    Questions

  • LEDs not new discovered in 1907 by British scientist Henry Round who worked for Marconi.

    1927 Russian Oleg Losev created first LED

    1929 Soviet Patent granted

    1962 First Commercial LED produced by Texas Instruments

    1962 The first Red LED produced by GE

    1968 - Beginning of mass production by Monsanto Company

    as indicators but not bright enough to illuminate an area.

    However, it was not until 1994 that Nichia produced

    the first Blue/White LED that the modern LED was born.

    Brief History of LED Lighting

  • Types of LEDs

    What type of light do we think of when LEDs

    are mentioned?

    Downlights?

    Maybe bulbs?

    Why?

    LEDs are typically directional making

    them great for spotlighting!

    Today any luminaire type is likely

    to have an LED alternative

  • Types of LEDs.cont

    Surface Mounted Diode SMD LED

    Chip on Board COB LED

    Multi Chip on Board MCOB LED

  • Types of LEDs Examples

    Downlights

    Bulbs

    Highbays

    LED Panels

    LED Tubes

    LED Shoplights

  • To Retrofit or Not that is the Question!!?

    Compatibility of fitting

    Age of Fitting

    Light distribution of Retrofit

    Cost of new fitting

    The Right Option? Considerations

  • Efficiency (measured in Watts)

    Lighting Efficacy (Lumens per Watts)

    CRI (Colour Rendering Index # between 0 100)

    Colour Temperature (Kelvin)

    Angle of Light beam (degrees)

    What to look for on the specification sheet

    Comparing LED products

  • LED Type & Driver

    Quality of Heat Sink (Material Used)

    Certifications

    Life Claims backed by LM80 & TM21 Projections

    Comparing LED products (Cont.)

  • Hume City Council Light$mart

    What is Light$mart

    How does it work?

    Who has benefitted?

    How do you get involved

  • Case Study 1 helloworld Sunbury

  • CS1 Before & After

    BEFORE

    AFTER

  • CS1 Was it Worth it?

    Light levels improved;

    Maintenance costs improved;

    Around a 3 year payback (excluding maintenance savings!)

    Average bill of $220 per month now $165

    Just ask Barry!!

  • Case Study 2 Spotlight Laverton

    200W Induction

    Lighting Used;

    10m High Ceilings

    50% energy saving

  • Case Study 3 Deakin University

    400W High Bays replaced with

    100W LED lamps

    75% saving in energy

    Only 6m high ceilings

    Job completed Dec 2011! Use of LEDs is not new.

  • Case Study 4 Hydro Tasmania

    Office Installation;

    Over 900 x 42W LED Panels Used across

    12 floors;

    ~50% reduction in energy

    Positive effect on staff
