Many different people make their living by doing different types of jobs. These jobs are called economic activities

Primary Economic Activities

• 3FM – Farming, Forestry, Fishing, Mining.

• Primary activities are activities where people get natural resources.

Secondary Economic Activities

• People make or manufacture products or goods that we buy.

e.g. bakery, furniture making, making clothes, making computers.

Tertiary Economic Activities

• Any job that involves somebody providing a service.

E.g Teachers, bus driver, hair dresser

Natural Resources

• Provided by nature.

• Two types

1. Renewable

2. Non-renewable.

Renewable Resources

• Non finite resources

• Resources can be used over and over again with careful management.

• They include water, solar energy and fish.

Non – Renewable Resource

• Finite resource

• Once these resources are used they can not be used again. They include coal, oil and peat.

Sustainable Exploitation

• Present generation uses a resource for its needs without placing the needs of future generations at risk.

• E.g. cutting down trees but planting new trees to replace them.

How do we use water?

How do we abuse our water?

• Water is a renewable resource but sometimes people abuse this resource.

• Can you think of any way in which humans abuse our water.

How do we conserve water? • Businesses can be charged water rates. Some

can be metered which means the more water they use the more they pay.

• Some toilets, dishwashers and washing machines have been fitted with devices to use water more efficiently.

• Some industries recycle water

• TV and radio campaignshave urged consumers to conserve water.

Supplies of Water in Ireland

• Before the water is used it goes through many processes

In Ireland water is supplied by

• The local authorities e.g county councils or city cooperations

• Co-operative water schemes – groups of households coming together to provide their own water.

• Some houses have a well on their property

Dublin’s Water Supply• Three reservoirs – Leixlip, Vartry reservoir and Poulaphouca

reservoir.

Wicklow• Mountaneous region and recieves high• levels of rainfall.• Impermeable rock – does not allow water to pass through• it. • This is ideal for the collection of rainwater. • The river liffey also provides water. • Water treatment plant is in Ballymore Eustace, Co. houses and business.

Irrigation

Irrigation is the artificial watering of the land.

There are 3 main ways of irrigating the land

1. Sprinklers and canals

2. Flooding whole areas

3. Boring wells to use ground water.

Example of an Irrigation Scheme: Central Valley Project, California USA• Mediterranean Climate – hot dry summers with almost no

rain in June, July and August. Temps 30°C

• Winters are mild and wet (8°C)

• California suffers from drought – long period of time with no rain.

• Agricultural land is in the south end of California in the San Joachin Valley. There is a little supply of water.

• In the north there is the Sacramento River, where there is a large supply of water.

The Central Valley Project• 1935

• Plan was to move water from the wetter northern end of the Central Valley Project to the dry southern end.

• Dams and reservoirs were built across the Sacramento River.

• Canals were built to transfer this water southwards to the San Joachin Valley.

• Water is stored during the winter months and used in the summer.

Advantages • During hot, dry summers water is used to irrigate

land.

• Generates hydroelectric power which is used to pump water through the canals to the San Joachin Valley

• The cities and towns receive a regular supply of water.

• The reservoirs behind the dams are used for tourist and leisure activities.

Disadvantages• Dam construction and running dams is very

expensive

• High temps in California which results in high rates of evaporation. The water that is left has a high salt content which can poision crops.

• Some farmland was flooded to create the dams. Farmers and their families had to move away.
