RESULTS
In the early morning on October 19th, Eco Building Products gathered construction professionals, firemen, and media personnel at Oceanside’s Fire Training Center to witness a controlled burn of two structures, one with raw lumber and one with Eco Red ShieldTM protection, to demonstrate the fire inhibition

capabilities of Eco’s flagship product. The results were phenomenal. Each fire began with small
kindling next to a window drape to simulate an outlet fire. Within 90 seconds, the plywood walls of both structures had caught fire and in less than three minutes from initial ignition, the drapes were completely engulfed. However, the structure with Eco Red ShieldTM quickly stalled the flames, eventually extinguishing them completely and showing only minimal charring to some of the wall panels. In contrast, the raw lumber structure was completely in flames within five minutes, experiencing roof failure just three minutes later and total structural failure at eleven minutes into the burn.
Failure analysis of both structures revealed extremely interesting results. The raw structure burned as expected. The drapery ignited accelerating the flames up the wall and into the attic. Once the flames reached the attic the roof trusses and roof sheeting propagated the fire throughout the entire structure leading to total failure. In contrast the Eco Red Shield treated building indicated charring of the roof trusses and roof sheeting from the drapery flames; however no ignition was

present containing the fire to the corner of the structure which virtually self-extinguished.
Battalion Chief Terry Collis of the Oceanside Fire Department was on site during the demonstration, and acknowledged that one of firemen’s biggest fears is floor and roof failure while fighting fires. The more time they have to vent the roof and rescue fire victims, the more lives can be saved.
The iconic Eco Red ShieldTM lumber standing largely undamaged next to a smoldering pile of debris was a vivid demonstration of the products’ ‘Class A’ fire rating, which could prevent a full home fire or at least drastically improve the structural integrity of a home while severely reducing the smoke index, allowing occupants to escape and providing a safer environment for emergency responders.
Eco Building Products has been ramping up production of its proprietary Eco Red ShieldTM lumber line in anticipation of entering the consumer market, and has strong momentum with a recent QAI certification, ICC evaluation report, and GREENGUARD® certification, making it the first environmentally-friendly lumber product to be approved for all-home construction, providing protection from mold, wood rot, termite

THE SUZANNE SHOW TO FEATURE ECO BUILDING PRODUCTS
AN UPCOMING SPECIAL WILL EXPLORE THE
INCONVENIENT TRUTHS ABOUT TOXIC HOME-
BUILDING MATERIALS
Eco will soon be featured on The Suzanne Show, a popular health and wellness television show airing 7:00AM on Wednesday mornings on the Lifetime Network. The upcoming segment will explore the inconvenient truths behind many toxic building materials used in home construction, as well as healthier and more environmentally-friendly alternatives.
“The Suzanne Show is ‘me,’ unplugged – my interests and my passions and honest talk, from new ways to achieve optimal health, to my friends, great foods, and important questions that others aren’t

asking. I’m mixing glamour and innovative science in a way that America’s never seen before,” Suzanne says about her show.
Eco Building Products’ President and CEO Steve Conboy will join Suzanne on the show to help uncover often harmful and sometimes deadly elements in typical homes. Both Conboy and Somers have lost homes to fire, and both are under doctor supervision following allergic reactions to home mold infestations – two rampant problems in America that Eco products seek to eradicate.
“Lumber is stored outside on most jobsites,” says Conboy, “and when it’s brought into a warm home, mold is almost inevitable. In the dark, moist environments inside walls, these mold colonies can grow rapidly, birthing deadly micro-toxins that move through the home via ventilation, heating and cooling systems.” Over 25 million Americans suffer

from some sort of allergic reaction to these mold-related toxins every year, and for some it can be fatal.
Together, Conboy and Somers hope to shed some light on this and other disturbing trends in residential toxicity, and educate the public on how to avoid unhealthy environments within the home. The program will air on Lifetime on November 14th and 28th, and Lifetime Real Women on November 17th and 18th, as well as December 1st and 2nd.

post-service members. Founded by Eco Building Products, the program has since rallied companies across the nation to extend job opportunities and resources to many American veterans, such as Mitch Ritter of Carlsbad, California.
Ritter graduated from Carlsbad High School in ’75, and joined the Navy soon after to experience the world and give back to his country. He achieved both in his 26-year long career - his tours as a medical officer led him to every major body of water on the planet, more than twenty different countries, and every continent but two (Africa, which he saw from the coast, and Antarctica), all the while treating hundreds of other service men women as a physician, counselor, and friend.
Retiring from the Navy in 2001 brought a host of new challenges to this experienced Navy man, including helping raise two children, one of whom was born while away at sea. The stresses of military life had cost him a marriage and had left him exhausted from the field of medicine, leading Ritter to join

