operator, Future Group, is hav-

ing a clearance sale: its finan-

cial service business and flag-

ship clothing brand are gone,

and more deals are in the pipe-

line. Six months after the gov-

ernment backtracked on plans

to allow foreign retail giants

such as Wal-Mart Stores and

Carrefour to form joint ven-

tures, cash-starved domestic

chains are selling assets, shut-

ting stores, and scaling back

expansion plans. It seems im-

probable that retailers could be

in such trouble in India. They

have the world's second-

largest population, increasingly

affluent consumers, and limited

competition. But things are

Ecommerce platforms with flexibility built into their underlying structure can enable retailers to avoid the constant drain of re-platforming.

London-based retailer Harrods

is revamping its ecommerce

site to feature a more interac-

tive homepage with static

scrolling, editorial content and

curated items as well as a Fa-

vorites tool that lets users cre-

ate a shopping list. The retailer

is looking to engage consumers

with more content on its ecom-

merce site that helps them

make purchasing decisions. In

addition, registered users can

create and save a shopping list

of favorite items, which will ap-

pear first when brows-

ing.“Luxury retailers must be

able to convey the feeling of

luxury and the overall brand

while still having a successful

ecommerce business,” said Vic

Drabicky, a New York-based

luxury and premium brand digi-

tal strategist.“Many brands

struggle with this notion, swing-

ing way too far toward the brand

side of things and delivering a

poor user experience, or swing-

ing too far in the sales direction

said. “In this case, Harrods’
