedonian language, an English Madrigal, and a contemporary Spanish piece with complex rhythms and body percussion. The Concert Choir earned the highest marks and the following two titles for Division 3A: Best Mixed Ensemble and Best Overall Ensemble, for which they received the Sweepstakes Trophy.

Starmites In april, the Theatre Department put on one of the best shows in Episcopal history! Dreaming her way into a comic book adventure in Innerspace, Eleanor saved the galaxy in Starmites. Eleanor, Spacepunk, the Starmites and the Lizard Man battled the evil Banshees (weird women with dangerous hair-dos) led by Diva and Shak Graa. It was a fantastic performance!

6th grade Trip to Ozark Natural Science CenterThe 6th grade students experienced three days and two nights in the wild at the Ozark Natural Science Center near Huntsville, Arkansas. The hands-on outdoor science activities included field investigations, identification of plants and animals, including differentiating edible/venemous varieties, and stream water quality analysis. Visual Arts

Art students in all three divisions participated in record numbers in multiple school-sponsored art competitions, receiving many awards. Events in which our young artists were recognized included the Young Arkansas Artists Show, AYAA, the Congressional Art Competition, the Pulaski County Animal Shelter Contest, the Endangered Species Contest, Eggshibition, and Relay for Life. Students also participated in non-school-sponsored contests such as Doodle for Google and the Celebrating Art contest. With encouragement from their teachers, our art students have taken their talents outside of the studio walls and beyond our gates in order to raise funds or awareness for causes which benefit the greater community.

Hat’s Off To Our Broadcast Journalism Studentsat the 2011 arkansas scholastic Press association Convention, the Advanced Broadcast Journalism students were awarded a Superior Rating for “ECTV News” for the eighth year in a row! The students are Maggie Beetstra, Grace Erwin, Mareece Griffin, Michael Hairston, Ian Mayfield, Ellie McDonough, Madison Moody, Connor O’Brien, Elizabeth Pack, Anne Thomas Rystrom, Robert Staten, Steele Strauss and Claire Worley. Individual winners included Superior Show Opening and the Best of Arkansas to Ellie McDonough; Superior News Story to Maggie Beetstra and Elizabeth Pack; Superior Humorous Feature to Mareece Griffin, Michael Hairston and Robert Staten; and Excellent Human Interest Feature to Ellie McDonough, Steele Strauss and Claire Worley. Congratulations!

Saturn and her rings through a telescope. A challenging off-the-trail hike included numerous stream crossings and culminated in a playful romp beneath a waterfall. Nightly campfire activities included singing, games and skits. A fun and educational time was had by all, including Episcopal faculty chaperones Suzanne Wilmoth, Shelly Sutton, Christy Stine, Dave Webb and Kip Kruger.

Academic Success

Quiz BowlEpiscopal Collegiate’s Upper School Quiz Bowl team won the 3A State Championship on Saturday, April 30 at the AETN studios in Conway. This was Episcopal's fifth state championship and sixth consecutive appearance in the state final. Episcopal defeated Arkansas Baptist by a score of 415-130 in a commanding performance led by Captain Austin Daily, who was also named MVP of the state tournament. In addition to Austin, we congratulate the other players in the final game: Konstantin Gruenwald, Douglas Kessel, Sonia Helen Pascale, Grant Slatton, Matthew Stewart, Ben Winter, and Anna Zolten.

Arkansas Governor’s School Every year one or more of our rising seniors is accepted into the Arkansas Governor’s School for a summer of academics and enrichment in a college setting at Hendrix College. Accepted into this year’s class were Chelsea Copas, Laura Hildebrand, Kelly Singer, and Matthew Stewart.

Cum Laude Society The top 10% of the senior class, based on academic performance, were inducted into the Episcopal Collegiate chapter of the Cum Laude Society during a special ceremony on April 29th. Beginning in 1906, Cum Laude recognizes and celebrates a student’s cumulative academic achievement. It is modeled upon Phi Beta Kappa’s principles and is comprised of 370 chapters worldwide. Our chapter received its Cum Laude charter during the first year of eligibility. The faculty members of the Episcopal Collegiate Chapter of Cum Laude Society initiated the third student class, comprised of Austin Daily, Ashley Ederle, Konstantin Gruenwald, Hayden Knabe, and Michael Smith.

Senior SpotlightAustin Daily, Class of 2011 Valedictorian and recipient of Episcopal’s Stephens Outstanding Senior Award, is a scholar’s scholar. He served as captain of the State Championship Quiz Bowl team (and received the MVP award for the tournament); he has been named a National Merit Finalist; he accumulated the school’s highest ever cumulative GPA of 4.53; he achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT; he was recognized as one of 20 top Seniors in Arkansas by the Arkansas Times; he was recently inducted into the Episcopal Collegiate Chapter of the Cum Laude Society; and he was awarded a 2011 Stephens Award by the City Education Trust. Austin plans to study Engineering at Georgia Tech.