After the tourist drop off post 9/11, the camera industry saw a major decline, and Ritter was soon working for months without pay to help keep the shop afloat. Eventually it went under, and Ritter was again searching for work. Years of partial employment left Ritter without the funds to properly upkeep his home, which was suffering from termite damage, roof leakage, and other problems.
That’s when a neighbor connected Ritter to Eco President

treatments against wood-rot decay and termite protection. For decades all wood framing members have been subject to traditional pressure treating methodologies using Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate (DOT), with exposure limitations to weathering and structural strength. The Company’s Hawaiian approval elevates Eco Red Shield protection to be on par with traditional treatments for wood-rot decay and Formosan termite protection. Additionally Eco Red ShieldTM offers class “A” fire protection (a 1 hour rating for solid sawn lumber), an exposure
to the elements rating of AWPA UC3, GREENGUARD Children & SchoolsSM approval, and mold protection for the entire structure. Eco Red ShieldTM coatings being a topically approved process will not degrade structural strength allowing treatment of all engineered wood products and our polymer additives keep the coating solids from washing out of the substrate, which is a major concern due to the amount of rain in the region.
Eco is ready to distribute Eco Red ShieldTM into the Hawaiian market from its approved manufacturing facility located in Salem, Oregon. The majority of the lumber shipped into the Hawaiian Islands originates from the Pacific Northwestern coast of the United States. Application of Eco Red ShieldTM prior to shipment will provide protection from mold and weathering during the ocean freight process, providing the consumer with a fully protected product from the mills at lower costs.
“The recognition of Eco Red Shield coatings by Hawaiian Building Officials is another triumph in creating the paradigm shift in the industry,” says Eco President and CEO Steve Conboy. “Being recognized for use in Hawaii will open up several international markets for the use of Eco Red ShieldTM. home of the world’s nastiest Formosan termites, as is the continent of Africa and other sub-tropical regions. Eco Red ShieldTM protection is equivalent to the traditional methods with the added benefits of fire and mold protection providing the consumer with a better product at a lower cost. It is a matter of time before Eco Red Shield becomes the Hawaiian standard of choice. Our company continues striving to raise the bar in the industry. events. Leveraging the company’s FRCTM technology, Eco Fire BreakTM is the first eco-friendly fire inhibitor.
Engineered to dissolve in water, Eco Fire BreakTM creates a fire-inhibiting solution that can be applied directly to vegetation or even structures, without causing negative effects to the environment or your home.
Eco Fire BreakTM should be applied at least 24 hours before a fire event, but when applied the fire-inhibitor also acts as a natural fertilizer for plant life. Eco Fire BreakTM can provide a line of defense against approaching wildfires, giving homeowners the piece of mind to leave their properties and head for safety.
Eco Fire BreakTM technology is also being used in a Christmas Tree spray formula, which helps prevent home fires from the dry wood and needles of traditional Christmas Trees. Thousands of homes are affected by these fires every year, and Eco is looking to help prevent family tragedies this holiday season.

PLEDGE2VETS HEADS TO EAST COAST TO HELP SANDY VICTIMSTWO FAMILIES HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO RECEIVE HELP IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE SANDY
In an effort to reach out to veterans who have been impacted by the super-storm Hurricane Sandy, which wreaked havoc up and down the East Coast, Eco is sending people and suppliesto help rebuild.
After the unprecedented devastation, Eco President and CEO Steve Conboy knew his company had to be a part of the restoration effort, and more so than just supplying the region with protected lumber for future storms. Eco’s Pledge2Vets campaign had recently helped families in California rebuild roofs and renovate living spaces, and Conboy was set on having a

team on the ground in New York - one of the regions hardest hit by the wind and rain.
Two families have been selected - one in Freeport, and another in Massapequa. Eco’s vision is to hire veterans to hep with the cleanup effort and begin the rebuilding process for these and other families who lack the insurance to do it alone.
Eco will provide materials and labor to help clean up storm damage and restore properties for veterans and their families in need. “When the guys showed up on the ground to help these two families, one of the veteran’s wives began

