Loughborough University

As an Economics student, you have the option to spend a year on a salaried professional placement between your second and final years of study.

This gives you the chance to ‘test drive’ a career and build valuable work experience in a real job with real challenges and responsibilities. Satisfactory completion of your placement year results in a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS) in addition to your degree.

How does it workYou have the option to do any of the following:• One 12-month placement• Two 6-month placements• Six months on placement and six months

studying abroad

Placements are typically salaried, however it is also possible to do a self-employed placement as part of our ‘Year in Enterprise’ scheme.

What might I do on placement? We expect students to be given a salaried professional role with all the challenges and responsibilities of a real job. Very often placement students are treated like graduate employees and become important members of the team.

Sometimes students are part of a project team working on a specific business problem, or they may be responsible for providing regular reports which are an integral part of a team’s operations. They may even be responsible for the duties of other people within a team. Always, we would expect our students to be appropriately challenged and developed. For some students this may involve undertaking elements of their company’s graduate training scheme.

The placement yearHow do I get a placement?Although it will be your responsibility to find your own placement, we offer exceptional help and support. Our dedicated Placements Office is in contact with more than 400 corporate organisations and will support and assist you in finding the right placement for you. Most placements are in the UK but it is possible to spend the placement year abroad.

We have a long history of placing students with big name companies like 3M, IBM, Lloyds Bank, Microsoft, PwC, Waitrose and Walt Disney, to name a few. The Placements Office not only supports you throughout the process through Facebook and Twitter vacancy alerts, and our annual intensive 2-day Employer Speed Presentation event on campus, but they will also help you prepare for interviews and for the placement itself.

Key benefits of a professional placement• Improved job prospects. According to recent research*,

over a third of the Top 100 graduate employers would not even consider offering a position on one of their graduate programmes to a graduate without work experience – regardless of their academic achievements and qualifications. Your placement year gives you a cutting edge in a very competitive job market.

• Test-drive a career. You will develop your understanding of business and be able focus more clearly on fine-tuning your final year module choices to suit your career aspirations.

• Professional responsibility. A year on placement gives you the opportunity to put theory into practice, develop leadership, communication and teamwork skills, and even take on managerial responsibilities.

• Personal development. Every year our finalists return more confident, mature in outlook and focussed on their career objectives.

• Potential job offer. Typically around 1/3rd of placement students are offered a job by their placement employer.

Many of our Economics students take the opportunity to expand their horizons and enhance their employability by studying at one of our partner universities around the world between their second and final years of study.

A global outlookIn our rapidly changing global environment, employers place a high value on strong intercultural skills in the workplace. We want all our students to gain the skills and competencies needed to flourish as global leaders and global citizens in the 21st century.

We work hard to ensure an ever-increasing international dimension to what you are taught on our courses, to provide you with a wider world view of your subject in a global context. All third-year undergraduate students have the opportunity to spend a semester or a full academic year abroad at one of our partner institutions in Europe, North and South America, East Asia and Australia.

How does it work?Instead of doing a one-year professional placement, you can choose to do any of the following:• one year study abroad (either at one partner university for twelve months or study at two

different partner universities for six months each);• six months study abroad and six months placement (in the UK or abroad).

What are the benefits of studying abroad?A period of study or work abroad is an exciting and challenging opportunity to:• stand out from the crowd by gaining intercultural skills highly prized by employers;• immerse yourself in a new culture;• improve your language skills;• gain confidence and broaden your horizons.

Successful completion of a year abroad or six months on placement and six months studying abroad results in a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS) in addition to your degree.

Summer schoolsFor students unable to spend a whole semester or year abroad, there is an increasing number of short, intensive summer schools available at a number of leading overseas institutions.

SupportOur dedicated International Relations Office supports you through all aspects of the journey, from finding out about available opportunities to securing a place at a partner university right through to planning your visit. Support includes, for example, regular information sessions, deadline reminders and drop-in sessions, all from day-one. Find out more at www.lboro.ac.uk/sbe/studyingabroad

Do I need foreign language skills? No, this is not essential as most of our partners teach in English. However, you can take language courses during your studies abroad if you wish, and you can also take extracurricular language classes at Loughborough before you go.

lectures to support and encourage me to explore independent trains of thought.

My placement working in tax consultancy in Zurich, Switzerland gave me the chance to dip my feet into something which I do not want to pursue

on graduating but which interested me.Your degree is what you make it; be interested,

BSc Economics

Economics relates to every aspect of our lives, from the decisions we make as individuals to the structures created by governments and companies. Economics will give you new perspectives on some of the most pressing and challenging problems and choices facing the world today.

As an economist you will develop the skills to understand how consumers and firms interact and behave, how government policy affects the economy and how financial systems operate. By providing an in-depth analysis of firms’ decision making in a variety of settings, economics can help business managers make better pricing, production and investment decisions. This flexible course allows you to specialise in the final year by choosing optional modules that are most suited to your career aspirations.

About the course In the first two years you will develop a thorough understanding of the latest developments in economic analysis and policy application. Your personal skills will be developed through a range of modules building your ability to present, analyse data and work in groups. Modern economics relies heavily on model-building and statistical skills, and these skills form a core part of the course in the second year.

It is in the final year that students enjoy the maximum choice and flexibility. The final year consists of modules in advanced macroeconomics, microeconomics and applied econometrics. Alongside these, you choose options from within general areas of study such as international trade, money and finance, industrial economics and a wide range of specialised areas of applied economics such as the economics of developing countries and environmental economics. Extended four-year degree You can choose to extend your degree and boost your employability by opting to study abroad or by taking a salaried professional placement between the second and final year of your degree. This can be done as a one-year study abroad option, a one-year placement, or six months of each.

Study abroad opportunities currently exist in Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Uruguay, and USA. This course enables you to gain a thorough grounding in the core of modern theoretical and applied economics as well specialising in areas such globalisation, migration, international development and urbanisation, all vitally important areas in today’s globalised economy.

Modern economies are shaped by globalisation. The integration of trade, financial markets, international investment, and flows of migrant workers all affect how interdependent countries are. Economic events in one country can quickly spread to other economies around the world. This degree will equip you to understand and analyse these influences at work on an international scale.

Questions like what determines why some regions are richer than others, and how countries can develop through trade are increasingly important questions for policy makers to consider. By looking at these issues froma the perspective of two different academic disciplines, you will gain a richer understanding of how these influences interact.

Now is a truly fascinating time to study the international dynamics of politics, international relations, and economics.

Governments have a key role in affecting how economies behave and perform, and policy is driven by both political and economic motives. These influences work on an international scale. This course equips you for a range of careers in government and both national and international policy making institutions.

It enables you to understand how today’s globalised economy is shaped by important factors such as international relations, the role of national and international institutions (such as the IMF, WTO and the EU), politics and the legal system, whilst gaining an understanding of the core aspects of economics. By looking at these issues from the perspective of two different academic disciplines, you will gain a richer understanding of how these influences interact.
