Our offices are involved in* planning* design* research* development work* teaching and instruction

Our specialities are* healthy buildings* energy effiency in buildings* resource economizing in buildings* sustainable, green buildings* green planning* Eco Cycle Design - System Design

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 6

EcoCycleDesign

• EcoCycleDesign is a holistic way to design buildings and cities• Combines beautiful design with system design• We have improved the method for more than 40 years in different types of

projects• EcoCycleDesign can be used both for new buildings and retrofitting of an old

building• EcoCycleDesign includes cost efficiency, sustainability, energy saving,

recyclable material, high quality, good indoor environment and health

We have done it. And it works

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 7

The sun energy createsthe presumptions for EcoCycleDesign

The sun energy is the interest rate and all what you can use on our planet is the capital

Use the interest rate!

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 8

Why EcoCycleDesign?

• Our life-stile of endless consumption is causing chaos in mother nature• The earths resources will not last for long• Human beings have dramatically affected nature, especially during the last 200

years – the industrial epoch in the history of man• Our economy is still based upon cheap fossil fuel and constant growth of gross

national product• The global population is growing too fast

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 9

The global population during 10.000 years

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 10

The globalpopulationduring the last100 years

Population today total 6 billionin cities 3 billion.

Population 2050total 10 billionin cities 7,5 billion.

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 11

The global market for EcoCycleDesign is big

There is a need for new cities for about 4 billion people inthe next 40 – 50 years!!

There is a need for new homes for 300.000 per dayduring the next 40 – 50 years

The infrastructure can not be built in the old fashion way

New cities with new technology – Clean Tech

How can we mobilize the whole world in this challenge?

We all can play a vital role in creating asustainable and eco-cycle adapted world!

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 12

Leading principles for EcoCycleDesign

* Reduce* Reuse* Recycle* Renewables* Rethinking

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 13

How to use EcoCycleDesign?

When using EcoCycleDesign as a method we study the flows through a building ora city

• The flow of energy• The flow of water• The flow of air• The flow of material

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 14

Before starting the design phase write a program

A program for a city or a building is based upon:• An ideal social vision • An ideal ecological vision• An ideal technical vision• An ideal economic vision • Information about the site• Stick to the final program. No compromises!• As a part of the quality control EcoCycleDesign needs a professional project

manager from the idea to the maintenance phase• Education is crucial throughout the whole process• Every project must be evaluated to give important knowledge for future

projects• A program is the buisness idea for the project

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 15

Policy for Eco Cycle Adapted Buildings

• Our policy document is the framework for our way of designing.• We also have a method for the production of needed documents for the design

phase

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 16

The ultimate ecocycle adapted house:

• Will be built with organic, economical, technical and social vision• Will be run with a project management from the first idea to completion• Will be accomodated to local conditions and local climate• Should works towards protecting biodiversity• Combines beatiful design with system design• Have sealed flows and circulation• Have flows that can be measured• Get their added energy from renewable energy sources• Is a learning process during the whole life cycle

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 17

Some local environmental problems in Europe

• Lack of water• Sewage problems• Stormwater problems• Lack of cheap energy• The traffic situation• Polluted air• Fires• Need of locally produced food • Retrofitting of old buildings• Restore nature• Desertification• The need of a sustainable social vision for the cities• Sustainable affordable low cost housing

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 18

The modern city is an unbalanced system

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 19

In the new eco-cycle adapted cities – how can we handle the need of

* Fresh Water * Energy

* Food * Building Material

* Communication * Waste Handling

How can we educate the young generation to solve all these problems?

Clean Tech and Eco Cycle Design can be the tools forplanning and building

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 20

Are you a part of the problem or do you want to be a part of the solution?

Good examples are the way to the market

I will present some examples

Investment cost and yearly cost

GreenZone 17% more expensive than an ordinarybuildingsYearly cost 8% lower already the first year

Residential houses about 10% more expensive thanordinary buildingsYearly cost 10% lower

Energy need 25% of the accepted new standard inSweden

No need for district heating and traditional wastewater treatment

2009-06-01 Anders Nyquist Arkitektkontor AB 50

Architects and planners must combine Design and System Design

Economy is not only investment costs We must start to discuss * yearly costs* life cycle costs* costs for the society

We need more good examples

We have not inherited the planet from our parents

We have borrowed it from our children

If we only teach our children what we knowthen they can only do as bad as we do.