crying, and said she couldn’t understand why we were willing to help out,” said Conboy.
Eco has also teamed up with NBC’s George to the Rescue to bring even more relief to hurricane Sandy victims. After working together on a Corporal Watson’s home renovation project in Los Angeles earlier this year, Conboy knew that the two organizations natural synergy could come together again in this time of need.
“We are so grateful to NBC for their support,” says Conboy. “Eco’s vision is big, and our goal is raise support from donations and partner with lumber producers to send some free carloads of Eco Red Shield lumber to areas that lost homes to fires, so that families don’t have to rebuild with raw lumber.”
Donations are being accepted at Pledge2Vets.com to help bolster and expand the relief effort to more families throughout the region. “Your money donated to this platform will go directly to those people that don’t have the resources to rebuild,” added Conboy. “Please donate what you can because the more support you can offer, the more families we can help.

Hurricane Sandy Leaves Water Damage, Mold Danger in Wake Thousands of homeowners along the East Coast face the painful task of rebuilding flooded homes
Hurricane Sandy, one of the most powerful storm systems to hit the United States in recent memory, has left a trail of destruction and tragedy in over twenty states totaling more than $20 billion in damages. More than 5 million people were left without power as water levels rose and flooded energy stations and high winds toppled power lines up and down the coast.
A major obstacle on the road to recovery will be the water damage to homes, offices, and other buildings, as mold prevention is vital to restoring structures to full use.

When flooding occurs, most external components including drywall and carpeting must be completely removed and discarded. Next, the moisture levels of the remaining structural lumber must be brought down below 12 percent before being reclosed, and any mold growth neutralized.
Any surfaces exposed to excess moisture should be cleaned thoroughly with hot water and detergent or, in severe cases, a safe amount of bleach and water. The EPA and CDC recommend high ventilation for the days during and following cleanup to help reduce indoor moisture levels.
If mold growth is not addressed quickly, storm damage may end up requiring a total renovation, structural as well as external

– otherwise severe health problems may arise as spores from mold growth often cause allergic reactions, respiratory problems, pain and aching, infections and other medical concerns.
Eco Building Products has mobilized to help educate homeowners who are being forced to rebuild after the devastating storm about the benefits of Eco Red ShieldTM, which prevents mold and other moisture related problems including wood rot and termites in the wood structure. As meteorologists predict more severe storms in the foreseeable future, homeowners who rebuild with Eco Red ShieldTM can potentially save themselves the burden of another costly full rebuild, should tragedy strike again in the decades to come.

Much of the dramatic devastation seen in the days following Hurricane Sandy’s landfall on the eastern seaboard was caused not by water, but by fire and wind.
Many homes and other buildings collapsed under the forces from high wind loads. While Hurricane Sandy brought some unprecedented weather to many states, most municipalities have stringent building codes mean to withstand even hurricane

like conditions. Why, then, did so many buildings fail? One reason is undoubtedly termite damage. Termite infestation is at record numbers throughout the United States, and even in homes where problems aren’t pronounced, even a small percentage of compromise in wood fibers equates to disturbing drops in the integrity and performance of structural lumber. Termite damage is the silent perpetrator behind many structural failures. Many homes on the East Coast have basements that were completely submerged when the storm surge hit and the rain fell, exacerbating mold problems.
Dozens of homes were lost to fires that began when electrical appliances, power lines, and other devices failed. These fires spread quickly between housing blocks, whipped by high winds and eventually leveling entire neighborhoods. In a storm characterized by excess rain, many homeowners don’t consider the potential for fire to be a real threat. Left unattended, however, many properties are prone to the kinds of accidents that led to so many homes being lost.
Eco Red ShieldTM is an effective solution to both of these costly elements to storm situations. With guaranteed termite

protection, Eco Red ShieldTM protects wood fiber from insect damage, meaning building code structural values stay optimal throughout a major weather event, helping homes survive high winds and torrential rain. Eco Red ShieldTM is also QAI certified and Class A fire rated, significantly reducing the spread of flames and drastically lowering the smoke index of fires. In real-world tests, Eco Red ShieldTM has also been shown to even extinguish fires as the flames interact with the coating’s proprietary fire protection. In chain reaction burns like those seen during Hurricane Sandy, stopping fires in their tracks could save many homes.
In addition to protecting from mold-related problems resulting from water damage, Eco Red ShieldTM is ideal for helping combat other life-threatening issues related to extreme weather events. For builders on the East Coast, and anywhere Mother Nature shows her aggressive side, Eco Red ShieldTM is the clear choice for safer homes and buildings.

