Ecosystem Review and Assessment

Unit 4Lesson 48

Page 2: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Let’s review what we have learned about ecosystems.

Page 3: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

An Ecosystem is a group of plants and animals working together

from a particular location.

Page 4: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals have four basic needs. They need food, shelter, water and

air.

Page 5: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

All animals need food but different animals need different types of

food.

Page 6: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Plants need food. Plants get their food from the soil.

Page 7: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals need water. Plants need water to survive.

Page 8: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals need shelter.

Page 9: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

A shelter is protection from weather or dangers.

Page 10: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals need protection from sun, rain, cold and other animals.

Page 11: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Plants need their roots protected.

Soil shelters roots.

Page 12: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals need air. They need the oxygen in air.

Page 13: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Plants need air. Plants need the carbon dioxide in the air.

Page 14: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals and plants need space.

Page 15: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals can't be crowded. They need space to grow

strong.

Page 16: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Plants need space for their roots to grow.

Page 17: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

All plants need light to grow. They can not survive without

it.

Page 18: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Most animals need sunlight. Some animals can survive without

sunlight. There are fish who live in complete darkness deep at the

ocean floor.

Page 19: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Take a break. Stand up and tell a friend all the needs of animals and

plants you can think of.

Page 20: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Now listen as your friend tells you all the needs of plants and animals

they can think of.

Page 21: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Did you both get all the needs we discussed? Rewind the video and

check.

Page 22: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Let’s look at beach Ecosystems.

Page 23: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Some living things at the beach live under seaweed and inside

shells to protect themselves from the heat and salty air or danger.

Page 24: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Some living things burrow in the sand. The sand provides shade

and moisture.

Page 25: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The mussels eat plankton found in the water.

Page 26: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The starfish eat the mussels.

Page 27: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The seagulls eat the starfish.

Page 28: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

These living things need each other.

Page 29: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Crabs need algae or seaweed. Seagulls needs crabs.

Page 30: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Take a break. Stand up and tell a friend what you have learned

about beach ecosystems.

Page 31: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Let’s look at woodland ecosystems.

Page 32: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Living things in the woodland might be hiding in trees or

under the soil.

Page 33: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals in this ecosystem can survive cold winter months.

Page 34: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Woodland animals depend on trees for food and shelter.

Page 35: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Earthworms help the trees survive.

Page 36: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The trees provide shelter and food for animals and birds.

Page 37: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Bobcats and owls live on the animals they hunt.

Page 38: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Take a break. Stand up and tell a friend what you have learned about woodland ecosystems.

Page 39: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Let’s look at desert ecosystems.

Page 40: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The desert ecosystem is hot and dry. Living things in the

desert can survive in dry heat.

Page 41: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Deserts are very hot and dry all year.  Plants and animals that live there are

able to survive on very little water.

Page 42: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Desert plants are different

from plants in other

ecosystems because they have to live

and grow with very little

water.

Page 43: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Desert plants have shallow roots so that they can soak up any rain

that falls in the dry desert.

Page 44: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Desert plants save water in their stems and have sharp needles to keep animals from eating them.

Page 45: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Many of these plants produce flowers or fruit. This is food for many

animals.

Page 46: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Most desert animals are nocturnal, that means they hunt for food at

night when it is cooler.

Page 47: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Many desert animals fur, feathers, or skin is light in color because the light color reflects the hot desert sun. This helps keep the animal cooler.

Page 48: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The tortoise and the jack rabbit eat plants in the desert. They build their

burrows near plants for shelter and shade.

Page 49: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The coyote eats the jack rabbit and

the tortoise and many other

animals. It also eats berries and

flowers.

Page 50: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The antelope squirrel eats the plants in the desert. The rattlesnake eats

antelope squirrels and other rodents and reptiles.

Page 51: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

The Roadrunner eats rodents, like the

antelope squirrel, birds. It eats snakes, like the rattlesnake and other

reptiles. The roadrunner perches on

desert plants.

Page 52: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Take a break. Stand up and tell a friend what you have learned

about desert ecosystems.

Page 53: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

How do people hurt the ecosystems?

Page 54: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

People throw their trash in the ecosystems which can harm the

living things.

Page 55: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Sometimes people hurt the environment. People can cause

fires and oil spills.

Page 56: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Too many trees get cut down to make room for people.

Page 57: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Animals lose homes when too much land is cleared or

destroyed.

Page 58: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Humans hurt clean air and water with pollution. People can also

waste water.

Page 59: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

People create too much trash and we don’t know where to put it all.

Page 60: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

How do people help the ecosystems?

Page 61: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

People can clean up trash from ecosystems.

Page 62: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

People can help our environment by recycling. When we reuse things we

do not create as much trash.

Page 63: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

People can help the woodlands by planting trees to create homes

and food for the animals.

Page 64: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Planting trees and plants also help people. We need oxygen.

Plants give us oxygen.

Page 65: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

People can conserve water. That means not waste water.

Page 66: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Take a break. Stand up and tell a friend how people can harm and

help the environment .

Page 67: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

We have finished unit 4. We will take the assessment. I will read the questions. If you need more time stop the video at any time.

Page 68: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Pat your back. You just finished Unit 4 Ecosystems.

Great job!

Page 69: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

In our next unit we will learn more about plants and animals.

Page 70: Ecosystem Review and Assessment Unit 4 Lesson 48

Keep observing the world around you!
