nekā viens metrs. Tās svars ir no 25 līdz 27 tonnas, ja tā ir piepildīta ar izlietoto degvielu. Ārējais korpuss sastāv no piecus, 5 centimetrus bieza vara, kam bútu

jáaizsargā pret koroziju. Iekspuse ir no kaļamā dzelzs (tipa čuguna), kam jánodrošina augstu izturību.

Atomindustrijai piederosais kodolatkritumu glabátuves izveides uzņēmums SKB (skb.se), Zviedrijá, eksportē savu kbs-3 metodi , kā atbrīvoties no augsta līmeņa kodolatkritumiem uz citām valstīm. Riski, kas saistīti ar tá ilgtermiņa drošību, ir daudzveidígi.

1. Vara kapsulas korodé

KTH (Karaliskais Tehnologijas Institúts Stokhokmá) pētnieks Peter Szakalos, liecina, ka vara kapsulas, kurás atkritumus ievieto lai novērstu radioaktīvo noplūdi korodé un var sadalíties jau pirmajá simtgadé. Šī problēma ir īpaši jūtama kalnu iezí ar bez-skābekļa ūdens caurplúdi.

Visās valstīs, ir grūti rast vietu kodolatkritumu glabásanai. Bet iespēja ir lielāka kodolelektrostaciju tuvumá. Kbs-3 metode starptautiskajás eksporta reklámás tiek sludináta ká samērā neatkarīga no iežu īpašībám, un līdz ar to visur izmantojama. Tas ir piesaistījis Somiju, kas jau plāno izmantot metodi un UK ir ieinteresēti. Taču abos gadījumos, glabātuve būtu slapjá kalna iezí.

Ūdenim plūstot caur kalna ieza plaisām mālu montmorillonita daļiņám reagéjot ar údeni veidojas kolloídi kuru lielás virsmas varētu pieasaistít sev radionuklídus un ar plūsmu iznest tos gruntsūdeņos.

Problēma palielinās, ja ūdenim ir ļoti zems sāļuma límenis.

Eiropas Atomskaldīšanas centrs (European Spallation Source) ir Eiropassadarbības projekts, tāpat kā daudzi citi liela mēroga pētniecības projekti, tostarp CERN Ženēvā. Pasaules valstis, kas ir ieinteresētas ESS būvniecībáun ekspluatācijá veido koalīcijas un panākushas līgumus ar Zviedriju. ESS tādējādi nav ES projekts.

ESS būs daudznozaru centrs avansetai pētniecībai un rūpnieciskai attīstībai. Vairāk nekā 300 zinātnieku no 11 pasaules valstīm piedalījās plānošanaa, kasilgusi apmēram 15 gadus.

ESS pavērs zinaatniekiem pilnīgi jaunas iespējas virkné pētniecības jomu: ķīmija, nano- un enerģijas tehnoloģijas, vides tehnoloģijas, pārtikas, dabaszinātnes, pharmakologijaa, IT, zinātnee, tekniskajos materiālos un arheoloģija.

ESS: liels mikroskops, kurá neitroni tiek izmantoti lai sikákapskatit dažādus materiālus. Augstás precizitátesinstrument ļaus smalki analīzi vielas reālitátei tuvosapstākļos.

ESS will be the worlds largest and most modern neutron scattering facility. 7 of the 26 neutron scattering facilities around the world have designs comparable with the ESS and most of them are equiped with sub-critical reactors allowing transmutation studies

The ESS Scandinavia third Round-table was held in Riga, Latvia, at the 22-23 September, with the aim of discussing how to take the ESS project forward, beyond December 2008.

- With the support from all of the Baltic states, as well as from Poland, Sweden and Denmark, we are already forming a powerful alliance. We are especially happy over the great interest from the Baltic states in the scientific and technical cooperation around the ESS, says Colin Carlile, Director of ESS Scandinavia.

ESS-S claims that no fission of atomic nuclei takes place in the mercury even if this is a characteristic reaction. For instance radioactive Iodine is formed as one of the fission products. This is possible to read about in ESS’s own documentation. Spallation leads always to some extent of fission.

Even if this is not like in a nuclear reactor, other countries, unlike Sweden, would classify ESS as a nuclear facility. If no fission would take place, no new elements could be formed except isotopsfrom Mercury.

ESS-S claims that the mercury target is a closed system.

The part of the Mercury target where the proton beam enters into the Mercury is exposed to intensive heat flow and extremely intense radiation. Even more - strong vibrations occur when the bubbles from boiling mercury collapse. This vibration effect is a lot like the one when you get air bubbles in you water pipe at home. To avoid collapse of the thin metal container of the target Mercury it is necessary to inject helium bubbles into the mercury as a dampener.

A part of the target has to be exchanged after 45 days run of the ESS and will have to be stored in a nuclear waste repository.

a proton accelerator (like ESS) with very high power (5 MW for a demonstrator, up to ~50 MW for an industrial burner);

a burner reactor where spallation and transmutation would occur;

a processing plant in which short-lived isotopes that could not undergo further transmutation would be removed for secure disposal, and where other isotopes could be recycled into new fuel assemblies for the burner reactor.

So as the global industry this year 2010 starts to build in Lund the first of the three components necessary for a transmutation plant. Are they planning more facilities? Why would they tell us? No gain in that.

”The fact that the accelerator may be the first step towards a new prototype reactor (which was first imagined by Carlo Rubbia) on Swedish ground – this is something that nobody wants to talk about. But if you know something about nuclear physics, you should realize that the size and effect of ESS is meant for transmutation experiments on a large scale – not just as occasional experiments.

ESS could be the first phase in developing a full scale, scary Rubbia reactor – accompanied with the necessary reprocessing plants.

The municipality (Lund) which is expected to give territory to establish the European Spallation Source project, should get legal guaranties, that transmutation of nuclear waste is not part of what ESS is going to be used for!” But even then tomorrows legal guaranties can be changed in the future.

Espo konvencija ir ļoti būtisks solis, lai apvienot visas ieinteresētās personas un novērst kaitējumus videi pirms tie varétu notikt. Konvencija stājās spēkā 1997.