FIRE PREVENTION TIPS A POTENTIALLY LIFE-SAVING GUIDE TO HOME FIRE SAFETY
In case you missed it, October was National Fire Awareness month, aimed at making sure residents prepare their homes for the upcoming heating and energy stresses of the winter months. To help spread awareness, the Red Cross released a helpful guide of facts and checklists to ensure the safest conditions possible. Here are a few.
• Every 15 seconds, firefighters respond to a fire somewhere in the United States.
• 65 percent of home fire deaths occur as a result of defective smoke alarms
• A fire can grow from a spark to a blaze in just 3 minutes
• Most fatal fires begin late at night or early in the morning when occupants are sleeping.• The number one cause of home fires is cooking.• The major causes of home fire deaths are smoking

materials, heating, arson, and children playing with matches and lighters. An important part of fire prevention is to install and regularly maintain working
smoke alarms on every level of your home, and ideally in every bedroom. Smoke alarms should be checked monthly to ensure operation, and the batteries should be change at least once a year, and the units themselves replaced every 10 years. Make sure to clear smoke alarms of dust and cobwebs regularly.
Having an escape plan is also a crucial part of fire safety, or any emergency. Be sure to know at least two escape routes from every room, and agree upon a safe meeting place well away from the residence with other occupants.
Fire risks rise dramatically as people age. For mature residents, it is imperative that the previous fire prevention techniques be followed carefully. Some additional fire prevention tips are below:
- Never leave kitchen heat sources unattended.- Keep a pot lid close by to smother pan fires.- Regularly clean stoves and toasters and remove crumbs.- Keep all items at least one foot from any heat sources.- Unplug electrical appliances and heat sources when not in use.- Keep keys, a robe, slippers and any corrective eyewear near your bed in case

INDOOR MOLD – A SILENT, GROWING PROBLEMMOLD REMEDIATION CLAIMS ARE RISING, YET MANY RESIDENTS ARE UNAWARE OF THE DANGERS FROM MOLD-RELATED MICRO TOXINS
Mold are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. There are hundreds of thousands of types of molds all around the world, most growing in warm, damp conditions. Mold spreads by producing spores, which float through the air and attach to surfaces friendly to growth.
In the construction industry, mold is problematic because often mold colonies are present in the lumber long before any pieces go up for structural support. This means that deep within finished wall cavities, framing lumber often has mold growth, thriving in the humid darkness between drywall. These spores can travel through the home via ventilation, as well as heating and cooling ducts.
Today, untreated lumber has higher moisture content than at any time in history, due to changes in foresting and logging techniques that harvest younger, fast-growth timber. Graded lumber is also often improperly stored outdoors or without regard to humidity, allowing for unchecked mold growth.

It remains unclear exactly how many fatalities or serious hospital cases can be directly traced back to home mold infestations, but concern for indoor toxicity levels are growing.
In 2004, the Institute of Medicine linked indoor exposure to mold with respiratory problems, as well as heightened asthma symptoms, in both adults and children. For those with particular mold allergies, the health effects can be more severe, ranging from fever to shortness of breath to mold infections within the lungs.
One way to help prevent indoor mold problems is to control humidity levels. Always keep home humidity below 50 percent, whether through dehumidifiers or air conditioning systems. Adequate ventilation is also important, as well as proper cleaning of bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas where water is present. Water damage to indoor areas should be cleaned immediately and thoroughly dried out, with carpets and upholstery that have been soaked removed.