Inaugural Montgomery Family Scholarships AwardedSuSan and Bill MontgoMery of Dallas, Texas established a four-year academic scholarship for Episcopal Collegiate students who have committed to attend the University of Arkansas. The Montgomery Family Scholarships will be awarded each year to students who have accumulated strong records of academic achievement, leadership and citizenship outside the classroom. Warren Stephens said, “Harriet and I are privileged to have friends like Susan and Bill who share our vision regarding the education of our young people and who are committed to investing in their future.” The first recipients are Katie Cousins, Class of 2010, and Nicole Soulsby, Class of 2011.

Maggie Beetstra and Anne Gonzalez will interact with a variety of hospital personnel over the course of the six-week internship at Arkansas Children’s Hospital

and will experience firsthand the fundamental role of science in pediatrics.

City Education Trust Stephens Awards

The City Education Trust of Little Rock each year recognizes outstanding achievements by selected teachers and students in the Central Arkansas area with the presentation of the annual Stephens Award. One of four 2011 Stephens Awards for excellence in classroom teaching was presented to Mrs. Lisa Conyer, and one of eight 2011 Stephens Awards for student achievement was presented to Austin Daily at a reception on Monday, April 18th. Congratulations to Mrs. Conyer and to Austin for being 2011 recipients of this prestigious award!

head BaSeBall coach traviS hill was named the Conference 3A-5 Coach of the Year after leading the Wildcats to a 12-8 season with three players named to the All-Conference Baseball Team: senior Ian Mayfield, junior Robert Staten, and sophomore Nick Henry.

our varSity girlS’ Soccer teaM made it to the State Semi-finals, capping a winning season. Senior Hayden Knabe, in addition to scoring a state record-setting goal within the first six seconds of the game against Conway St Joseph, was named All-Conference, All-State and AAA All-Star. Junior Erin Campbell was named All-Conference and All-State, senior Alex Sullivan was named All-Conference and AAA All-Star, and senior Emily Miros was named All-Conference, All-State and AAA All-Star.

our BoyS’ varSity Soccer teaM produced three All-Conference players: senior Charlie Vollers, sophomore Jacob Rowell and senior Grant Slatton. Charlie was also named to the All-State team.

the varSity girlS’ track teaM saw senior Jessica Giordano win the Conference Championship in the 3200 meters and finish as Conference runner-up in the 1600 meters; she went on to capture 3rd place in the State Championship 1600 meter race and State Runner-up in the 3200 meter race. Sophomore Catherine Babin was Conference Champion in the 300 meter Intermediate Hurdles and Conference Runner-up in the 100 meter Low Hurdles.

Wild Game Dinner a new event was introduced to Episcopal Collegiate in February, 2011 – the Wild Game Dinner! Many of our dads and local restaurants prepared “game” for the event, including duck gumbo, venison chili and much more! The proceeds from the event went towards Fine Arts and Athletics. It was a great evening and the event will be held every two years. Major sponsors included Iberia Bank, Russell Chevrolet, and Traci and Albert Braunfisch.

Night at The Arkansas Repertory Theatre Episcopal Collegiate Parents’ auxiliary hosted a night featuring Hairspray! at The Arkansas Repertory Theatre. The 200 guests enjoyed appetizers from many different vendors and a signature cocktail, “The Dancing Diva”, sponsored by Brandon’s Rock Town Distillery. The proceeds will benefit faculty development.

8th grade Trip to Memphis sights enjoyed by the students included the Gibson Guitar Factory and Museum, the Rock and Soul Museum, the Pink Palace, and the Memphis Zoo. Entertainment included dinner on Beale Street at the Hard Rock Café, a night at the movies, an I-Max feature, play time in a park, and a minor-league baseball game where the Memphis Redbirds won in extra innings!

Alumni Parents’ Partyon March 17, 2011, over 45 parents of Alumni gathered at a St. Patrick’s Day party at the home of Julia and Marty Sunde, parents of David Sunde ’09.

Dickey-Stephens Park Episcopal Collegiate celebrated the success of the 2010-2011 Annual Fund Drive at the opening Traveler’s game at Dickey-Stephens Park on April 14. Over 350 attended and fun was had by all.

1998 Society Members of the 1998 society enjoyed food and fellowship at a spring party hosted by chairs Terri and Kyle Patton, Susan and Mark Reynolds and Denise and Scott Tabor. The event was held at the home of Lara and Ethan Schock. Guests enjoyed live music, food prepared and donated by Stephen Raborn and the grill masters of First Security Bank. An on-site painting of the Schock’s home was created by Laura Raborn.

Grandparents’ and special friends’ Day Grandparents and special friends joined

us in Chapel on February 25, 2011. Performances by the Concert Choir,

Middle School Chorus, percussion groups, and orchestra. Lower School students entertained their guests, followed by

tours of the school.

MS WalkThis spring’s Walk for Multiple Sclerosis marked our 6th year of participation in sponsoring a school team. Started by Katherine Davis (’09) in honor of her mother Robin, we have continued the four-year tradition of leading the walk, raising $800 with a team of 45 walkers.

After School Fun!

Field Dayon the last day of school, students in the Lower School had fun in the sun at their second annual Field Day celebration. Three-legged races, low hurdles, sack races, water-balloon lacrosse, a giant slip-n-slide and the dreaded tug-of-war were challenges to be met head-on with smiles, laughter, and some icy cold treats on a picture-perfect morning!