Coverage: The calculated coverage rate for Eco Disaster Break™ on a flat, non-porous surface is: 126 sq. ft per gallon (applied @ 13 wet mils = 7 dry film thickness per coat.) Rate per gallon varies depending upon porosity, texture, condition of the surface and the mil thickness.
Uses:Rough, highly textured surfaces require more material than flat or smooth surfaces. Eco Disaster Break™ can be used over various interior or exterior surfaces including: walls, ceilings, trim, flat Transite, rough, porous, textured or irregular surfaces, cementitious surfaces, stucco, wood siding, shingle siding, window frames, windowsills & porch walls, wood overhangs, porch ceilings, wood trim & posts.
Drying Time:Under normal drying conditions, Eco Disaster Break™ will develop full strength and chemical resistance properties 7 to 10 days following application. The circulation of air helps water-based materials to dry more rapidly. Follow all applicable state and/or federal OSHA Guidelines.
Precautions:To prevent damage to the coatings when removing all plastic and masking tape, use a utility knife to first cut at coating edges. Where caulking is required to produce a smooth surface and/or to seal around windows, doors and seams, use compatible caulk (trowelable grade or in tubes). Patch damaged areas as needed. Allow to dry before applying the topcoat.
Application:Apply one or two coats of Eco Disaster Break™ over all the dry primed surfaces. Apply at a coverage rate of 126 square feet per gallon per coat (13 wet mils). PREFAB HOUSING – SMART, STYLISH, AND SUSTAINABLEModular homes are making a comeback as consumers look to cut costs and go for the green
The green movement has breathed new life into many overlooked and undervalued markets in the last decade. The prefabricated housing industry is one such example of dramatically shifting consumer demand, as the ‘less is more’ mantra becomes increasingly ubiquitous.
The industry has battled against stereotypes and image barriers for decades – many Western countries, especially the United States, view manufactured homes with a kind of cultural disdain, as their homogenized look and cost-cutting shortcuts in production made them a staple of low-brow, penny-counting suburbanites.

But all of that is changing quickly. An influx of stylish, eco-minded architects and designers into the field of prefabricated homes has brought a sense of renewal and chic to the sector, opening the door for a new breed of would-be homeowners and challenging the traditional model of urban and rural development. Costs are coming down, sustainability is on the rise, and the industry may finally be coming into its golden age.
The prefab genre includes modular, panelized, and manufactured homes, all of which first came onto the scene most notably after WWII, as millions of young soldiers returned from the theaters to move out into the suburbs and begin building a family life. Manufactured homes offered a cheap and time-saving alternative to tract housing. The trade-off in quality and design soon led to a decline in popularity, however, and the industry leveled off.
At least two factors have reinvigorated the prefab housing industry in recent years, however. The recession of 2008 and collapse of the housing market has emboldened potential

homeowners to step outside the moors of traditional tract housing, whether for cost-savings or to avoid a turbulent market. More prominently, though, the turn towards sustainability and environmental consciousness has done the most to highlight the strengths and potential of prefab.
Moving construction to an indoor factory does three things – first, it dramatically cuts costs. Standardizing and pooling construction efforts allows for the best deals in materials and labor. Second, it cuts down on material waste. In tract housing projects, up to 30 percent of stick built home material goes unused. The increased efficiency in a factory setting allows for

environmentally friendly materials to be used while remaining cost effective, as precision and quantities increase. Finally, as construction is unhampered by weather or other environmental concerns, building times are much lower and delays, weather or material related, are avoided altogether.
The prefab housing market is projected to move over 750,000 units by 2015, and many new companies are popping up to meet the demand. Paired with Eco Building products, this industry has the potential to sizably affect sustainability within residential construction as well as tackle problems with mold and VOC’s from working with raw lumber.

SIMPSON STRONG-TIE: SMARTER BUILDING COMPONENTSFrom humble beginnings, Simpson Strong Tie is today’s leader in structural fasteners
Since 1914, the Simpson family has been an integral part of the San Francisco Bay area building community. It wasn’t until 30 years after their founding, however, that the Simpson family stumbled onto what would become their mainstay in the construction market – structural components.
“The doorbell rang one Sunday night in 1956,” recalled Barclay Simpson, an early company manager. Outside, a neighbor was looking for help making structural connectors for a flat roof. “I said, ‘Of course’ and then tried to figure

out whether I could.” That request would spur the creation of Simpson Strong-Tie, which would grow to a $500 million-plus company and a global leader in structural components, employing more than 1,800 professionals with nearly 20 manufacturing locations worldwide.
Over the years, Simpson Strong-Tie has pioneered many innovations within the construction fasteners market, developing some of the strongest, most durable connections in the industry. With a world-class testing facility opened in 2003, the company is committed to improving the safety and quality of homes and other buildings. Simpson Strong-Tie components are often used in framing trusses, as their fastening components give the structural stability and durability demanded by both architects and consumers.
In addition to its growing, green building-oriented product lineup, Simpson is also a strong supporter of Habitat for Humanity. Since 2007, the company has donated more than $1.5 million in cash and products to projects around the world, including domestic housing builds.
